Meanwhile, back in Judah, Jehoiakim continues his reign in Jerusalem. Seduced by promises of support from Egypt, Jehoiakim stops making his tribute payments to Babylon. In turn, Nebuchadnezzar marches his army to attack Jerusalem. Fearing the worst and the fulfillment of Jeremiah's prophecies, Jehoiakim opens the gates to the Babylonians again and pleads for mercy.
