On March 10, 1971, the U.S. Senate unanimously approved the 26th Amendment, lowering the voting age from 21 to 18. The House followed suit, and the amendment was ratified in record time, becoming law in July. The impetus? The Vietnam War, where young men were fighting but couldnt vote. The amendment was in place for the 1972 elections.
