On March 20, 1854, in Ripon, Wisconsin, Free Soilers and Whigs convened to discuss a new political party, the Republican Party, in response to the Kansas-Nebraska Act. This act, championed by Senator Stephen Douglas, allowed settlers to vote on slavery, sparking outrage among anti-slavery groups. Alvan E. Bovay proposed the name Republican at this meeting, marking the first recorded push for such a party and its inception.
