Ep 337337. Dr Carrie Jones - Your hormones that don’t get enough publicity!
One of the show’s most popular guests (and I don’t like to pick favourite children, but one of mine too!) Dr Carrie Jones is back for the 3rd time on the show - can we call that a trilogy? Let’s, sounds super-hero-ish! Estrogen and progesterone get a lot of press in women’s health and hormone discussions, and rightly so. There are, however, some less talked about hormones that can have a huge impact on your health and on working through complex puzzles you might be trying to solve so we are pulling those hormones out of the shadows and talking about their impact on today’s show - melatonin, DHEA, prolactin (not just to do with breastfeeding btw!) and some of the hormones that cross over into neurotransmitter land…If somehow just discovering her for the first time, Carrie Jones, ND, FABNE, MPH is an internationally recognized speaker, consultant, and educator on the topic of women's health and hormones with over 20 years in the industry. Dubbed the “Queen of Hormones,” Dr. Jones is a Naturopathic Physician who did her 2-year residency focused on women's health and endocrinology. She went on to get her Master of Public Health and was one of the first to become board certified through the American Board of Naturopathic Endocrinology for which she served on the board for several years. She hosts the highly popular show, the Root Cause Medicine Podcast which has over 3 million downloads. She is the Clinical Expert for the Lifestyle Matrix Resource Center and is on Under Armour’s Human Performance Council. Currently, she is the Chief Medical Officer at NuEthix Formulations and Head of Medical Education at Metabolic Mentor University. Ep 336336. Jade Miles: What is a Sustainable Table and how do we drive a truly regenerative shift in farming
This show, I chat to Jade Miles, author, podcaster, regenerative heritage fruit farmer, homesteading workshop facilitator and CEO of Sustainable Table. A fellow poly-jobist! Today we ask the all-important question: What really is a sustainable table and how to we effect big, systemic change when it comes to farming - from degenerative, to regenerative and truly sustainable? Jade has driven a catalytic change in direction at Sustainable Table from a once small scale Victorian based, education enterprise that connected eaters to their food and the growers who created it, to its current-day vision of transforming farming, food, and fibre systems through regenerative ways of being, doing and knowing. Grounded in care for people and planet, her team facilitates connection, collaboration, funding, and learning to catalyse change across Australia. “Every decision we make has an impact - on other humans, creatures and ecosystems. How do you make your decisions and will their impact be degenerative, sustainable or regenerative? Today’s show is a balm for those wanting a better way forward for our planet that doesn’t always have a corporate giant or billionaire behind it. I hope you love it and look forward to hearing what your ‘enough’ is as we discuss it towards the end of the show. Ep 335335. Alexx Stuart talks ADHD - her diagnosis, processing of it, thoughts on how society can do better and more.
This week’s show is just me - Alexx Stuart, founder of Low Tox Life and host of the Low Tox Life podcast that you’re listening to right now and I’m talking about ADHD and me - and you! I founded Low Tox Life back in 2009 because I wanted - for myself, family and friends a lifestyle where doing a little better than yesterday across food, body, home and mind - and of course care for our planet home and over the years it’s meant I’ve produced this show, written two books, spoke at countless events, written 10 e-courses to support people in their low tox goals and over 200 gluten-free recipes and 100 blogs on reducing toxin impact in our every day. Sheesh. “How can you have ADHD having achieved all that?” is something I often get asked and today might give you a window into it. Giving someone the gift of sticking to their passions, zone of genius and strengths allows for results to happen - it doesn’t happen often in the average workplace but when you work for yourself or a great boss you can! Today’s show isn’t all about the good bits though as there are many challenges, too. When I shared I’d had an ADHD diagnosis (combined-type) in January, naturally people in our low tox community had questions, and so in this show this week I share: Why I sought diagnosis / why I suspected itHow I felt about that and began to process itThe excellent aspects of what it revealedThe unfortunate and sad aspects of what it revealed as it played out in my life growing up and at work and in lifeHow much sweeter life is when you feel supported for who you areHow the world would benefit from recognising differences in people’s brains and the ways they produce great work, contribute and express themselves. The aspects or traits that are ‘modifyable’ vs fixed and how genetics plays a role as well as trauma, environmental toxins and head injury to name a few ‘cherries on top’What I’m doing to work with the challenges of ADHDThe answers to a bunch of community questions about ADHDAnd believe it or not - even more! It’s 90 mins and I did. Not. stop. Talking. I bring you: ADHD. Hehe IYKYK. Here are some of the health professionals and resources I mentioned in the show: Some work and definitions that may help by various Drs who focus on the condition: Dr Russell Barkley: https://www.russellbarkley.org/factsheets/WhatCausesADHD2017.pdfDr James Greenblatt https://www.psychiatryredefined.org/finally-focused-mineral-imbalances-adhd-part-ii/Dr Daniel Amen https://www.amenclinics.com/conditions/adhd-add/The magnesium complex I take that I mentioned https://au.iherb.com/pr/dr-sinatra-magnesium-broad-spectrum-complex-120-capsules/101150And the rest is best to chat to a practitioner about therapeutic doses and what you specifically might benefit from. Difference between actions of medications https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w44BXLATt5wFollow me at @lowtoxlife on Instagram and share any more questions about the topic or an AHA. Here’s to celebrating who we are, being celebrated for it, as well as supported for what we find challenging. Now wouldn’t that be a lovely world indeed? Alexx x Hosted on Acast. Ep 334334. Exploring Neuroinflammation and mental health, with Brendan Vermeire
Is there a challenge for you around mental health or neuro-inflammation right now or someone you know? Often there is a lot to unpack across the whole landscape of health contributors and negative impacts, before deciding where to start. In today’s show, I have my friend Brendan Vermeire back on the show to unpack neuroinflammation and mental health more deeply from the last time he was on the show (show #277) - Brendan is the proud owner and founder of the Metabolic Solutions Institute for Functional Health and Fitness Practitioners and the creator of the Functional Mental Health Practitioner Certificate Course. He is also the founder of the Metabolic Solutions Research & Education Foundation, a not-for-profit foundation dedicated to ‘changing the way the world views mental health’ through advancing the science of Mental Health Dysfunction. He is also the creator of The Mental M.A.P.™, a cutting-edge Lab Panel for Mental Health. I know you’ll enjoy this explorative conversation around some of the trickier aspects of diagnosing, treating and healing in the mental health and neuro-inflammation space and you can head to the show notes for more, or these handy links below: Show notes: lowtoxlife.com/podcastInstagram: @lowtoxlife Instagram: @the_holistic_savageResources page on Brendan’s websiteAnd the questions I asked along the way: Identifying and addressing physiological root causes can make facing psychological root causes, such as unresolved trauma, more manageable.Root cause investigation can be a trauma response - Let's unpack that. - Another one is "Are self limiting beliefs your root cause"?High Cortisol due to prolonged stress/trauma is linked to decreased brain volume - wow, can you talk us through that? Research suggested that inflammation can increase susceptibility to PTSD. And then you go on to say trauma itself may increase inflammation - so is it a case of 'which one came first?' in the individual?Mold and mycotox are a major etiological root cause for neurodegeneration/mental illness. And then a couple of philosophical questions... where is the line to dance between personal responsibility + a helping hand for optimal health?Who you are (label given say with a diagnosis) and how much of that can fluctuate/be worked on vs how much is really you in all your uniqueness? Ep 332332. Late Diagnosis ADHD: Jules Galloway & Alexx Stuart talk about their experiences so far.
This week I invite my friend and colleague Jules Galloway, naturopath & herbalist onto the show to discuss our journeys in late diagnosis ADHD this past year. We don’t have all the answers. There aren’t protocols we’re sharing or ways of ‘getting rid of the symptoms’ but it’s an exploration of why we both chose to get diagnosed, some of the things we’ve been exploring, thinking and feeling as we’ve looked back at our lives, and where we’ve arrived in places - also admitting there’s still so much to unpack. I will also record a personal show in a couple of weeks with audience questions that have come from Instagram and that will come from the community once you’ve listened to this one. Jules and per husband James Galloway, also host a podcast called LD ADHD which you can go and explore. Please do get the support you need - life is much better when we know and accept ourselves and also feel empowered to change what we can for the better, through support, therapies and various other tools. Ep 331331. The Tiger Protocol to reverse disease with Dr. Akil Palanisamy
Perhaps the best doctors to usher us into the new integrative era of medicine and root cause approaches, are the conventional doctors for whom a health crisis occured and they realised the tools they had been given we’re enough. This is a pattern I’ve noticed in interviewing now hundreds of doctors over the years and Akil is one such person. In today’s show we discuss why the integrative approach is far superior to conventional when it comes to the chronic disease epidemics we’re seeing all ovewr the world and how the protocol he has researched and developed over the years in his practice combines the best of multiple disciplines to support people in losing weight, gaming energy and reversing disease. Dr. Akil Palanisamy is a Harvard-trained physician, integrative medicine expert and author of The T.I.G.E.R. Protocol. Akil practices integrative medicine, blending his conventional medical expertise with holistic approaches including functional medicine and Ayurveda. For the past 15 years, he has extensively studied the science behind herbal therapies and new, sustainable approaches for protecting health in a proactive, preventative way, rather than waiting for something bad to happen.Today, Dr. Rawls shares the revelations that helped him and thousands of others reclaim their lives. In his suicide note, he wrote that he would have never told us how he felt or taken our help. We were devastated and shocked and have since learned that thousands of families had the same experience. None of his friends, family, or his coaches knew that he was struggling with depression. My name is Elliot Kallen, and I am the President and Founder of A Brighter Day Charity. In honor of Jake, we began this charity six years ago by creating resources for teens and parents on stress and depression to stop teen suicide. We have now grown to become a charity that has impacted tens of thousands of families. Thousands are viewing our resources every month. We have established support programs and even offer college scholarships. Teen suicide has become a major problem in this country and is now the 2nd leading cause of death among teens. We are experts in teen depression and don’t want other parents to experience this devastation. I will share ideas that will make a huge difference in the lives of teens and their parents.” Teen mental health is a real concern to many and it will take all of us to support our teens through these years. Ep 322322. Dr. Dain Heer: From Chiropractic To Beyond, In Supporting People’s Healing And Being Your Extraordinary Self
Trigger warning: In today’s show our guest shares he was close to ending his life at one point. Please reach out to 13 11 14 (Australia) or 1-800-985-5990 USA Crisis Line or your local helpline if you need support, and this show also just may help but is in no way intended to treat, heal or diagnose any conditions. Hugs to you if right now is hard. Dr Dain Heer joins me today, after I recently had an Access Bars session that was so blissful and settling it led me to dig around a bit more and see who talks about it/ works with it and teaches it. It’s been a while since I’ve done a show that explores brain re-wiring techniques and ditching heavy stories that we hold as truth and towards the end of the show we do a live exploration of me + mould and while I can’t say it was a moment of change in my life, I can say I have just realised as I type this, I haven’t been sick from the house inspections we did the past two weekends which both had extensive water damage, so that’s interesting to me for sure - Dain made me realise that saying “the only way out is through” wasn‘t useful and that I have absolutely taken on board. We talk about: The problem with handing all our answers over to external sources. The hope that can be found in our darkest moments. How we can get on with celebrating ourselves - all of ourselves and we discuss neurodivergence and both having ADHD.How the desire to serve others can start one way and morph into more once you start practising and seeing limitations/further tools to put in one’s kit. The power of asking “Who does this belong to?” about every thought and feeling you have for 3 days. How we can separate what we *think* we need to change, from what we actually want to change. Dain shares this gold “What’s true for you will always make you lighter” to help us tune into . Dr Vincent Pedre is the kind of doctor you want in your corner - kind, compassionate, big picture thinking and on today’s show we are deep diving into gut health - if you missed the show we did a few years back it has aged well and you might want to double down with both eps. This time round we talk about his new book, The Gut Smart Protocol, but within the show so much gold as well: The huge amount of diagnoses that can be traced back to gut health and yet often aren’tThe way we all might need to be coming into dietary changes differently depending on where we’re at (ie high histamine = don’t hit those fermented foods just yet!) and how to know what mix is best for your individual situation. Ep 320320. Dr. James Khong, 81, on the key principles to thriving in an anxious world
Dr James Khong has been a GP for 5 decades and at age 81, has wonderful wisdom to share with us in this week’s show. The solution to the ‘Stress Pandemic,’ as James calls these times, is a combination of Eastern and Western medicine, as well as following his Pillars of Health and reducing stress. I know you’ll love his calm reasoned and overwhelm-free approach in this show. James outlines his philosophy of wellness in his new book Pandemic Stress, Reflections of Thriving in an Anxious world - a book her wrote as a way to leave a legacy from his career and life. In over fifty years as a surgical registrar, emergency medicine specialist, innovative GP and medical consultant to the Australian Ballet, film and television industry, James Khong has had a front row seat of the medical ‘industry,’ and the view makes him sick. Ironically, it was a near-death-experience twenty years ago, which led to James’ epiphany about changing the status quo medical model. He started to combine traditional Chinese/Western/Functional medicine, which look for causes to illness, rather than just addressing the symptoms. James also introduced meditation and breathing exercises for stress reduction. Ep 319319. Building a holistic support picture for ADHD with Dr James Greenblatt
ADHD - Traditionally thought of as a little-boy mental health picture is fast becoming recognised as something that many of us have been living with and creating coping mechanisms around, without being given the recognition of being neurodivergent - I am one such person diagnosed at the ripe old age of 47 - today’s show while focused primarily on children as Dr James Greenblatt’s work is focused there, it is very much a show for anyone who works with, lives with, cares for, teaches or loves anyone who either has a formal diagnosis or who you simply think “what is up with them!?” often about what they forget, their busy-ness, their inability to follow up or get a ‘simple’ thing done, their tapping their foot while you try to talk about something super important or perhaps their ‘too much’ ness sometimes. The shame that many people with ADHD feel for not being able to be like everyone wants or needs them to is really something that need not exist if we embrace diversity and difference and help each human find the space to thrive within our beautiful human race. I hope you enjoy this show as much as I did as we explore the many support tools on offer, the lack of judgement around stimulant medication, the importance of tools tips and tricks to bring out one’s best and the critical importance of removing food from the landscape that sabotages the neurodivergent brain more and faster than anything - ultra-processed food! You can head to the show notes for more details over at lowtoxlife.com/podcast Today’s guest James Greenblatt, MD is a clinical pioneer, speaker, and health system leader. Dr. Greenblatt is recognized as an authority on improving mental health outcomes with nutritional medicine. Dr. Greenblatt served for 19 years as Chief Medical Officer for Walden Behavioral Health. Disillusioned by what traditional psychology had to offer overweight and/or food obsessed individuals, Dr. Livingston spent several decades researching the nature of bingeing and overeating via work with his own patients AND a self-funded research program with more than 40,000 participants. Most important, however, was his own personal journey out of obesity and food prison to a normal, healthy weight and a much more lighthearted relationship with food. His work centres around self-exploration, kindness and achieving food freedom if you live a life lured by food constantly without a framework for breaking free. In today’s show we explore a world where we ‘never binge again’. Is it possible? Glenn believes wholeheartedly YES. Why is it that we knowingly do things that we know aren’t good for us? How can some people make changes and stick to them and you find it super hard? Do you find yourself boredom eating? Reaching for food repeatedly before meals? Finding you eat one thing that you know is less than ideal for health only to then do it more and more ‘because what the hey, you’re not perfect now so this is you’. xxx. Ep 317317. Dr Ali Walker - A doctor of group dynamics can teach us about who we click and clash with
What is an ex-criminal lawyer doing on the podcast you ask? Well, Dr Ali Walker wasn’t satisfied in that line of work and went on to study executive coaching and obtain a PhD in group dynamics. She wants all of us to have a framework and literacy around our own personality, energy, communication style and how we can contribute to group dynamics with our eyes wide open as well as understanding others better - at work, in our families in leadership. You’ll learn about high, mid and low-frequency types, as well as high, mid and low-intensity types and how we are all one of each in different combinations. You’ll even see Ali profile me live and absolutely nail my frequency and intensity combo type. Very cool. Knowing ourselves and being able to spot other people’s types helps us understand each other rather than have unnecessary misunderstandings and friction - Ali will help you take things way less personally about other people’s behaviour. Her new book “Click or Clash” is worth a read if you found today’s show interesting and want to go deeper. Profound work making relationships and group dynamics profoundly simpler! Ep 316316. Erin Lovell Verinder: Herbal Medicine And Detoxification - A holistic approach.
When we think detoxification these days, we often think quite mechanically about purging, killing things (mould/parasites), intensive programs, expensive labs et al, and while there is a time and place for all of it and it’s a bio-individual need, nutritionist and herbal medicine practitioner Erin Lovell Verinder wants us to explore what a day by day, bit by bit approach looks like by exploring the magnificent plants that help us detoxify and eliminate every day as well as the ways in which we might need to up the ante from time to time. We discuss her 3 x desert Island plants as a herbalist, how important the mindset around health is, the different ways in which we can become empowered by plants-as-medicine and incorporate them safely into our day to day. Ep 314314. Colleen Ryan-Hensley on “binging sober” - drawing ourselves to a place of health and healing by moving through what’s difficult.
This show takes a look at sobriety in a powerful new way where absolutes work for some and are needed, Colleen Ryan Hensley shares an additional perspective: What if we binged on sobriety the way we binged on all the things that take us away from feeling all the feelings of life and moving through it wholly awake and more empowered? Colleen is a 10-year Navy veteran, candidate for Certified Mental Performance Coach with the Association for Applied Sport Psychology and founder of https://colleenryanhensley.com/ which I encourage you to connect with if today’s conversation resonates. She holds an advanced degree in performance psychology and spent 5-years with the team of cutting-edge researchers and clinicians at the University of Texas at Dallas’ Center for BrainHealth teaching High-Performance Cognitive Training to military veterans and their spouses and caregivers, active duty military, and first responders around the country. There are a lot of things we do to numb ourselves in life and today we explore how it looks and what we might stand to gain by widening the gaps between those numbing tools being in use, and the times when we’re “binging sober” as Colleen puts it. A wonderful show to encourage introspection as we close out a year and look to the next. Thanks for being here as a brilliant member of our podcast-listening community. Ep 313313. Bruce Scott on the power of bodywork.
We often don’t know just how good we are designed to feel and in today’s show, I interview Bruce Scott, the Body Magician, who works hard to help people feel that. Bodywork is a way through human touch and guidance, to help us nourish our nervous systems and re-write the programming of our physical and mental state as a result - a powerful tool because we are an equal part of the process rather than having something ’done’ to us and in a world where health is so often externalised, bodywork calls on us to come home and explore. How did Bruce come to do this work? It’s a powerful story in itself. At ten years of age, Bruce became sick with viral meningitis and went from being an elite gymnast to living in a dark room unable to go outside, even to school. Extensive treatments with Western medicine were not helping and by thirteen, Bruce had arthritis in every joint in his body. He started learning tai chi and receiving a Swedish remedial massage once a week. Within six months, he was fully recovered and could play sports outdoors, run for miles and started boxing.Bruce, aka The Body Magician, says the combination of movement, breathing and massage transformed his life and now he is using it to transform the lives of others. Known as BODYWORK, Bruce's work is a therapeutic practice combining massage, assisted stretching and breath-work to heal the body.He is on a mission to support the body’s ability to heal, and helps clients find energy, vitality, creativity and clarity through deep relaxation. Bruce works with everyone from athletes to CEO’s, mums and dads, entertainers, artists, authors and more. He helps people dealing with anxiety, depression, stress, insomnia, burnout, chronic pain, chronic fatigue, hormonal challenges, migraines, PTSD, pregnancy, pre and post operative care and mor and I’m delighted to bring you this conversation that I had with Bruce on the show as 2022 comes to an end. Ep 312312. Operation Crayweed - A regenerative marine ecology project en route to success, with Adriana Verges
This week I am thrilled to present you with an example of hope and progress in the regeneration space. With the right tools, funding and action we can rebuild the health of our planet and Professor Adriana Verges and her team are showing us the way with Operation Crayweed on the coast of Sydney, Australia - I’m so inspired to bring you this story because it shows a path of success and once we believe we can be successful in regeneration efforts, we see the evidence and positive effects, we then have more conviction and motivation and the ripple effects are in motion. Professor Vergés’s research focuses on the ecology and conservation of coastal marine habitats. In particular, her team investigates the ecological impacts of climate change in our oceans and develops hands-on restoration solutions to protect and conserve marine ecosystems including seagrass meadows, kelp forests and coral reefs. Ep 311311. Dr Lucas Tims on cancer - root causes, prevention and how we can broaden our treatment options for improved patient experience.
This week continuing our health series, I interview Dr Lucas Tims, medical director of the Riordon Clinic, Kansas, USA. Cancer through the naturopathic doctor lens gives a broader set of options to explore to not only treat the patient, but to change the terrain and make the body less hospitable to cancer now and into the future - a key piece of the treatment and healing puzzle sadly missing in conventional care which is “let’s try to kill and zap it and hope it doesn’t return or grow’. It’s inspiring to know Dr Lucas and other physicians like him are out there providing this holistic care and I hope it’s a helpful show for you, friends and any family that might need it right now. Ep 310310. FROM SCRATCH: Adventures in Hunting, Fishing, and Foraging on a Fragile Planet, with David Moscow
What does “From Scratch” cooking mean to you? In modern times it’s come to mean making food at home, instead of ordering take-out or packaged snacks. Today, we take “from scratch” to it’s true meaning which is hunting, gathering, fishing and then preparing the food, exploring how that looks around the world, through the work of film maker and story teller, David Moscow. David Moscow is the creator, executive producer, and host of From Scratch and co-author of a book by the same name. He made his feature film debut at age thirteen in Big, starring as the young Tom Hanks; years later, he starred with Christian Bale in Newsies. He has appeared in dozens of films, television shows, and theater productions over a thirty-five year career. Most recently, David founded the production company UnLTD Pictures. He has executive produced more than twenty feature films and he also develops mixed-income sustainably green apartment buildings - in his spare time! Ep 309309. Endometriosis with Alexandra Middleton, naturopath.
Are you or someone you know experiencing heavy, painful periods or suspecting/diagnosed with endometriosis? Today’s guest, Alexandra Middleton received so little care in her early journey that she quit investment banking and studied naturopathy to better understand and support her disease and then work to support other women in clinical practice. Endometriosis has been vastly underdiagnosed with hundreds and thousands of women complaining of debilitating symptoms and pain with nothing more than a suggestion of a pain killer and rest. In today’s show we discuss what’s at play, what some of the root causes can be that contribute to the development and progression of endometriosis, and how looking after ourselves and our environment is key as we heal and recover - with or without surgical intervention. Please share it far and wide with those who might benefit from the support and guidance. Ep 308308. Jeff Lieberman: From mess to message: How to support our teens into adulthood with “Sleepawake”
Did you feel connected, supported and ready as you headed into adulthood? Did you know yourself? Well Jeff Lieberman didn’t and had a really tough time of teen life and early adulthood, despite from the outside looking like an all-star student and human with 4 university degrees, a successful large-scale art business and hosting a show on the History Channel. Jeff jokes that he learned quantum mechanics before learning about his emotions but is quick to point out the tragedy of this. He marvels at the fact that we can measure the external universe to 10-decimal accuracy, but most of us don’t learn about our insides: our emotions, what leads to flourishing, how to take great care of ourselves. Years of personal exploration transformed him, leading to a determination to not have the road to joy be difficult for others to find. He has spent the last 15 years training in meditation, personal development, and group dynamics for well being, facilitating high school students through a 3-week intensive and adults through an 18-month program. His new camp Sleepawake has had incredible results and in today’s show you’ll get a window into just how much we can do now, and for our young adults and teens, to steer a happier, healthier course as connected ,purposeful individuals and communities. Ep 307307. Hannah Churton - Food waste solutions from the mindset, to the practicalities of worm farming and compost
This week is all about taking action on food waste - which, if it was a country it would be the 3rd largest emitter behind China and the USA - It’s a BIG deal and instead we seem to keep focusing on what’s on the plate instead of what’s in the BIN! Hannah Churton literally lives to make people feel confident about bringing worm farming or composting solutions into your life and in this show we discuss best options for a range of home styles - including apartments without balconies - and we also discuss barriers to entry, hiccups when getting started and common trouble shoots and what to do. Ep 306306. Julia Edgely: Broadening your understanding of homeopathy for viral and bacterial infections.
Julia Edgely joined us on the show recently to dive into the world of homeopathy, its history, the theory, the significance of different strengths of remedies and the ways homeopathy can be a big player in your life. Today’s show is actually a Low Tox Club member masterclass, which we run each month for our members, that - because it was just so useful and powerful when it comes to viral and bacterial infections - I felt compelled for everyone who listens to the show to get access to it as well, as well as giving you a window into what our masterclasses are like. In today’s show, we dive into the details of viral and bacterial infections and what remedies you need in your kit to deal with the onset and treatment of the infection at hand - we even go into the significance of different presentations of SNOT and what it tells us/what remedy we might need. We also cover red flags for when doctor/emergency care is warranted. It’s so useful and I’ve already expanded my homeopathic kit accordingly - I know you will too. Ep 304304. Alice Zaslavsky: The Joy of Better Cooking
Do you dislike cooking? What if a few simple tips, tricks, utensil hacks or simple mindset shifts could make your experience in the kitchen altogether more enjoyable and cost you less time and money in the process of getting food on the table? Today’s show will help as I have this uplifting conversation with Alice Zaslavsky about the power of the salad spinner (I’m not joking - listen and believe!) and so much more. If we can help just one person out there go ‘yay, what to cook tonight, I’ll have a rummage’ then it’s job done. Her new book “The Joy of Cooking” is an indispensable kitchen tool and we dive into a few highlights from it throughout the show. In the space of a decade, Alice Zaslavsky has gone from high-school Humanities and English teacher to one of the country’s most authoritative and exciting media stars and taste-makers, with an internationally award-winning and bestselling cookbook “In Praise of Veg”. Ep 303303. Corbin Halliday and Alexx Stuart Share their Experiences Working Through Mould Illness/CIRS
On this show, I have a conversation about what it feels like to have a little-understood and vastly under-supported illness due to mould toxicity and I do that with a fellow Aussie who’s been through it as well, Corbin. We are super open about what it’s been like along the way - the good, the bad, the ugly, the silver linings and the constant challenges. We don’t hold back. When Aussie, Corbin Halliday – working as a hairdresser at the time - was diagnosed with Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS), the result of unwitting exposure to mycotoxins from black mould, he was suffering from serious health complications such as chronic migraines, high blood pressure and nerve pains. After being diagnosed with CIRS, Corbin was motivated to adopt a lifestyle free of chemicals, including toxic-free skincare. He researched all of the products he was using and realised there was a gap in the market for organic and toxic-free skincare and self-tanning products – hence Three Warriors was born, which has developed into a multi-million $ Aussie brand coveted by celebrities and lots of people in the low tox community. Ep 302302. Naturopathic Support in Oncology with Carla Wrenn

We talk about how she came to specialise in cancer, what it is like to establish a collaborative spirit with Oncologists, how a patient can feel empowered in the process of making changes and navigating options and the importance of mind/body practices. We discuss some of the research that shows some things to be very supportive for treatment, side effects and quality of life, as well as different dietary approaches suiting different cancers. It’s fascinating and hopeful and I hope you or a loved one finds it helpful if this is something you’re working through right now. Ep 301301. Julia Edgely - The power of homeopathy
Curious to know more about homeopathy works? In today’s show, we dive right in with Julia Edgely. We focus on history, practice and a couple of simple home remedies we can work with ourselves, as well as knowing red flag signs of when you need professional help or emergency physician care. I also ask her what her desert Island remedy is and why - it’s a goodie and I’ve already ordered it! Julia Edgely is an internationally practising and licensed homeopath. She treats a very wide range of patients but in certain cases, she saw a distinct pattern. Overuse of unnecessary antibiotics leads to pathologies sometimes years down the road. This led her to develop her signature method, The ABC Method which has helped hundreds of individuals and families eliminate unnecessary antibiotics use. Ep 299299. Building a Healthy Home from the ground up with Andy Pace
Andy Pace, Healthy Home Concierge and Founder of The Green Design Center, is back already. Our first show together was fantastic, looking at some of the disconnects between choosing building styles and materials and their impact on human health - seems to be we’re building for a very narrow success metric of energy saving while ignoring indoor humidity and mould growth potential. Add to that sloppier and more lax building codes in many places around the world where waterproofing isn’t done properly or wooden frames are filled over while still wet, and there are disasters waiting to happen - sometimes within just a year or two of the build being completed. But what if we could learn, step by step from the location to the ground and up, every facet of what makes a healthy home? Well, in today’s show we have a red hot go at doing just that. This show, while being a dream for someone considering building their home, is brilliant for renters and owners alike with the bounty of information Andy provides us in this show - we become more literate at spotting pitfalls before living in them! Ep 298298. The Thyroid Debacle with Dr Eric Balcavage & Dr Kelly Halderman
Thyroid struggles? This show is where you need to be then for the next 70 minutes. I am thrilled to have back on the show Dr Eric Balcavage, a relentless crusader in thyroid health education and long-term root-causes-based healing. He is one of the duo that has written a new book called The Thyroid Debacle, the co-author also being a past show guest, Dr Kelly Halderman. Kelly Halderman, a conventionally trained and practised physician was hit by two chronic health conditions, one being MS and through her trusting that something more could be done than what she was being told was her lot in life, discovered functional medicine and hasn’t looked back. Eric, seeing sick patient after patient that no amount of spinal adjustments could support for long-term healing in his chiropractic practice felt the same. And so, thanks to these two Drs broadening their understanding of what helps humans achieve homeostasis and lasting improved health, and practising with and educating thousands around the world, we have a powerhouse tackling a thyroid-illness epidemic and having read the book myself I can honestly say I know just how impactful it will be for people to read it and practice what they learn from its pages. Today isn’t all about the book though, as we explore thyroid testing, what gaps there are in current treatments, how you can be on meds and still feel awful and so much more. Ep 297297. Grace Niu - A deeper dive into Feng Shui for health
This week I have Grace Nui back on the show to dive deeper into Feng Shui and Eastern principles of wellbeing. On an 80minute exploration we dive into the idea that our body is our bodyguard, and how sometimes constant vigilance is an invitation to explore a deeper need for healing. We also talk about chronic presentations, the home, bust myths that everything needs to be a ‘certain facing’ direction for a happy, wealthy, healthy life and look at how we’re being impacted by the stages the world are in and moving to right now, energetically. It’s a fascinating deep dive and show that really helps us make sense of things on not just an individual level but as a collective in the world right now. Ep 296296. Long Covid: What we know is helping, with Naturopath, Carla Wrenn
Long Covid. Do you or someone you know still have covid after effects lingering on to varying degrees? Today’s show is for you. With this amount of people experiencing issues - some debilitating - it’s impossible for us to ignore anything that’s proving to be helpful, regardless of our area of training or thinking and I believe it’s holistic health’s time to shine as a true parter to crisis care and come to the rescue. Many of us who’ve had mosquito-borne viruses, biotoxin poisoning, tick borne illness and other often chronic and complicated multi-system conditions are no stranger to long lasting effects of certain exposures and infections. Never in our lifetime though, have hundreds of millions of people caught a virus within the time frame of a couple of years, with the therefore much higher influx within a period of time, of people chronically affected in the aftermath, and so, I have hope that the light will be shone for all who’ve experienced chronic post-viral/exposure issues for decades with little support. Us chronic peeps have often eventually - if privileged enough with the access and means - been driven to explore eastern medicine, naturopathy, chiropractic, homeopathy and more to find ways to improve symptoms and heal, when labs return more or less ‘normal’ and conventional drugs don’t work so we know how many tools can be in the ‘get well kit’ and I’d dearly love for everyone to know how many tools can be in your kit if you do have long covid - don’t lose hope. Many conventional doctors are so heavily regulated that they can’t discuss other options even if you want to so there’s a real opportunity for partnership between types of health professionals here. I have brought us the wonderful Naturopath, Carla Wrenn, specialised in chronic illness and oncology, to discuss the research at the forefront of long covid in the ‘out of the box’ treatment world of holistic healing and nutraceutical support. This show is so needed and I feel grateful to be able to get this information out to the many experiencing issues and debilitating symptoms. Share it far and wide. Ep 295295. What makes a healthy building? The building, the materials, the maintenance - it all matters, with Andrew Pace
Care about the health of your home’s indoor air? Sensitive to a variety of chemicals and need to look at what’s happening in your home? We think about home fragrance, mold and our cleaning products but how about how long a kitchen cabinet takes to off-gas or just how low VOC that paint really is- Ah, it never ends, does it? This week to help us NOT freak out about building materials and get so many valuable tips about choosing a home if you’re renting through to choosing materials if you’re building or renovating, Andy Pace is the perfect guide through it all. Ep 294294. The keys to a healthy pelvic floor with Dr. Danielle Bailey
When you think ‘Pelvic floor’ most people either think of women who’ve just given birth or elderly people, but having an unstable pelvic floor can affect us all - that’s including men, so I’ve invited a wonderful physical therapist, Dr Danielle Bailey, who helps thousands in her practice and online, get their pelvic floor in shape and transform all sorts of symptoms that aren’t just about peeing when you don’t want to - although that part is, of course, the biggest reason to get excited - even laugh and cry or sneeze, and be relaxed about it. Right? Danielle is a physical therapist and functional medicine practitioner in Plano Texas, USA, specializing in pelvic floor physical therapy. She supports women and men who experience pelvic floor dysfunction, such as urinary leakage, tailbone pain, frequent restroom breaks, pain with intercourse, and constipation. I have invited Helena back, given it’s just been World Re-Localisation-Day, to discuss the practicality, possibility and benefits of localising economies, and to tackle the big topics today such as polarisation as a profit-making reality that keeps us from holding big industry accountable and changing the system that’s causing further and further economic divide and despair world wide - it’s a show to make you THINK rather than perpetuate the ‘what team are you on’ arguments we all seem forced into today. Polarisation is the enemy of true progress and today’s show focuses on the benefits of what true progress are. Can’t wait to hear what you think. Ep 291291. Dr. Nicole Beurkens - Raising kids in 2022 to be healthy, and mentally resilient and why grey-area thinking matters.
What are some of the biggest factors that affect the health of our children today? How is growing up in a polarised black and white world affecting our kids? What happens to our kids if they are raised in a way that doesn’t factor in an understanding of differences in people, politics and life choices? Today I invite Dr Nicole Beurkens, a triple advance degreed psychologist, educator and nutritionist to help us unpack raising kids in today’s ever polarised world and how we can support them to investigate the complexity of various global and local issues as well as how that feeds into greater resilience and peace. We also discuss some of the biggest things that move the needle for children’s health. It’s a powerful show and I hope you appreciate it as much as I did. Ep 290290. Bill Giles on finding your signature diet (and how that in turn supports your immune system)
In the coming weeks we’re going to be looking at the Immune System with a few practitioners and specialists in this space - Dr Gary Kaplan’s show from last month was wonderful to kick things off. Today, I interview Bill Giles, Immunobiologist, Hypnotherapist, Yoga Teacher and more, with over 3 decades of clinical experience supporting and optimising people’s immune function. Bill was a pioneer advocating for grain-free diets in the early 90s, co founding the world’s first grain-free bakery and we talk about grains in today’s episode. We explore different foods and their effects on the immune system, from plants to animal proteins, fats and fish. We look at why fructose is such a harmful sugar but not necessarily to all people and look at how one might go about finding their signature diet for optimal health and immune function. It’s a fascinating show that has me wanting to ask more questions, so Bill will be a masterclass guest in our member’s club which you can join here: https://www.lowtoxlife.com/the-low-tox-club/ and be a part of or catch the replay and the many other member-only resources we share, there. Ep 289289. Shanya Suppasiritad - On how fashion can be exciting AND sustainable.
This week I interview Shanya Suppasiritad, a serial entrepreneur, recipient of the first TWOGOOD grant and founder of RNTR. Imagine if you could rent your favourite brands in capsule collections to wear for 2 weeks or 4 and then you returned them or the next person to enjoy and for them to find their way into a closed-loop recycling system at the end of their life, to become new clothes. This is what RNTR makes possible and I know you’ll enjoy learning more about fashion, textiles, and slowing fast fashion down while creating new jobs… it’s got a little of everything if you’re a fan of clothes but want to do better by the planet in the process. Ep 288288. Water Damage, ERMI testing, and all things mould with Michael Rubino, the Mold Medic
This week we are talking about water-damaged buildings, mould, ERMI testing, remediation and what some of the tell tale signs are for water damage as well as some of the best ways to build to avoid it. My expert joining me on the show is Michael Robino, President of All American Restoration and a mold remediator with much experience working with families severely affected by mold. Michael's passion extends beyond remediating homes, as he has now put the wheels in motion advocating for the right to clean air and a tightening up of building codes, materials used and waterproofing techniques to ensure healthier homes in the future and a greater level of rights for people experiencing issues now. On today's show, Michael also takes us through 2 of my past ERMI test results, pointing out various aspects of the reports that show alarm bells for mold-sensitive people living there. If you want to watch that part of it, I've included it as a video section over in the show notes. I hope this show supports you if water damage has been something you're grappling with and if you want more on mould, head to the show notes over at lowtoxlife.com/podcast and click on today's show, to find a post link where I've listed all of the resources we've shared over the years on mold, mold illness, water damage and healing.
