Law-enforcement officers walk into danger every day. Sometimes there may only be a split second recognize whether this person has mental illness or dementia. Training is necessary to recognize these deficits in an individual.

Join us as we listen to one amazing, retired law-enforcement officer and his experience with dementia and autism training and awareness. A Better Understanding LLC with Tim Sutton

Tim Sutton is a retired 34 year veteran Law Enforcement Officer. After spending 4 years as a patrolman for the Chesterfield County Police Department VA, he was hired by the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office in Virginia. Tim then worked as a patrol deputy for two years and then spent four years as a Street Crimes Investigator. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 1999 and performed as a patrol Sergeant until January of 2023. In 2003, he implemented a tracking system for his agency that addressed the issue of individuals wandering or eloping due to cognitive impairment. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree from James Madison University.

Tim formed A Better Understanding LLC (www.tim-sutton.com) in 2011 to raise awareness and trained public safety officers on Alzheimer’s Disease, Autism Spectrum Disorders, and other disabilities. Tim has been deemed a subject matter expert by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services and The International Association of Chiefs of Police on Alzheimer’s as it relates to Law Enforcement. The Virginia DCJS has also declared him a subject matter expert in the area of Autism/Intellectual Disability as they relate to law enforcement. He has been certified by the Circuit Court of Hanover County VA as a Subject Matter Expert in the area of Autism as it relates to Law Enforcement.

Tim’s goal with A Better Understanding LLC is to promote Peaceful Interactions for Positive Outcomes. In 2022, Tim began podcast which can been seen and heard on all major platforms. A New Perspective with Tim Sutton brings attention to those in the Disability (Differ’ability) Community who are doing amazing things. The show is to educate, entertain, and inform viewers on the amazing abilities of those with Differ’abilities.

Tim is also vice president of a nonprofit named A Better Understanding (www.abetterunderstanding.org). ABU’s mission is to provide community events for our friends with Differ’abilities. ABU educates, and raises awareness for individuals and companies who are making a difference in our community.
