Madisons electric bus fleet, introduced last fall, is performing exceptionally well in cold weather, even surpassing diesel buses in reliability. The buses, made by New Flyer, use on-route pantograph chargers to top off without returning to the depot, boosting uptime. Despite earlier challenges with Proterra batteries, energy density improvements have reduced range drops in cold weather. Maintenance remains complex due to electronics and harder-to-source parts, but weather is not causing service cuts. Overhead charging costs as much as the buses but saves by needing fewer vehicles. Other cold cities are also expanding electric fleets, aiming for net-zero goals by 2050.
