Welcome back, and thanks for joining us. Today we continue our sermon series, What We Believe, drawn from the New City Catechism. If we cannot save ourselves, then where can true rescue be found? And if Jesus alone provides that salvation, what keeps us from placing our full trust in Him? Find out in this week's sermon brought by Manoa's very own Dan Crum.

AFTER DEATH YOUR... 1. Soul enters Heaven or Hell (Luke 23:42-43) 2. Body rests in Bed or Prison (Daniel 12:2) 3. Future ends in Life or Exile (John 5:28–29) WESTMINSTER (SEE CHAPTERS 32-33) Q. What Happens After Death? A. At death, those united to Christ enter Heaven while their bodies rest as in a bed; but the wicked enter Hell while their bodies are held as in a prison. At the resurrection, the redeemed will be made perfectly whole to enjoy God forever, while the lost will be cast out from His presence into eternal exile (WCF 32.1; 33.1–2; WLC 86; 89; 90; WSC 37; 38).

Are all people, just as they were lost through Adam, saved through Christ? A27. No, only those who are elected by God and united to Christ by faith. Nevertheless, God in his mercy demonstrates common grace even to those who are not elect, by restraining sin and enabling works of culture for the common good (WCF 3.3–7; 7.3; 8.8; 10.1, 4; 11.4; WSC 20, 21; WLC 13, 59, 60, 61, 68).

What else does Christ’s death redeem? A: Christ's death is the beginning of the redemption and renewal of every part of fallen creation, as he powerfully directs all things for his own glory and creation's good (WCF 8.8; WCF 33.1; WLC 54; WSC 28; WSC 38).

YES, I AM FORGIVEN... 1. The Debt is Canceled (Colossians 2:13–14) 2. The Wealth is Credited (Romans 4:4–5) 3. The Memory is Forgotten (Hebrews 8:12) New City Catechism Question 25: Does Christ’s death mean all our sins can be forgiven? Answer: Yes, because Christ’s death on the cross fully paid the penalty for our sin, God graciously imputes Christ’s righteousness to us as if it were our own and will remember our sins no more (WCF 8.4–5, 11.1, 11.3, 15.3; WSC Q.25, 33; WLC Q.38, 44, 70, 71, 77).

A: That in human nature he might on our behalf perfectly obey the whole law and suffer the punishment for human sin; and also that he might sympathize with our weaknesses (WCF 8.2, 8.4; WLC 40; WSC 21–22).

OUR BRIDGE BACK TO GOD IS A... 1. Human Redeemer (Hebrews 2:14, 17) 2. Divine Redeemer (Colossians 1:19-20) 3. Group Redeemer (Ephesians 2:13-14) Q21. What sort of Redeemer is needed to bring us back to God? A. One who is truly human and also truly God (WCF 8.1–8.4; WLC Q29; WSC Q21).

Reconciles Us to God (2 Corinthians 5:18-20) Question: Is there any way to escape punishment and be brought back into God's favor?Answer: Yes, to satisfy his justice, God himself, out of mere mercy, reconciles us to himself and delivers us from sin and from the punishment for sin, by a Redeemer (WCF 7.3; 8.1, 8.5; WSC 20–21, 25; WLC 30, 38, 71).

WHAT IS IDOLATRY? 1. The Exchange of Idolatry (Romans 1:21, 25) 2. The Punishment for Idolatry (Ephesians 5:5-6) 3. The Rescue from Idolatry (1 Thessalonians 1:9-10) Question 17: What is idolatry? Answer: Idolatry is trusting in created things rather than the Creator for our hope and happiness, significance and security (WCF 2.2; 21.1–2; 22.1; WSC 46–48; WLC 105–106). Question 18: Will God allow our disobedience and idolatry to go unpunished? Answer: No, God is righteously angry with our sins and will punish them both in this life and in the life to come (WCF 5.5–6; 6.6; 33.1–2; WSC 19; 84–85; WLC 28–29; 152).

WHAT IS SIN? SIN...1. Rejects the Creator (Psalm 14:1)2. Breaks God's Law (1 John 3:4)3. WE GLORIFY GOD BY 1. Trusting God (Prov. 3:5–6) 2. Obeying God (1 John 2:3–5) 3. Enjoying God (Psalm 16:11) New City Catechism Q6: How can we glorify God? A: We glorify God by enjoying him, loving him, trusting him, and by obeying his will, commands, and law.

Question 5: What else did God create? Answer: God created all things by his powerful Word, and all his creation was very good; everything flourished under his loving rule. GOD CREATED ALL THINGS... 1. By His Powerful Word (Hebrews 11:3) 2. To Be Very Good (Genesis 1:3-31) 3. To Flourish Under His Rule (Ps.145:13, 16)

How many persons are there in God? ANSWER: "There are three persons in the one true and living God: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. They are the same in substance, equal in power and glory." THE TRINITY 1. There is one true and living God. 2. The Father is God, the Son is God, the Holy Spirit is God. 3. The Father is not the Son, the Son is not the Spirit, the Spirit is not the Father.

WHAT IS GOD?1. God is the creator and sustainer of everyone and everything (Rev. 4:11)2. God is eternal, infinite & unchangeable (Ps. 102:25-27)3. God is perfect in power, goodness and glory, wisdom, justice, and truth (Ps. 18:30)4. Nothing happens except through God and by his will (Eph. 1:11) QUESTION 2: What is God?ANSWER: "God is the creator and sustainer of everyone and everything. He is eternal, infinite, and unchangeable in his power and perfection, goodness and glory, wisdom, justice, and truth. Nothing happens except through him and by his will."
