JJ Zacahariason and the Late-Round Draft Guide on Matt Waldman’s RSP Cast
JJ Zachariason of Late-Round Fantasy Football stops by Matt Waldman's RSP Cast to discuss his 2024 Late-Round Draft Guide and where they converge and diverge on this year's fantasy prospects. https://youtu.be/odl7bZPYols JJ Zachariason is someone most of you know. If you don't, you should get to know his work at Late-Round Fantasy Football. Like the RSP, JJ runs his own shop and he's dedicated to delivering quality content. His guides are informative and enjoyable reads. You'll become a better fantasy GM because of his knowledge of game theory and data analysis fused with the range of proven draft-day strategies in the space. JJ and I had a great time talking about rookie prospects this spring on his Late-Round Perspectives Podcast. This week, we delve into JJ's wheelhouse of fantasy strategies and some of the players who we think may help or hurt your team-building this season. Why we value "the why" with our work? JJ's approach to outliers? The game theory behind JJ touting Brock Purdy or Tua Tagovailoa at their price over C.J. Stroud. JJ reviews the RB Dead Zone and the type of backs to consider in that fantasy minefield. JJ's thoughts on Kyren Williams in 2024. JJ's increasing value for De'Von Achane. Josh Jacobs-Marshawn Lloyd and the impact of Green Bay's coaching dynamic. Thoughts on Dalton Kincaid, Luke Musgrave, DeAndre Hopkins, Tyjae Spears, Jayden Daniels, Jonathon Brooks, and Malik Nabers. Once again, we thoroughly enjoyed the conversation. Hopefully, you will as well. Combine 40 Times in Perspective and the “Big Four” ’24 RB Free Agents: RSP Film and Theory with Adam Harstad and Matt Waldman
Footballguys staff writer Adam Harstad joins RSP Film and Theory as Matt Waldman’s cohost for the 2024 football season to discuss practices that will make you a better fantasy GM and NFL fan. We take a break this week to discuss the NFL Combine's 40 Times and RB free agent class. There are a lot of excellent writers and analysts in the fantasy industry. There are few that I hold in as high a regard as Adam (and not surprising he earned the FSWA's Fantasy Writer of the Year this week). He’s a forthright human being with a tremendous intellect whose approach to analysis in this space differs from most. He’s also an excellent fantasy GM in re-draft and dynasty formats. Unlike Dwain McFarland, whose work delves into the statistical process, Adam spends a lot of time examining results and dealing with broad themes of decision-making that help us become better fantasy players and fantasy analysts. Adam’s 2023 Post-Rookie-Year Prospect Model: RSP Film and Theory with Adam Harstad and Matt Waldman
Adam Harstad has finished his post-rookie-year-WR prospect model and we break down the list of 19 receivers from the 2023 class who made the model, including a Packer you'd expect and one you wouldn't. Footballguys staff writer Adam Harstad joins RSP Film and Data as Matt Waldman’s cohost for the 2023 football season to discuss practices that will make you a better fantasy GM and NFL fan. There are a lot of excellent writers and analysts in the fantasy industry. There are few that I hold in as high a regard as Adam. Topic Here's every 2023 rookie with at least 250 routes in all their glorious splendor. I did cheat a little to get Mims on here: he only had 245 routes (although he did miss a game). We had 19 (officially 18) qualifiers, which is demented. Previous record was 15 in 2014 (natch). pic.twitter.com/RxWg53DMz1 — Adam Harstad (@AdamHarstad) January 11, 2024 And of course, if you want to know about the rookies from this draft class, you will find the most in-depth analysis of offensive skill players available (QB, RB, WR, and TE), with the 2024 Rookie Scouting Portfolio for $21.95–currently available for $19.95 via early-bird discount that runs through December 21, 2023. The Safest RB in the Draft, the Sleeper Miscast as a Gadget, the Keon Coleman Rollercoaster, and Penix and Punishment: Going Deep with Brandon Angelo and Matt Waldman
On this week’s episode of the Going Deep podcast, Brandon Angelo and Matt Waldman discuss an RB and WR who might be safer than their likely draft capital, the buzz rollercoaster that is Keon Coleman, Michael Penix's punishing career, and the futures of Bill Belichick and Mike Vrabel. After doing a few podcasts together during the past 12 months, Brandon and I decided we would enjoy having a recurring show to discuss aspects of player evaluation and NFL Draft topics that you don’t often hear about in mainstream media. This pre-draft pod about the NFL’s disparities with 40 times and several more ’23 draft and free agent topics is a must-listen. Going Deep will feature podcasts twice a month. You can either watch/listen on YouTube, listen from the player at the bottom of the page, or download the podcast at most outlets, including Google, Spotify, and iTunes. This Week’s Topics Is Bill Belichick's future in the front office or on the field? Why the Titans screwed up with Mike Vrabel. Brandon's pick for safest RB in the draft and why Matt sees similarities to a pair of Ravens. Is Kyren Williams' archetype about to become the NFL norm for running backs? Why do some breakaway RBs often encounter more difficulties adapting to the NFL than slower RBs? Profiling FSU WR Keon Coleman, his potential fit in the NFL, and the rollercoaster of takes surrounding his game. Which WR in this draft class is seen as a gadget player but is getting underrated because gadgets have proven to be overrated? Did Michigan reveal that Michael Penix, Jr. has taken too much punishment at Indiana before transferring to Washington and it may be too difficult for him to overcome in the NFL? The fallacy of the label "system quarterback." Is Lamar Jackson more of a system quarterback than Brock Purdy? Why that's not a knock on either player. The dynamics of controlled pacing. A film breakdown of James Cook showing his pacing control in college. Why smaller backs may be the immediate future for the NFL. Why Marvin Harrison, Jr. is a strong prospect but the expectations are too high for his immediate impact. Why Malik Nabers should be earning the expectations Harrison has earned. What Is Happening to NFL Careers? Something Is Happening to Older Players: RSP Film and Theory with Adam Harstad and Matt Waldman
Adam Harstad examined production among older NFL players and he's stumbled upon a "What" without a "Why." He and Matt Waldman discuss on this week's RSP Film and Theory. Topic I'll let Adam Harstad's intro from his Footballguys feature, Dynasty, In Theory, do the job of teeing up this week's topic: For a long time, it was taken as an article of faith that advancements in training, nutrition, and medical science (as well as an increased focus on player health and safety) would extend careers. And a few high-profile outliers likely convinced many that that was taking place. Tom Brady won an MVP at age 40 and was a second-team All-Pro at 44. Travis Kelce is likely to make his ninth straight Pro Bowl at age 34 and is a good bet to earn his fifth first-team All-Pro while he's at it. Adrian Peterson had 1200 scrimmage yards at 33, 1000 scrimmage yards at 34, and even recorded a 100-yard effort in his first game with a new team at age 35. Frank Gore started 14 games at 37. But outliers have always existed. Marcus Allen logged 1100 scrimmage yards at age 35 and 36 back in the '90s. John Riggins logged 380 touches and was a first-team All Pro at age 34 in the '80s. Joe Perry was a regular starter to age 35 back in the '60s. Y.A. Tittle won an MVP at age 37 back in 1963. Don Maynard, Charlie Joiner, and Jerry Rice set standards for longevity in the '70s, '80s, '90s, and '00s. The best way to track longevity is not through the single oldest player at a given position but through the prevalence of old players in general. And on that count, the last decade has been one of the worst in history. And of course, if you want to know about the rookies from this draft class, you will find the most in-depth analysis of offensive skill players available (QB, RB, WR, and TE), with the 2024 Rookie Scouting Portfolio for $21.95–currently available for $19.95 via early-bird discount that runs through December 21, 2023.
