Welcome to episode 231 of the Löw Tide Böyz - A Swimrun Podcast! We’ve got a great one for everyone this week. We’re stoked to be racing Quest Racing’s Bellingham Swimrun this weekend. (Registration is still open so if you’re waiting until the last minute, now is your time to shine.) We also have different coaches for the first time in a long time. Despite all that, stoke level is sky high!ShoutoutOur shoutout this week goes out to all of our supporters on Patreon. Ep 224Swimrun Cape Cod Course Preview

Welcome to episode 224 of the Löw Tide Böyz - A Swimrun Podcast! We've got a great course preview for everyone this week. Joining us from Cape Cod to talk about Swimrun Cape Cod are New England Endurance Events Race Directors Kathleen Wheeler and Andy Scherding. This event is taking place on Sept. 21st in Wellfleet, Massachusetts and it’s going to be awesome! You don’t have to take our word for it, just listen to our conversation with Kathleen and Andy later in the show!Special welcome for anyone that is new to the show and the sport of Swimrun. We think that we’ll have a bunch of folks that will be registered for Swimrun Cape Cod so we wanted to encourage everyone to head over to our website where we have a ton of resources to help new Swimrunners get to the start line feeling prepared and stoked for the adventure. You can also DM or email us anytime with your questions. But first…This episode is brought to you by our friends at FORM Swim. They recently released their new Smart Swim 2 goggles and these things are a game changer! Training UpdateTraining for ÖTILLÖ Whistler has begun. We’re about 100 days out from the big day and stoke levels are reasonably high already! Lots of swimming and running in various permutations over the next few months. #LFGShoutout/Feats of Endurance ComboWe’re doing a combo shoutout this week to all of our Swimrun and Swimrun-adjacent friends who ran the 128th Edition of the Boston Marathon this past Monday. We might have missed some of you but big shoutouts to Sarah Monk, Keith Lindquist, Kanoa King, Phil Saenkov, Lily Kriv, and Danny “Da Monsta” Divinov. Bit blanket shoutout to everyone else that towed the line.Make sure to sign up for our LTBz Strava Club and join Swimrunners from around the world as they train for stuff.Show BusinessWe’re going to be doing an AMA-style show in the next few weeks so DM/email/messenger pigeon us with all your burning Swimrun questions. If we don’t know the answer, don’t worry because we probably know who does.Swimrun Cape CodIt was great to chat with Kathleen and Andy. We have been in contact with them since they announced the race last year and I was literally in Boston last year the day before what was supposed to have been the inaugural edition of the race when it was canceled because of BLEEPING Hurricane Lee. (Rest assured that Andy and Kathleen had insured the race so every participant that wanted one, got full reimbursement of the registration fee.) That did not deter them from keeping it on their robust race calendar and, at time of this podcast’s release, have virtually sold out both distance offerings. In this conversation we get the entire story of how a Swimrun race was born and the labor of love that it took to create an event that is at once uniquely New England and very much a Swimrunners dream course.Registration might be sold out but if not, we highly encourage you to not wait and sign up for Swimrun Cape Cod.And as a bonus, the race was recently featured in Outside Magazine. Ep 222Brian Johns, Head of Coaching Science at FORM Swim

Welcome to episode 222 of the Löw Tide Böyz - A Swimrun Podcast! We’re super stoked for this week’s episode for a couple of reasons. First, we survived April Fool’s Day. Second, FORM Swim is sponsoring the show all month long. And last, but not least, we have 3x Olympian and Head of Coaching Science at FORM Swim, Brian Johns on the show this week to talk about all about the Smart Goggle. But first…This episode is sponsored by FORM Swim. Smart Swim 2 google features AR goggle based display that can show 9 real-time metrics including Pace, Stroke Rate, Stroke Count, Distance Per Stroke (DPS), Splits, Time, Distance, Calories, and Heart Rate● Directional headings in open-water● HeadCoach Metrics, including head pitch, head roll, time to neutral, interval and setpacing.Training UpdateApril 15th is the totally arbitrary day that we will begin training for ÖTILLÖ Whistler. Almost time to start busting the Swimrun rust! Almost.ShoutoutThis week’s shoutout goes to Gerry Rodrigues of Tower26. He introduced us to the Smart Goggles way back in Episode 203 and, since whenever Gerry makes a recommendation we listen, we got them for our pool swimming. The rest is history! Feats of EnduranceThis week’s award goes to friend of the show (and friend of Aquatic Park in San Francisco) Erika G. She recently swam from Candlestick to Aquatic Park. A cool 9ish mile swim (16,000yds) in an even cooler 2 hours and 25ish minutes. A worthy feat indeed!Make sure to sign up for our LTBz Strava Club and join Swimrunners from around the world as they train for stuff.Show BusinessSwimrun season is almost here! Joining us from Stockholm is our friend Henrik Forssell, a.k.a., The Swimrun Pappa. It was great to have him on the podcast to chat about all things Swimrun and his remarkable Swimrun streak. But first…Training UpdateTraining for ÖTILLÖ Whistler will begin in earnest in about a month but until then we’re swimming, running, and hitting the gym in regular intervals. ShoutoutThis week’s shout out goes out to our friend Hugh Bowman. We’ve got a dope carbon fiber paddle episode and he’s “a bit obsessed” with this particular piece of Swimrun kit and has been testing all the paddles on the market and we’re bringing him on for his special report! Stay tuned for that.Feats of EnduranceThis week’s winner is not in our Strava Club (yet?) but her accomplishment is more than worthy of mentioning. On Friday, March 22, Jasmin Paris, the 40-year-old British runner finished the Barkley Marathon, a grueling 100 mile race (with over 60,000’ of climbing) with only 90 seconds to spare within the 60-hour time limit. Ep 213Team Feel The Byrn

Welcome to episode 213 of the Löw Tide Böyz - A Swimrun Podcast! In this episode we are kicking off our fourth annual Partners Month where we feature one of our favorite parts of Swimrun: the partner aspect. Kicking things off this year is the father and son duo of Team Feel The Byrn, A.K.A. Axel and Gordo Byrn. If the name Gordo sounds familiar, well it should! We spoke with Gordo back in Episode 138 and he is a wealth of knowledge on all things endurance training…and parenting. This was an awesome conversation and we can wait to share it with all of you.But first…Brief History of LTBz’s Partners MonthIn early 2021, we were sitting in Studio G talking about content when one of us came up with the idea to feature partners for Valentine’s Day. One thing led to another and Partners Month was born. (Friendly reminder: if you’re a solo Swimrunner, that’s cool too!)In that first year, we featured Team Max Mockermann, The Adorkables, The Monks, and did a Swimrun 201 show on Team Tactics. In 2022, we featured Team Mr. and Mrs. B, The Kancho Boyz, a Swimrun 101 show on Partners (Redux), and our most downloaded show ever, Team Kraken Swimrun.Last year we interviewed Team Strömgren, Team Monkey Sea Monkey Run, Team Landshark, and shared a masterclass on effective teamwork with Brad Stulberg. This year we have a bunch of great interviews lined up to get you in the spirit for another great year of Swimrunning! ShoutoutOur shoutout this week goes to our newest Patron on Patreon, James N. Thank you so much for your support and we look forward to seeing you at the races!Feats of EnduranceThis week’s award goes to our friend Lucas Desmond. He completed his first World Loppet at the Marcialonga 51 over the weekend. Have no idea what we are talking about? Marcialonga is 70km cross country ski race in Moena Italy. In this conversation we talked about their race resume, how they train for Swimrun, got a steady stream of knowledge bombs on how to raise an active family, and so much more. Ep 211We Swimrun Founder Mike Alexander

Welcome to episode 211 of the Löw Tide Böyz - A Swimrun Podcast! In this episode, we head across the pond to Wales for a proper chin wag with We Swimrun Founder, Mike Alexander. We met Mike in Sweden last year and hit it off right away while engaged in an exchange of laurels (We swim caps for LTBz buffs). We knew that we wanted to get him on the show and although it took us almost 4 months to make it happen…make it happen we did! This was a great chat and we can’t wait to share it with all of you.But first…Training UpdateWe’re at the “building consistency” stage of training and trying to be better at incorporating strength work earlier in the year.ShoutoutThis week we’re shouting out our newest Patron on Patreon: Tim S. As far as we can tell he’s our first supporter from Denmark and we’re here for it! Thank you so much for the support Tim!Feats of EnduranceThis week’s award goes to the California Swimrun folks of Andy, Phil, and crew. A They lined up for Elevation Culture’s SD50 Trail Runs over the weekend and all had stellar days out on the trails.Make sure to sign up for our LTBz Strava Club and join Swimrunners from around the world as they train for stuff. This Week in SwimrunWe have so many updates this week! Let’s get right to it.After taking a year off, registration for Swimrun NC is open and this year’s race date will be October 13. We’re already registered for this event and can’t wait to be back at Hanging Rock State Park in North Carolina. (We’re also excited to go back to Carolina Zip Lines for some pre-race fun!)New Podcast Alert! (Queue the air horn!) At long last there is another Swimrun podcast coming online soon. The Swimrun Show recently dropped their trailer on Spotify and will be hosted by today’s guest, Mike Alexander from We Swimrun.New Race Alert! The Mudskipper Swimrun Challenge is taking place at Deam Lake, Indiana on May 12th and is offering a “Mini” 10 mile and a “Classic” 18 mile distance options along with open water swims and a trail 5km run. The event looks like fun and yay! more Swimrun events! In ÖTILLÖ news, there are three key updates to fill everyone in. First, ÖTILLÖ announced their merit race list for 2024. Notably absent are any merit races in North America. This is not entirely surprising given the stacked ÖTILLÖ USA race calendar for 2024 but still a bummer for long time local events Swimrun Lake James and Swimrun NC that used to be part of the program. (LTBz Public Service Announcement: Just want to remind everyone that there are many hero journeys in the sport of Swimrun and qualifying and racing the World Championship is just one of many. We highly encourage everyone to continue to support local, grass-roots events to help grow the base of the sport.)Second, ÖTILLÖ announced a new event in North America: ÖTILLÖ Whistler. You might remember that at around this time last year we were super stoked about Swimrun Whistler announcing their new event, only to see it postponed a month or so later. We’ll it’s back and we’re here for it! ÖTILLÖ Whistler will take place on Sunday, July 7th and will offer Experience, Sprint and World Series Distance options. Finally, registration is open for all 2024 ÖTILLÖ USA events. This is a big year for Swimrun in North America and we hope to see you out at the races!A Proper Chin Wag with Mike AlexanderIt was really great to chat with Mike. His passion for Swimrun is infectious and he gave us a tour of We Swimrun’s events, what he thinks the future looks like for Swimrunning in the U.K., and so much more. Needless to say it was a proper chin wag. We know that you’ll love this conversation as much as we did.Enjoy!~~~That’s it for this week’s show. Ep 201How to Qualify for ÖTILLÖ, The Swimrun World Championship

Welcome to episode 201 of the Löw Tide Böyz - A Swimrun Podcast! In this episode we are discussing how to qualify for ÖTILLÖ, The Swimrun World Championship since the advent of their new ranking system. We’ve gotten a bunch of questions from our listeners about how to get to the start line so we’re breaking down all the ways to qualify for the race that started it all.Things that are the same as in year’s past:Registration window from January 1st through the 25th.A total of 160 team spots availableAll podium teams from ÖTILLÖ, The Swimrun World Championship from the previous year (9 spots) (Only for the same team constellation as on the podium)Race Directors choice (10 spots) that are used at the Race Director’s discretion throughout the year for sponsors, media and special circumstances.Things that are a different/new:There is no longer going to be Direct qualification for the World Championship. (Used to be that podium finishers at World Series events would get slots. That is no more.)The Swimrun Ranking system has been revamped and “simplified” and uses a new point system:Team members collect individual pointsTeam members collect points from January to December by finishing in the Top 30 of each category (men/women/mixed) at an ÖTILLÖ World Series or an ÖTILLÖ Merit Race TEAM event. The winning teams will earn a maximum of 60 points (ÖTILLÖ World Series) and 30 points (ÖTILLÖ Merit Race) per athlete. At the beginning of the year, every athlete in the ranking has the chance to apply with a team partner of their choice. ÖTILLO will then add all accumulated points of both partners and create its ÖTILLÖ qualification list, which will be the basis for the invitation to participate at The Swimrun World Championship. How Does the New Point System Work:The Top 30 teams that finish a race in each category (Men/ Mixed/ Women) at ÖTILLÖ World Series events and ÖTILLÖ Merit Races get ranking points. With these points you can apply for Ranking selection at ÖTILLÖ, The Swimrun World Championship. All athletes in the ranking will be provided with an invitation to apply for a spot with a partner of their choice that also has collected ranking points in 2023. The two individual rankings will then be added together and will lead to a team ranking for the qualification of ÖTILLÖ, The Swimrun World Championship 2024.Applications based on Swimrun Rankings take place from January 1st-25th with the announcement of teams taking place on Swimrun Christmas, a.k.a., The first Thursday in February. (Feb. 1 in 2024)The points are distributed based on the following criteria:Racers get individual ranking points at all ÖTILLÖ World Series team events and ÖTILLÖ Merit Races (long distance only) from January 1st to December 31st (calendar year). No points for Solo category racers!Ranking points will be awarded to Top 30 finishers of ÖTILLÖ World Series (WS) and ÖTILLÖ Merit Races (MR) in each category (Men/ Mixed/ Women)Points for ÖTILLÖ World Series Races (WS): 60 for winning team/ athletePoints for ÖTILLÖ Merit Races (MR): 30 for winning team / athleteAt WS races points are allocated ranks 1-30 with 2 points difference to the next placed team (1st: 60 pts, 2nd: 58 pts etc.)At MR races points are allocated ranks 1-30 with 1 point difference to the next placed team (1st: 30 pts, 2nd: 29 pts etc.)Confirmed ÖTILLÖ Events for 2024:ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Utö - June 8thÖTILLÖ Swimrun Engadin - June 29thÖTILLÖ Swimrun Mackinac - June or July TBCÖTILLÖ Swimrun Gothenburg - August 3rdÖTILLÖ Swimrun Casco Bay - August 11thÖTILLÖ Swimrun Sprint Final 15k August 31stÖTILLÖ The Swimrun World Championship - September 2ndÖTILLÖ Swimrun Orcas Island - September 15thÖTILLÖ Swimrun Cannes - October 12thÖTILLÖ Swimrun Pace Bend Park - November 3rdSummaryIn closing, we think that while it will be more straightforward to qualify under the ranking system, it may be harder for “slower” teams to garner enough points to qualify easily but definitely not impossible. We think that these new rules are an improvement and reflect the reality that there are many Swimrunners experiencing events with different partners and this new system really embraces that. Finally, we definitely recommend that teams put the World Championship in their sights and experience the sheer epicness of the Stockholm Archipelago for themselves.Enjoy!~~~That’s it for this week’s show. Ep 199Swimrun 201: Tether Evolution

Welcome to episode 199 of the Löw Tide Böyz - A Swimrun Podcast! In this episode, we share another installment to our ad hoc Swimrun 201 series. In this edition, we talk about our “tether evolution.” We’ll rehash some tether basics for new listeners, chronicle our tether use over the years and share our latest thinking on how to achieve Swimrun flow with (and without) the tether.Tether(ed) LinksCheck out our Swimrun 101: The Tether and our article in Triathlete Magazine (Online Edition). “What’s the Deal with the Tether?” for a bunch of great beginner content about the Swimrun tether. We also have several videos on our YouTube Channel on how to make a tether and a video version of our Swimrun 101 episode explaining this magical piece of Swimrun kit. Tether EvolutionIn our 5ish years of participating in Swimrun, we have gone through all the stages of tether use from minimal use, to “all the time” use, and now to our latest stage of trying to race without it. We will see how it goes but given that our relative fitness is pretty close, we thought that we would try what a lot of super experienced Swimrun teams do, namely, use the tether only when needed and/or for swim guidance, and not for “pulling” purposes. Our theory is that this will minimize things to fiddle with during the race and allow us to move through the environment all the more seamlessly.Tether CaveatAs with anything Swimrun, there are a lot of ways to experience the sport and set up your team’s kit and we highly, highly recommend that teams try everything out in practice before race day.Enjoy!~~~That’s it for this week’s show. Ep 193Dr. Justin Ross, Sports Psychologist

Welcome to episode 193 of the Löw Tide Böyz - A Swimrun Podcast! We’ve got a great episode for everyone this week. Joining us in studio G is Dr. Justin Ross. We had this conversation right before leaving for Sweden and it seems fitting to share it upon our return. But first…Training UpdateIt feels really nice to say that there is no longer a 70km ÖTILLÖ-sized elephant in the room and we can get back to a more realistic training volume. No rest for the weary though as Chris is headed to Massachusetts for the inaugural Swimrun Cape Cod.ShoutoutWe’re giving a blanket shoutout this week to everyone that reached out to us to either wish us well in Sweden and/or checked in on us afterwards. Ep 190Team Surprise Nu Swimrun

Welcome to episode 190 of the Löw Tide Böyz - A Swimrun Podcast! We’re headed to France this week to chat with Team Surprise Nu Swimrun, A.K.A., Benjamin Dupain and David Pesquet. They are one of the top French teams heading to Stockholm for the World Championship and we caught up with them to chat about their 5-year Swimrun partnership, how they are preparing for the big day, and the importance of experience. This was a fun conversation and we can’t wait to share it with all of you. But first…Training UpdateOur last big week of training is in the books and we’re almost at the “hay is in the barn” stage of our training for ÖTILLÖ. After a 5-hour Swimrun practice on Friday and a 3-hour trail run on Sunday, it’s safe to say that we’re looking forward to tapering soon.ShoutoutOur shoutout this week goes to Chip Warner. He’s our newest Patron on Patreon and also happens to be racing ÖTILLÖ, in a few weeks! Thank you so much for the support and see you in a few weeks.Feats of EnduranceWe’re giving another blanket award this week to all the teams that lined up for the second edition of the One Water Race. Amazing feats of endurance all around!Make sure to sign up for our LTBz Strava Club and join Swimrunners from around the world as they train for stuff. This Week in SwimrunThere are some epic events happening that will cause all Swimrun eyes to turn towards Scandinavia for the next few weeks. Let’s get right to it!The 8th edition of the legendary Rockman Swimrun took place over the weekend and it looked extra-epic from its usual level of epicness. Conditions were challenging with cold, rough swims, technical trails, and, of course, the 4,444 step climb to Pulpit Rock. The epic-ness continues this week with the 2nd edition of the One Water Race taking place. We’ll have more coverage about this event in a few weeks with race director, and Swimrun OG, Thomas Ogander. Finally, there’s a small race in Sweden taking place in a few weeks that you may have heard of called ÖTILLÖ, The Swimrun World Championship. This will be the 17th edition of this race and the first under the watch of ÖTILLÖ’s new race director, Staffan Björklund. Make sure to check out our interview with Staffan and learn about how super stoked he is to be a part of the rich history of this epic race.Team Surprise Nu SwimrunIt was great to catch up with Ben and David. We had met briefly after the World Championship last year (and learned that Ben was married to a Puerto Rican) and we kept track of their exploits on IG. They have a similar origin story to us so it was cool to chat about how they met, the benefits of racing with the same partner, and got all kinds of training and strategy tips from them for ÖTILLÖ. They are amazing athletes and great ambassadors for the sport.Enjoy!~~~That’s it for this week’s show. Ep 188Ark Sport VIGG and VIGG AIR | Gear Talk

Welcome to episode 188 of the Löw Tide Böyz - A Swimrun Podcast! We have another edition of Gear Talk with Annie and Brooke of the Swimrun Labs this week. In this episode we (finally) discuss the Ark Sports VIGG and the brand new VIGG AIR Swimrun wetsuits. It was surprising to all of us that we haven’t given this suit proper review treatment but it was likely because Chris, in particular, has been singing its praises since 2018 and would mention the suit whenever it seemed like a natural place to bring up how awesome he thought it was. Does the rest of the gang agree? In short, yes!!!! It was unanimous that we all thought the VIGG suit was an amazing piece of kit and 5 pull buoys were given by everyone. We’d like to give Ark Sports a huge thank you for sending us their new VIGG AIR suits to test and review.Enjoy! That’s it for this week’s show.
