MFP 122: We Need a Break

Whew…2019 has been a whirlwind of awesome opportunities and new beginnings for John and I. The biggest of course was John getting married, but also this year my wife Susan came on full time with FTBT. John brought on his full time editor, Sam, and we’ve both take on loads of new work and opportunities that have had us travelling and getting involved in new business planning ideas. On top of that John is going through a full house remodel and looking at buying another property. Yeah, lots of stuff. So basically what I’m getting at here is we need a break. We’ve got 6 or 7 weeks left in the year and we need to finish strong. But don’t worry, we’ll be back in 2020. Things may look a little different then, but we’ll cross that bridge when we get there. Today John is still out and I’m talking with one of my oldest friends in the online woodworking community. He’s sold products into all 50 states as well as overseas. Through several life changes and moves Andrew’s business changed with him until he finally decided to pivot to a new venture. MFP 119: A Day with Gary Vee

John just got married this week. So I (Brad) gave him a break to take care of all the fun last minute wedding planning. But I thought this would be a great chance to talk about an awesome opportunity I recently had. I spent a full day with Gary Vee and his team, okay he was really only in the room for about 75 minutes, but it was a really insightful session and I wanted to share some things I took away from it. Today we’re diving into the murky world of influencer marketing and the different ways that companies might be reaching out to you. MFP 114: Building Systems with Mike Farrington

Today we’re talking with a guy who’s been working the trades his whole life. Mike Farrington cut his teeth in construction working his way through school. And after a quick stint working a desk job he went back to his love for building. He’s built a successful custom woodworking business over the last 15 years and in the past 2 years has branched out to YouTube. Mike talks with us today about how setting up systems has helped his workflow, how he deals with tire kicking customers, and his approach for getting deals on tools. Mike has easily become one of John’s personal favorite YouTubers as he’s a master of his craft and of his own brand. With his channel recently surpassing 100k subscribers he’s well worth checking out. He continues to grow his channel and show off some super impressive skills. I am personally always impressed with anyone who can balance making content along with handling a custom work load. This was quite an enjoyable conversation! MFP 113: When To Pivot Your Business

Things were going great. It was 2013, pallet wood and rustic furniture was so hot. You were killing it and backlogged for months. Now it’s 2019 and unless you’re Paul Jackman the pallet wood trend is dead in the water. And if you’re business was heavily focused on that trend then you’re either scrounging for work or have pivoted to the next trend or a new focus area. This is an example of a need to pivot your business from a negative impact, but you can also pivot to take advantage of a positive opportunity. Today we’ll talk about how we’ve made our own pivots in content and other areas and the thought process we took while doing it. The sponsor of today’s episode is 3M. MFP 112: Finding Balance with Jason Radcliffe of 44 Steel

We’re jumping back into the metalworking side of making with today’s guest. Jason Radcliffe is a custom metalworker who’s been building his business for almost 20 years. He has a unique setup where he’s actually still working a day job but one that compliments his metalworking. Jason talks to us about how he balances both his jobs while still finding time to take a breath and enjoy time with his wife and his personal interests. Jason started his business, 44 Steel, in 2005, and as Brad said had been growing it on the side. He was featured on the TV Show Framework, with our guest and friend. Jory Brigham. And actually has a class he teaches with Jory a few times a year, which I will personally be at the end of October helping out. Jason’s been hustling for a long time, and though he may not be a monster on the social media scene, hes for sure a monster behind the scenes. With contracts for product lines from large manufacturing companies, to having his products featured in prominent NYC showrooms , Jason is a beast no doubt! It was an awesome learning how a side hustler is truly maximizing his business, and changing it up a bit with metal and not woodwork on this episode! MFP 111: Are You Worth Free Product?

Some of you are on that grind trying to get to 5 or 10,000 followers on IG before you reach out and work with brands. On the other hand it’s a bit of the wild west out there right now and we’re seeing and hearing more and more folks who’ve got 50 or 100 followers and are reaching out requesting free product from companies left and right. Today we’ll talk about where the balance is between the value you add to a brand vs. what they give to you. The sponsor of today’s episode is Woodcraft. MFP 110: Finding Your Audience with Evan & Katelyn

We’ve got a fun interview today with our favorite maker husband and wife duo, Evan and Katelyn. They’ve been running heavy as full time content creators just over a year now. They ran a small goods business selling wholesale into West Elm before going all-in on content. It’s a great conversation on the transition from full time jobs, to side hustle, to full time content creators. They also go into how they found their new audience and have pivoted their channel and are seeing massive gains. Evan and Katelyn are killing it. Just straight up killing it. Scooping up over 200k new subscribers this year alone, they have recently passed 390k and may even be over 400k as we speak! With 26 million channel views on youtube, these two are what we call “in the pocket”. And not to mention, have been listeners and were early patreon supporters on MFP. We have a ton of fun on this one, and I almost filled up a whole notebook with information from our chat! To grow a successful business it takes dedication, hard work, consistency, a good business plan, new customers, and about 50 other things. MFP 106: Putting in the Time with Paul Jackman from Jackman Works

We’ve got an oversized episode for you today, or should I say, Jackman sized.  Paul Jackman has built a strong YouTube and online following in the maker space in an unconventional way.  He was educated in the skilled trades, but found his passion in a more artistic approach to building. And the results are Paul building things like a 16 times scale folding knife and a life size nutcraker both made out of pallet wood he breaks down and processes.  Today Paul talks about the journey to where he is now and how putting in the time in different aspects of his business has helped set him apart. Paul is not only one of the most sought after “male models” on the internet, but he’s an impressive influencer in the maker community as well. With 260k+ Subscribers on youtube and a growing instagram following of 60k+ and is also an avid user of the ever mystifying Reddit. Paul brings a lot of personality and interesting approaches to typical menial tasks. This show is one of my favorites. MFP 091: Contracts, Do You Actually Need Them?

As you start becoming a legit business you start dealing with more and more clients and transactions. And every transaction is a chance to delight your customers and give them everything they wanted…or a chance for miscommunication, false expectations, undelivered promises, and two parties left playing he said/ she said. We’d all like the first scenario rather than the second and having a contract for each transaction will help get you there. Today we’ll talk about the important things to consider when locking down a contract with your clients….and in no way is this legal advice. THIS RECORDING IS NOT INTENDED TO BE LEGAL ADVICE. SEEK AN ATTORNEY TO REVIEW YOUR CONTRACTS No it is not legal advice, but if you do want some good advice it would be to attend this years, Spring Make. MFP 087: Workbench Con 2019 Recap & Takeaways

John and I just got back from Workbench Con down in Atlanta and today we’re going to recap some of the learnings we took away. We’ve talk about it before but Workbench Con is a conference for makers to help grow their business through networking, specific classes on social media, video editing, blogs and more. Plus there are a ton of brands there from the woodworking and DIY space. We’ll hit you with some solid takeaways we got from the event and why it’s quickly become one of our favorite shows. This episode is brought to you by Audible. In episode 85 we talked about burn out and we found ourselves in a lot of conversations with our listeners about staying motivated. So I wanted to personally take a second and recommend a book I recently finished called “Can’t hurt me: Master Your Mind and Defy The Odds” by David Goggins. David is a former Navy Seal and Arm Ranger who runs 100 mile marathons and is an absolute beast. When I downloaded the book i did it because I have an admiration for our service men and women and wanted to hear a good story. When i finished it i wanted to run through a wall! They put a cool spin that isn’t available in the physical book into the audio version. It’s sort of like a podcast mashed up with an interview. MFP 086: The Creative Process with Laura Kampf

Today we have an interview with our favorite German maker, Laura Kampf. Laura’s builds are born out of pure creativity as she repurposes and reconfigures old and new items alike into amazing creations. She thrives on the challenge of coming up with new ideas and keeping the pureness of creativity front and center. She talks with us about the balance between being an artist and a businesswoman, how to monetize without sacrificing your brand’s vision as an artist and craftswoman, and how she works through the creative process. Laura has been a huge influence to the maker community since she hit the scene, amassing over 330K YouTube subscribers in just a few years. With her eye for the cinematic, and an amazing style, Laura is inspiring makers all over the world myself and brad included. She is a ball of inspiration and energy and we’re super excited to have her on the show! But before we dive into the show we want to thank this week’s sponsor, Spring Make. Spring Make is the only event for makers marrying Skill Building and Brand Building with hands on experience and workshops with some of the maker communities biggest names. This year’s show takes place in Cleveland Ohio on April 25-27, and not only are we both super stoked to be teaching at the show this year, but we’re also very excited because Laura happens to be one of the instructors as well. She’ll be teaching a course called So You Want To Do This for a Living?, and Brad and I are both pumped about it! MFP 082: Brand Talk with Craig Coffey from Lincoln Electric

We are launching a “brand” new series today with our interviews. As a compliment to our talks with awesome makers and content creators we’re flipping it to the other side of the table and interviewing leaders from the brands themselves. We’re starting off our Brand Talk series with our friend Craig Coffey who is the Director of Marketing and Communications at Lincoln Electric. Craig has been with Lincoln for 7 years, managing the marketing and communications for the massive welding company. Hes brought on some heavy hitters influencers in the maker space, and is on the show today to tell us about how he thinks creators can work better with brands, and to talk a bit about their upcoming event, Spring Make. Craig gets into the details of Spring Make during the show, so stay tuned for all the info about that later on. But we have an exclusive offer for MFP Listeners! Save $200 on the Spring Make conference pass or a Conference Pass plus a Crash Course by using the discount code MADEFORPROFIT at checkout. Visit SpringMakeShow.com for details.
