Show Notes
Mass incarceration is often explained as the result of racism alone. Racism mattered—but it wasn’t the whole story.
In this episode of Nuance, I revisit the late 1980s and 1990s to explore the fear, violence, economic collapse, and community pressure that shaped the policies that followed. From open-air drug markets and rising homicide rates to the loss of industrial jobs and desperate pleas for safety, these conditions mattered—and they led to consequences we are still living with today.
This isn’t about excusing harm. It’s about understanding complexity so we don’t repeat it.
If there’s nuance I missed, add it in the comments. That’s how we all get smarter.
