SheWorks California Empowers Black Women in LA County: A Comprehensive Workforce Program
SheWorks California, a workforce program, is transforming the lives of Black women in Los Angeles County. Partnering with L.A. Care Health Plan, Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plan, and the California Black Women’s Collective Empowerment Institute, the program offers free five-month sessions at the Long Beach Community Resource Center.
The sessions cover digital skills, resume writing, interview practice, leadership, communication, and money management. Participants receive one-on-one career coaching, mentorship from successful Black women professionals, and links to job openings. They also get help with childcare costs and ride-share credits.
The program has been a lifeline for many, including a local woman who lost her job and father. She found hope, a job lead, and quick transportation aid after her first session. The program is a key way to boost economic chances amid recent job losses for over three hundred thousand Black women nationwide.
This years group started in January with thirty participants. The latest workshop focused on job hunting, applications, and mock interviews. Organizers received over one hundred fifty inquiries and forty-six full applications. The program continues to support grads through webinars with employers, job placement help, and ties to local businesses. More groups are planned for later this year in South Los Angeles and Inglewood, expanding access to these vital resources.
