Long Beach City Council Takes Action to Enhance Street Safety: A New Approach to Traffic Concerns and Vision Zero Goals

Long Beach city leaders have made a significant move towards improving street safety by unanimously approving plans to expedite responses to resident traffic concerns. The city manager and Public Works department will now set review standards, bring minor fixes like better crosswalks to council every quarter, and update the citys Vision Zero goals to reduce fatal crashes.

With over 200 traffic calming requests since 2023, the city has only prioritized 17 for improvements, causing frustration due to lengthy delays. Residents and council members expressed strong concerns during a recent meeting, highlighting the need for better safety measures and faster action.

In 2025, Long Beach saw 53 fatal traffic collisions, one of the highest in over a decade, with many involving pedestrians. The city plans to hire outside help for studies, set firm deadlines, find funding, and make traffic safety a budget priority for fiscal year 2027.

Public Works has already launched a new online portal for requests and rankings, as well as a pilot for speed cameras to enforce limits and fund fixes. Staff will report back to council in 90 days with progress on these changes and a refreshed Vision Zero plan.
