On June 6, 1822, an employee of the American Fur Company on Mackinac Island was accidentally shot in the stomach at close range, injuring his stomach and ribs. The unusual outcome of the accident would provide Dr. William Beaumont the platform needed to research one of the greatest contributions to medical science from the 19th century.
