Ep 347#346 - Exodus GOLIATH Album Review
EReleased March 20, 2026, GOLIATH, the newest behemoth to emerge from classic thrash masters EXODUS, feels a lot like 1989 but with some other added extras that are a bit different, experimental, and a little off the reservation relative to their earlier work. It also marks the return of Rob Dukes on vocals for the first time since 2010’s Exhibit B: The Human Condition. Loaded with scathing social commentary against the modern philistine monsters of our time, GOLIATH is sure to get the blood & adrenaline pumping and the fists & heads banging with revolutionary glee and righteous vengeance. Amidst all the thrashing, there are also a multitude of brutally heavy moments, shredding twin guitar harmonies, melodic riffs with power metal overtones, and even a string arrangement that, while a bit different than anything they’ve recorded previously, is still 100%, unapologetically EXODUS. Realize the “sad and/but true” fact that “people are getting dumber by the minute”, find out why you should NEVER go out on a boat drunk with a camera phone and talk to strangers, give some thought as to what might be “the most melodic Slayer song”, and prepare yourself for “The POONYs” when you JOIN US as we tackle GOLIATH, the latest metal monstrosity from EXODUS. Ep 346#345 LAMB OF GOD Into Oblivion Album Review
E“It’s like we’re missing someone…” Released Friday, March 13, 2026, INTO OBLIVION, the latest offering from Richmond, Virginia’s LAMB OF GOD, features a new logo and an album cover that hints at the darker atmosphere that dwells within. “It’d be wrong to do a clinky without Russ…” Chock full of enough sick grooves, primal screams, and disgustingly brutal riffs to give anyone who hears it a healthy case of “stank face”, INTO OBLIVION checks all of the prerequisite boxes necessary to maintain the interest of the most loyal fans while also offering enough sonic surprises to capture the curiosity of potentially new LAMB OF GOD fans. In short, it’s everything you’ve come to expect with a little extra texture thrown in for good measure. “This is so weird without Russ here…actually, it might be better without Russ here…” Get ready for a whole bunch of “hot takes”, because we’ve got Embering Effigy back in The Bunkerpoon with us, and we didn’t waste any time with the usual foreplay and got “right into the meat” with this episode. Find out which band “doesn’t belong in The Big Four” and remember JD’s sage words of wisdom “if you don’t want a gut” when you JOIN US (and special guests Embering Effigy) as we sprint INTO OBLIVION with LAMB OF GOD. Ep 345#344 - EMBERING EFFIGY - OUT OF THE WOODS Album Review
E“Let’s keep the dumb fuhqery to a minimum today…” EMBERING EFFIGY, the “Southern Fried Thrash Metal” threesome hailing from the outskirts of Atlanta, Georgia are making some noise in venues all across the Southeast with their blistering live shows and their recently released new album, OUT OF THE WOODS, featuring 8 tracks of old school thrash infused with a generous blend of blast beats, high energy punk, filthy breakdowns, and even some old school “mosh parts” for good measure. There’s enough fast stuff, heavy stuff, and sick stuff on this album to give anyone who hears it a complete stank face makeover. “We’ve never had this many inputs before…” We recently had a chance to hang out with EMBERING EFFIGY and do a full playthrough of OUT OF THE WOODS (deep within the insulated walls of Bunkerpoon Studios), including some track by track insights from the band as well as some Q&A about their history, their live shows, and of course the new album and everything that went into making it (along with some ultra hilarious vulgarity that’s too obscene to be mentioned here). “I want a juicy girl…” If you haven’t seen EMBERING EFFIGY live as of yet (or if you ‘blacked out’ only three songs into their set like ‘some people’…), they are definitely one of those bands you must experience extremely LOUD and LIVE, so if you need something to tide you over until you can catch one of their shows, pick up OUT OF THE WOODS and crank it up to 11! “Maybe we should be listening to THAT in the car…instead of KISS.” It’s time to “Make Thrash Dangerous Again” because we’re packed in so “tight and intimate” that whoever is in the middle is “going skiing”. Get your relaxers prepared and get ready to JOIN US for our BEHIND THE METAL local metal showcase with EMBERING EFFIGY as we crank it up a notch and get OUT OF THE WOODS. Ep 344#343 - SIDE TWO VERSUS SIDE ONE
EEver since compact discs came out in the mid-1980s, the concept of SIDE 1 and SIDE 2 on an album sort of fell by the wayside. And with this new quantum leap in technology, the entire process of consuming music began to transform. By the late 80’s and early 90’s, CD sales began outselling vinyl records and cassette tapes, due in large part to convenience and technological innovation, as vinyl records (albums) were limited to a maximum of 20 minutes or so per side and cassette tapes maxed out at around 30 minutes per side. But prior to compact discs, consuming music was (at a minimum) a two-step process which involved inserting the cassette into your tape deck and pressing play or placing the album on your turntable and dropping the needle to begin your music enjoyment experience. With the advent of compact discs, the maximum recording space jumped to 74 minutes, far exceeding the limitations of records and tapes, and bonus: you didn’t have to flip anything over and repeat the process as all of the album tracks were included on one side (so to speak) as one complete, seamless work that systematically eliminated the technologically imposed intermission which required ejecting the cassette or removing the stylus from the album and flipping it over to SIDE TWO, as a CD version of an album quickly became a singular entity devoid of one side or another and just became one complete work (think Reign In Blood on cassette, where both sides are repeated). In the case of a near perfect album, sides didn’t really matter, but what we’ve come to notice over the years is that SIDE TWO would sometimes be superior to SIDE ONE. Granted, this is not by any means an exact science nor is it always a guarantee, but many of the finest albums in metal history have a SIDE TWO that is much better than SIDE ONE. So, with that in mind, we invite you to JOIN US as we go through a few of our favorites to determine whether or not there is any validity to the claim that SIDE TWO IS BETTER THAN SIDE ONE. Ep 343#342 - Rob Zombie The Great Satan Album Review
E“Wait a minute, is she your hall pass? Can we confirm that?” Many folks in certain parts of the world have been calling the United States “The Great Satan” for decades, long before ROB ZOMBIE’s eighth studio album, THE GREAT SATAN, was called that. “…and the first words out of her mouth when she pulls up: ‘Can I inspect your meat?’” Released on 02/27/2026 on Nuclear Blast, the newest studio offering from ROB ZOMBIE, THE GREAT SATAN, has a much heavier, darker, and more aggro feel than past albums, and the album art, the album title, and the album sound all fit perfectly within the “haunted house motif” that has become part of his signature style and sound. “There’s this thing called ‘consent’…” Prepare for an accidental ADHD moment that took us down a rabbit hole into Mr. Zombie’s back catalog of albums and movies, always remember that “a rare steak is not cooked”, get ready for a big shoutout to Yelp, and find out what “PTO” actually stands for (and why you NEVER want to use it for that) when you JOIN US for a dive into the depths of hellbilly infused heavy metal brutality with ROB ZOMBIE and THE GREAT SATAN. Ep 342#341 WRATHCHILD AMERICA - Climbin' The Walls
E“He’s looking at me…” Released on August 22, 1989, CLIMBIN’ THE WALLS, the major label debut album from Martinsburg, West Virginia thrash metal savants WRATHCHILD AMERICA, is undoubtedly one of the most uniquely profound thrash metal albums in all of heavy metal history to be crafted by one of the most extraordinarily talented (and criminally underrated) bands in the entire genre. And to think, for many metalheads back in the day, their very first experience with this album was in a LIVE concert setting, opening for Testament. Just imagine how blessed one would be to see a band as unbelievable as WRATHCHILD AMERICA (for the very first time) opening for an established act like Testament and being completely blown away after just one show, having NEVER heard the album before getting to see them LIVE! “He’s making eye contact…” With a stylistic palette that blends thrash, heavy metal, and 70’s classic rock, there is absolutely NO ONE else in metal who sounds ANYTHING like them. And if you’re jonesing to purchase a copy of CLIMBIN’ THE WALLS, not to worry, because it was recently re-released (along with their second and final album, 3-D) as part of a two-CD package with a couple of bonus tracks. “Is he still lookin’ at you?” Get ready for a trip back through time to the days of yore, when thrash was still riding high and the opening band for Testament absolutely blew the minds of everyone in attendance when you JOIN US for one of the greatest and most underrated metal albums of all time with WRATHCHILD AMERICA: CLIMBIN’ THE WALLS. Ep 341#340 ANTHRAX featuring JOHN BUSH, aka BUSHTHRAX
E“If I hadn’t have known that was Anthrax, I would have guessed it was Alice In Chains…” The early 90’s was a strange time for metal, most notably due to the change in the musical landscape with the emergence of the Seattle scene and Alice In Chains becoming one of the key crossover bands to bridge the transition from thrash to the next wave of darker, grungier sounding heavy metal. “Every time you do that, I have a less chance of getting laid…” While ANTHRAX began the 90’s with a much darker and angrier sound on Persistence of Time, the darkness and heaviness of their sound would become further amplified with the departure of Joey Belladonna and the addition of JOHN BUSH (formerly of Armored Saint) on vocals, resulting in a new era of Anthrax: BUSHTHRAX! With more grit and heft in the vocals than before, the JOHN BUSH ERA of ANTHRAX is definitely a different flavor than the band’s output throughout the 80’s with Joey Belladonna, and with the changing of the guard in the early 90’s due to the growing popularity of the Seattle sound, the time was right for a slight alteration to the thrashier sounds of 80’s era ThrashThrax, resulting in the darker, more aggressive BUSHTHRAX era that would follow for the next decade or so. “Alright, well it’s not like we’ve never done that for you before…” Always remember that “springtime LSD is the best time for LSD” and that “it’s not as fun for me when I push away”. Realize that “girls with Doc Martens are kinda cute (except for when they wear ‘patrouli’)” and imagine what it’d be like “if we bled out of our dicks for a week” when you JOIN US for some 90’s era ANTHRAX featuring JOHN BUSH, aka BUSHTHRAX!!! Ep 340#339 A TRILOGY OF PERFECT METAL ALBUMS
E“That’s the buzz word: every time somebody says, ‘tipping point’, you must drink…” Whether it’s measured by a string of commercially successful albums or one’s own personal preference, almost every metal band has (at a minimum) produced a TRILOGY of albums that represent a three-album run of back-to-back-to-back awesomeness. “That’s the law, man…it’s gotta be three…rules is rules.” Granted, we’re all very well aware that some bands have far exceeded such a phenomenal feat THRICE in a row. But to keep things fair, we limited our parameters to the perfect TRIFECTA of albums representing a band’s turkey, hat trick, or as we refer to it here at Bunkerpoon Palace, “the power threesome of perfection”. “It’s a quadraplatic-ogy…” When in doubt, remember that “y’all should be more like Paul” and keep in mind that you “can’t say that word!” because “all therapists are gonna be upset”. Ep 339#338 MEGADETH Album Review
E“You know what I’m hearing? This sounds like it could have been…the sidepiece…to The Black Album…” There’s almost a strange, sarcastic satisfaction in knowing that the new self-titled MEGADETH album will forever be known (at least in our neck of the woods anyway) as “The White Album”. “Every time you keep talking, I just see shapes and letters…” Released on January 23, 2026, MEGADETH is the 17th studio album from Dave Mustaine and Company and represents the final chapter in the 40+ year history of the angriest, snarliest, and most progressively technical thrash band of The Big Four. And oh yeah, it debuted at NUMBER ONE on Billboard and at the top of the charts all over the world!!! While MEGADETH represents the band’s epilogue, it contains all of the elements that have defined the band’s sound and the ethos of the genre that they co-created with the rest of The Big Four. All of the essentials are there: insanely technical riffs, face melting guitar solos, triumphant twin guitar harmonies, as well as some more straight ahead, laid back and accessible material that screams “radio friendly” without being dull or boring. If you’re a fan, you’ll dig it. And if you’re not a fan, who knows? You too may also dig it. “Maybe it’s not pronounced ‘Tey-Muu’…it’s pronounced ‘Steve’.” Always remember that “Rugby is a man’s sport that should be having grindcore bands playing the halftime show…” and that “You’re gonna paint secret little bushes like you paint secret little bushes… (and don’t you tell anybody). Ep 338#337 AC/DC FLICK OF THE SWITCH Album Review
EOnce you reach a certain level, there is no ‘better’…it’s different.” Released on August 19, 1983, FLICK OF THE SWITCH (the 9th studio album by AC/DC and the 3rd featuring Brian Johnson on the mic) is what some fans might call their “White Album” (arriving after their “Black Album” and “Bronze Album”, respectively), showing a black and white grayscale drawing of a lone Angus pulling down some massive power, so to speak. “That’s literally ‘Bad To The Bone’ and ‘In My Time Of Dying’…” While self-produced by the band and containing a much rawer production and drier mix than the ultra-produced Mutt Lange masterpieces which came before it, FLICK OF THE SWITCH is a back-to-basics approach showing the band embracing more of their earlier blues based sound while still remaining faithful to the signature, high-energy, up-tempo jams which have become their calling card. It’s loud, straight ahead, and powerful, and while perhaps not as uber popular as the 3 albums that preceded it, FLICK is still very much an important album in the AC/DC catalog and one that would serve as a “connector” between where they had been and where they were headed. “We could have a rated R show…it doesn’t have to be X…” We’re finally back on track after getting derailed by the weather. Always remember to “wait ‘til it has some viscosity to it…” and then JOIN US for a “night time” dive into the album that would serve as the bridge into the next era of AC/DC with “The White Album” known as FLICK OF THE SWITCH. Ep 336#335 HEAVY METAL HIGH SCHOOL REUNION
E“Forbidden and Death Angel at the Center Stage was my 2nd thrash show…” Imagine learning about all of the latest and greatest metal bands without the help of Spotify or the internet. Back in THE METAL DAYS OF YORE, it was all about social networking (sans social media) and getting dubbed cassettes from your friends (or forming your own metal band with those friends) that helped you on your way towards finding the greatest and most obscure thrash and metal that you were looking for. “I almost got my ass kicked by a bunch of guys in make-up…” It’s time for a HEAVY METAL HIGH SCHOOL REUNION in The Bunkerpoon because we’ve got a very special guest with us and we’re talking all about the glory days of our metal youth. From our first thrash and arena rock shows to our first band experiences, to all of the bands we got into back in the late 80’s and early 90’s, this episode will feel like a trip back in time. “The only one of us that should have their tits out is probably Bill…” To everyone who attended (or skipped) high school during 1987 to 1992 (or thereabouts), and anyone who wonders what that experience must have been like, we invite you to JOIN US in The Bunkerpoon Lounge as we wax nostalgic about “the good old days” of ancient metal venues, early concerts, and our favorite bands and albums from our teen years with our very own HEAVY METAL HIGH SCHOOL REUNION. Ep 335#334 METAL? or NOT METAL?
E“Is it metal? Or is it NOT metal?” As metalheads, we’ve all heard some variation of this argument at least once in our lives, and the further down the rabbit hole we go, the more we truly reflect on what makes something obviously metal or obviously NOT metal. “Fish teeth is metal as fuck…” What’s the lyrical content like? The darker the subject matter, the more metal it is. Lyrics about love and happiness might be considered less metal than lyrics about drugs and wizards, or other more doom and gloom topics. “If it was distorted as fuck, then it would be metal. But it’s not, so it’s rock and roll…” How about production? How does it sound? Is it distorted and heavy? Is it really fast or extremely aggressive? More distortion and more speed in the sound equals more metal. “He’s getting high with a wizard, dude…that’s pretty metal…” Many of us who grew up with the likes of Ozzy, Dio, and Motley Crue in the early 80’s could easily tell when the boundaries started to shift between rock and metal. And of course, those are the easiest artists to reference as they each capture the majority of the traits that inherently make them metal artists: intensity and attitude, darkness and speed, distortion and heaviness. “When I think of metal, I think of…Metal Church…” There are some instances where it’s obvious whether or not something is metal (or not), and there are some where it’s not quite as cut and dry. So, if you’d like to get our take, be sure to JOIN US (along with our special guest for this episode, Mr. Bonerman) deep in The Bunkerpoon as we attempt to settle the great debate of METAL? OR NOT METAL? (because THAT is the question). Ep 334#333 – THE FIRST FOUR from the mighty PANTERA
E“I wonder if we’ll get a cease and desist on this episode…” Generally speaking, whenever someone says “Slayer” or “Metallica”, you think of two veteran thrash bands which both formed in 1981 and both released their debut albums in 1983. This is common knowledge among most fans of both of these bands. Ironically, there’s another band who follows this exact same timeline of forming in 1981 and releasing their debut album in 1983, yet at the time, they were NOT at all thrashy…not even close. Most of us know of PANTERA as the brutally heavy, groove metal masters from Arlington, Texas who lit a proverbial fire under the ass of the thrash and heavy music scene in 1990 with their “major label” debut album (with the emphasis, in this case, on the words “major label”) as CFH was actually their FIFTH studio album. Fifth? Wait a minute…what about THE FIRST FOUR studio albums!? And why are those albums not talked about and celebrated just like all things PANTERA!? Well, there’s a reason that THE FIRST FOUR aren’t really talked about or acknowledged. Actually, there are probably a multitude of reasons, but the most glaring one is the stylistic difference between their early glam and power metal days and the heavier, grittier era when they truly became the “Cowboys From Hell”. Remember those awkward Olan Mills pictures you used to take with the family, or better yet, the pictures of you in high school with that absurd, dorky hairstyle that people always like to bring up in conversation? That’s kinda what THE FIRST FOUR ALBUMS by PANTERA were like. Always remember that “Dokken is better than KISS” and you absolutely have to “pill up before PT”. Find out why “concubine” is a much cooler term than girlfriend, why the stress of having multiple families can be fatal, and realize that most doctors’ definition of “prescription pain medication” is painfully incorrect and a complete waste of a prescription pad. Get ready to find out which Pantera album came out on Rex’s 20th birthday, which song features Dime on lead vocals, and understand that while we absolutely did not plan for this to be episode 333, it just so happened to turn out that way. Brace yourselves and get your relaxers ready before you JOIN US as we go back to the 80’s to get a better idea of why one of the greatest metal bands of all time tried to bury their earliest work (and original “not as metal” logo) with THE FIRST FOUR from the mighty PANTERA. Ep 333#332 ANTHRAX WORSHIP MUSIC Album Review
E“I’m not Peter North shooting ropes across the room…” Released on September 12th (and in the U.S. on the 13th), 2011, WORSHIP MUSIC is the first ANTHRAX album featuring Joey Belladonna on vocals since 1990’s Persistence of Time and is truly a return to their thrash roots, with a nice blend of classic 80’s era Thrash Thrax and the more groove laden heaviness of 90’s era Bush Thrax. This was definitely a comeback album for them and kicks off the 2010’s era with loudness, fastness, and awesomeness. Discover “the most Christmasy sounding porn name”, find out what it really means when “the handy dude” comes over and starts “cleaning the gutters”, and be sure to enjoy Boxing Day Eve when you JOIN US as we dive into the revival of Joey era Thrash Thrax with WORSHIP MUSIC.
