Ian raced for Team Sky and Katusha before retiring in 2020 following a 2019 crash in Italy which left him suffering from long-standing concussion symptoms. Although he was offered a team spot with Rally Cycling in 2020, Ian made the decision to turn his attention to gravel cycling. Entry-level gravel bikes Step 1 - frame material Aluminum, steel or carbon - but finding carbon at a lower price point might mean some corners were cut in the components to get the overall price down. Best bet is to focus on steel or aluminum. Step 2 - components prioritized Top-tier frame with low-end components will perform worse than a mid-tier frame with mid-tier components Groupsets can be tricky to upgrade so make this a priority Wheels may be expensive but they are easiest to upgrade Saddles, seatposts, stems and handlebars are much lower in cost and easier to upgrade. Step 3 - specific components Disc brakes - hydraulic vs mechanical Tubeless compatible at a minimum, set up tubeless is good 1x VS 2x - A 1x drivetrain uses a single chainring with a wide-range mountain-bike-style cassette to simplify the drivetrain and save weight. A 2x chainset offers two chainrings, and thus offers twice as many gears, however, the spread of gears is usually similar. Step 4 - 650b or 700c wheels and tires? The advantages and disadvantages of 700c vs 650b-sized wheels have been long debated and will continue to be discussed for a long time. Looking for on- and off-road versatility will be best served by the lower weight and better obstacle rollover of 700c wheels. Rougher terrain will find that the increased tire size and volume of 650b wheels offer a significant advantage in grip and comfort. Many gravel bikes will be able to accommodate both wheel sizes, giving riders who invest in a spare set of wheels the option of 'two bikes in one’ - a 700c wheelset set-up with fast-rolling tires for the road and a 650b wheelset with large, knobbly tires for more adventurous riding. Let’s look at some specific entry-level bikes First, let’s define entry-level. We don’t mean cheapest. We mean the first level of bike that will perform in a manner that you can feel confident riding an event or long day on the bike. Come and enjoy miles on miles of gravel around beautiful Wellsboro Pennsylvania and the PA Grand Canyon! We have a fresh new course for 2022, only a couple of roads overlap from our 2021 course! The route is a BEAST and at only 11% of the 140 miles being paved, there is plenty of gravel for everyone to enjoy! The Full MAMMOTH course is 140 miles and 15K ft. of elevation gain to challenge even the most advanced riders, come ready to duke it out with your will to finish in the pain cave. For those looking to compete there will be 6 STRAVA Segments totaling 68 mi. and roughly 6K ft. of elevation gain the fastest overall time through these segments in addition to finishing the full course decide the winner. Those of you that choose to attempt the Full MAMMOTH will ride two separate 70 miles, non-overlapping loops beginning and ending in Wellsboro with Aid Stations approximately halfway through each loop. (Please keep in mind that there will be a support vehicle patrolling the course but carry what you need for approx. 35 mile stretches) If you are doing the Half MAMMOTH option you will only do the first 70-mile morning loop. The Quarter MAMMOTH option takes you to Aid Station 1 (fresh coffee and baked goods for all at this station provided by Wandering Barista) then turns back toward Wellsboro totaling 32 miles and 3K ft. of elevation gain. What an amazing, fun-filled weekend in Lewisburg, PA for the unPAved of the Susquehanna River Valley! It rained (who cares), got muddy (added to the epic), and everyone had an absolutely amazing time. Starting with the pub crawl on Friday, the Packet Pickup (party) on Saturday, and culminating with the main event on Sunday it was an epic weekend. Easy on the eyes, hard on the legs!
