In one of David's final actions before his death, he commands Joab to take a census of the fighting men. Joab and the army commanders refute David's command, but David persists. As the results of the census come in, David is convicted of the sin of pride and possibly greed and as a consequence of this sin, a plague strikes Israel which only David's intercession upon the future temple mount could atone for.
