Sermon Notes:

Main idea: In Luke 18:31-20:20 we see who Jesus is, and how we should respond to him, so that we will joyfully receive Jesus now and be ready for his next arrival, having done the things that make for peace.

  1. Who is Jesus?

    a. Son of David (18:38-39)

    b. Son of Man (19:10)

    c. King (Luke 19:11-27, 19:38-48)

    d. God’s Beloved Son (20:13)

    e. Prophet (18:31-33, 19:41-44, 20:16)

    f. The Fulfillment of Prophecy (18:31-33)

    g. Giver of Mercy, Salvation, and Peace (18:38-39, 19:10, 19:42)

  2. How should we respond to Jesus?

    a. Carefully avoid the things that do not make for peace:

    i. Grumbling at Jesus and his disciples (19:6)

ii. Rebuking Jesus and his disciples (18:39, 19:39)

iii. Remaining Uncommitted to Jesus (19:1-8)

iv. Committing to Jesus in word but not in deed (19:19-21)

    v. Rejecting Jesus the cornerstone (19:47-48, 14-15, 20:1-8)

    b. Joyfully embrace the things that do make for peace:

    i. Believing like Bartimaeus (18:35-43)

    ii. Repenting like Zacchaeus (19:1-10)

iii. Rejoicing like the disciples (19:37-38)

iv. Laboring like the good servant (19:13-17)
