E 135. Ducks and Dogs with Sean Weaver of MeatEater

E

Tonight we had the pleasure of sitting down to hang out with MeatEater's Duck Man, Sean Weaver. If you haven't seen his show on youtube, Duck Lore, then you're missing out and need to rethink life a little. On the show, we hear about Sean's time growing up as a hunter, how he got involved in ducks, memorable retrieves, awesome hunts he has been on, and more. We also hear about his dog, Kace, and how her training is going, where she is from and the wholeeee deal. We also dig into some Duck Lore action and Sean's plans for the show and why he made it the way that it is (which we respect the heck out of). Finally, we ask Sean for his thoughts on the bird flu and how that may influence duck numbers, which snowballs into a super interesting conversation about the prairie pothole region, tamies and wild ducks and a lot, lot more. Thank you to Sean for joining us on the show and for working hard to positively influence the duck hunting community. If you're reading this, then you'd be a fan of his show... check it out here. E 134. Big News & Lone Duck Field Trials

E

Tonight, we announce some news that we've been waiting ~7 years to share. Pretty excited, pretty grateful and prettyyyyy pumped. After we chat through that and the plans moving forward, we move to a recap of Bob's field trial with a few Lone Duck dogs. It was a super difficult layout and tons of dogs struggled to stay on course. Bob reviews how it went, what he learned and how you and he can do better next time based off this experience. Oh, and reminder: we have an in person seminar with our friends at Standing Stone Kennel on 06/25/2022. If you want to join to learn from Bob and Ethan, watch some dogs work, eat good food and have some fun.... then get in touch ASAP. E 133. Expert Dog Training with Dakota Mealer

Tonight we had a great conversation with our good buddy, Dakota Mealer... you may remember him from a past episode. Dakota is a fantastic trainer who currently has our little girl, Jolene, to see what he can do with her. We get to hear a little JoJo update as she has been working through force fetch, swim by, cold blinds, pattern blinds and should be coming up on decheating in the near future. We also dig into a few tricks for getting a young dog into the water properly, using pigeons and ducks and what ideal dogs look like for Dakota when they first come to him. We chat about how and when to apply pressure and how to create compulsion with your dog. This is a super interesting conversation and it's one that many people (myself included) find confusing. Pay attention to how Dakota explains all this... Lone Duck's Gun Dog Chronicles is part of the Waypoint Outdoor Podcast Crew. Follow 'em and you'll be glad you did. Learn more about your ad choices. E 132. How to pass The Grand with Clark Kennington

Do you run any sort of test with your dog? If yes, then listen up. On today's show, Bob chats with our good buddy, Clark Kennington. As a repeat guest on the show, you might be familiar with how talented and articulate Clark is and on this episode he unleashes about 500 pro tips on how to be a better handler. We dig into the HRC Grand and what it takes to play that game, both as a handler and dog..... and pass it. Here's a couple items we address on the show: Why do you slow down at the line. Why monitor wind direction. How does Clark take detailed notes for each dog and when. When to move around at the line (if possible) to set the dog up for success. Do we recall dogs when training on marks... why? when? Thank you to Clark for coming on and hangin' out. E 131. Chasing birds with Ira McCauley

Tonight's show is a special one. We reconnect with our good friend and someone we look up to for a whole bunch of reasons, Ira McCauley. When we first started this show, Ira was our first guest and if you haven't heard the show, check it out (episode 2) because you'll wet yourself laughing. For this show, we learn about Ira's podcast (the grind don't stop) and we hear the latest with Habitat Flats. Tis the season so we chat about turkeys and how Ira has killed 100+ turkeys in his career. We hear about his gun and the wild story it has and where its final resting place is. Ira is extremely knowledgeable about ducks and turkeys and business and building habitats for ducks and cooking wild game and he is also a vet among many other things. If you read that sentence outloud, you'd need to stop and take a breath because his woodsmanship resume is so long. The best part though? He's willing to share and trade stories. Cheers to you, Ira. We appreciate you. Lone Duck's Gun Dog Chronicles is part of the Waypoint Podcast Crew and if you're looking for some new shows to binge, check out the others in their podcast network. E 130. Training high level dogs with Oscar Mora

Today, we chat with our buddy, Oscar Mora, from Elevated Canine Academy. Oscar is a fantastic dog trainer out on the west coast and as you'll learn, he knows a thing or two about training athletic dogs with high drive. One of the questions we often receive is regarding "a high drive dog and how to manage it." With the stakes being quite high for dogs in protection competitions, we chat a lot about drive capping and how to work WITH a dog, their energy, drive, motivation, etc., rather than learning how to "manage" it. We often say it's important to train the dog in front of you and it's great to hear Oscar (who has tons of experience with all sorts of dogs) echo these opinions. We also learn a little about Oscar's time in the bite suit and in front of the movie camera. Overall, he's a super cool dude who is great at teaching dogs and people. If you're interested in learning more about Oscar and his programs, then check him out at Elevated Canine Academy. Lone Duck's Gun Dog Chronicles is part of the Waypoint Podcast Crew. E 129. Southern Oak & "training time is for teaching"

It is always a good time when we can kick back with our buddy, Barton Ramsey, from Southern Oak Kennels. He's been on our show before and we always have a great discussion about training, family, dogs, breeding and life. Barton is one of those people you spend time with and later you think man, I wish we hung out more. Tonight's conversation was absolutely incredible and you won't want to miss it. We talk about a million topics like: what to look for when breeding dogs, Barton's new dog, moose and his background and how cool he is. We chat about when our buddy, Adam Campbell, went out for a training day with the SOK crew, so we hear about the training day and their set up. Then, we dig into a good conversation about training blind retrieves and fueling the dog rather than stifling their confidence, place training like a pro & how Barton corrects a dog who is creeping. E 126. "Teaching your dog to think" -Kevin Cheff

Tonight, we have a fantastic conversation with Kevin Cheff, The Retriever Coach, about the nuances of collar pressure and a whole lot more. How to use an e collar with integrity, teaching dogs to properly understand collar pressure, collar conditioning to sit vs here, why Bob uses pressure to "kennel" and how to choose the right collar for your dog. Kevin says he prefers collars that are simple to operate and highly reliable.... we agree 100%. We also ask Kevin a few questions directly from our friends on Patreon (patreon.com/loneduckoutfitters/) and we chat about direct vs indirect pressure and give a few simple examples so everyone is on the same page. We're grateful to have Kevin come on our show. He is extremely intelligent, experienced and he is one of the best at teaching people about their dogs. E 125. Teaching dogs correctly

Tonight, Bob & Kevin provide a few exciting updates on what's happening at Lone Duck. Bob is down south sun tanning his way through this years training trip and getting after it with a trailer full of dogs. Overall, the dogs are doing well and certainly keeping him busy and we hear about some very very exciting litter news... After, we dig into some Q&A we did with people from Patreon and they pick Bob's brain about denials, t pattern distances and we chat a lot about training dogs rather than "training dogs to pass a test." PS. we're working on audio and yes, Kevin's didn't come out so well... we fixed it for the next show... sorry about that. Need some gear for training season? E 123. Bite 'em

For this week's show, Bob sits down with recurring guest and good buddy, KD Mathews, of Socratic Canine and shares some exciting news... He and Bob will be commentating at this year's K9 Street League event! It's like the bite dog and protection dog version of the SRS in the hunting dog world. Bob asks KD a ton of cool questions about the training involved, the types of situations people have to prepare their dog for, how people in the bite suits prepare, etc. and a ton more. The bite dog world is incredible and the crossover between the foundational principles of dog training for them and for the hunting world are similar. E 112. Dog training: principles vs methods

E

A few weeks back, a true dog man (KD Mathews) came to hang out and share some stories. KD lives down in sunny Florida and has been in the dog training business for the past 30 years and the reason is because he asks questions. Then he asks more. He asks the owners questions and in turn, teaches the owners about their dogs before really even teaching the dogs. Then ya know, he teaches the dogs, too. We dig into some leadership with dogs & people and surprise: coaching people and coaching dogs can be eerily similar. KD provides a phenomenal analogy that really hits home, especially since we all refer to ol' Lone D as Uncle Bob. Then we finish up chatting about bite work with dogs, the importance of a "denial" and how dogs never forget things, we just try to bury those memories deep, deep down below tons of positive reps. If you enjoyed the show as much as we did, hit up KD and learn more at socraticcanine.com... you'll be pleased you did. Cheers, brotherrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Learn more about your ad choices. E 111. The US Army's Gold Medalist, Amber English

Today's show was certainly a special one. We had the pleasure of speaking with 1st Lt. Amber English... but you might know her more as the bad to the bone wingshooter with nerves of steel who earned the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics. Amber has been competing for years and is currently shooting on the AMU team in the United States Army, so she has the coolest job ever. We learn about her time in Tokyo, the food she has eaten while traveling, her hunting plans for the fall and a ton more. Amber also shares some advice she's heard from coaches and she even offers some tips to help us become better shooters...we'll see how it goes. Hopefully, this isn't the last we hear from Amber because we didn't get to meet her dog, Cotton. Cheers to you, Amber. Learn more about the US Army's Marksmanship Unit here. E 109. High Drivin' Soggy Dogs & Free Stuff

Welcome welcome. Tonight's show was with our buddy, Doug, from Soggy Dog Gear. He's an awesome guy who enjoys training dogs and telling tales. Doug lives out in Michigan and that lucky dog happens to live in some prime bird hunting area (I'm not jealous or anything, it's fine). Anyway, we have a great time talking about how Doug got started working with dogs, new products from his dog supply company, a contest Doug is putting together for amateur trainers, Dogtra products he likes and possibly my favorite part of the conversation... we talk about fire breathing, pumped up, high drive dogs and how to handle them. Doug happens to own a fire breather and he and Bob talk a lot about obedience, ways to work with those kinds of dogs, lessons learned from k9 handlers, etc. We'll have to have Doug back on the show sometime because 1. he's the man and 2. we had a great conversation and I want to hear more about some grouse action. E 108. "Line up your tail, spine & attitude"

E

Our good buddy Adam Campbell is back on our show to talk dogs and catch up. Since we've last seen him, he and another buddy of ours, Jimmy Rodgers, have created an awesome podcast called The Dog House with Adam and Jimmy. If you're a fan of our show, then you'd enjoy theirs. We talk about Adam's dogs and how hot the weather can be for dog training where he's from. Adam gives some warm weather training tips for people and we dig into how Adam preps his dogs to peak at the right time. Specifically, we talk about peaking for the ol' Master Stashional event. We also pick his brain on some water work questions from a few friends of ours and his answers are awesome. Don't miss out on the dog training advice we get to enjoy in this episode! Cheers! E 107. Does your dog have TONS of giddyup?

E

Tonight's episode is one of my favorites so don't miss this. First, I really enjoyed the opener and chatting about the brands we like... I got Bob off topic and he got all flustered. Next, we learn how Bob is doing with the adopting some of Oliver's training techniques (if you're wondering what those might be, check out the previous 2 episodes). We also talk about the most recent hunt test where a bunch of dogs passed their tests and we had a handful of lone duck dogs qualify for the Master Stashional out in Idaho. We also chat with Bob about his training day with the local retriever club and how YOU can get involved with some cool clubs near you. Give it a shot, you have nothing to lose by meeting with a club to see if you'd be a good fit. Finally, and I think I'm going out of order here but that's ok, we hear a lot of frustration from Bob and this is the part I really enjoyed...hear me out on this. We get a lot of people who write in asking questions and we try to help problem solve and dissect the training scenario and see what sort of solutions we can create to help make the dog more confident and successful. At least once per day, someone says their dog is great with the collar on or they're great in training but once the collar comes off or once they're at the line for a test, the dog goes nuts. Well, this happens to everyone, even here at the Lone D and tonight, we hear all about it. Bob has been working hard with a few dogs who have soooo much drive that it's pretty tough to manage. Anyway, I liked the conversation because it's raw and straight shooting. This is how training dogs can be, it's hard. If your dog "is nuts and has so much drive they're tough to handle..." you aren't alone and cheers to you. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

E 106. Elite Training Part II (live show)

Tonight's show was a great time and we tried something new: recording during a live stream with our friends on patreon. We hung out and answered some of their questions and were able to interact quite a bit, so we had a really good time and appreciate those who could make it. E 105. Elite Training with Foundation Retrievers

E

Welp, we've had a couple weeks of chaos with a whole lot of traveling for hunt tests and long days training dogs but we're back and ready to share a few lessons learned. This week, we're hosting Oliver & Andrew from Foundation Retrievers and getting in a lot of good training. Bob and Oliver recap the past few weeks of hunt tests with the dogs, how they performed, where things went wrong and how they're busting butt to problem solve and earn passes. I feel like our show is usually pretty passionate. We put a lot of time and energy into Lone Duck Kennels and you can't help but get worked up talking about the wins and losses because of all the "investment" you put into this kind of work. Well, I think you'll feel the passion in tonight's show as Bob and Oliver dig into training advice and go back and forth with each other. It's certainly a positive discussion centered around building confident dogs and ways to increase the trust and relationship with your dog, but it's super interesting to hear all the different ways to accomplish the same training goal. What do you think? Oliver and Andrew will be here for another week, so we'll do a round two with these guys next time. Did we miss anything or do you have follow up questions? DM us and we'll get to it. Cheers. PS. Check out our buddies at Waypoint Outdoor Collective... they have tons of cool shows and if you like ours, you're gonna love some of our other friends' shows. E 103. Deep Dive: Intro to Handling

E

We've had a lot of people ask questions about mini t, t pattern, how do you get a dog to sit on a whistle, why does my dog loopy sit, etc., so tonight, we're tackling all of it. Bob and I catch up a little but we dig right into the meat of the show and try to thoroughly explain the process from start to finish and when to notice triggers along the way. These "triggers" are little things to watch for to know when your dog is ready for the next step in the process. We also answer a few other questions that came through Instagram (@loneduck) about breeding, how to choose parents, how to choose breeders and a whole lot more. E 102. Primal Canine Training

E

Tonight's episode was spent chatting with Mike Jones, the founder and head trainer at Primal Canine out in California. Mike is a super knowledgeable guy whose passion for dogs drives his business forward. E 87. Trainin' Dogs with Brandon Sweesy

E

We've had a lot of people ask about chatting with buddies who aren't pros with a hundred dogs in the kennel and more on the side of just a few. This made us think of our pal, Brandon Sweesy, of Northern Air Retrievers. He has a really good dog named Jones that he trained himself by watching Freddie King videos, reading and calling his breeder and you guessed it... actually training the dog in front of him. It was pretty cool to learn more about Brandon's training philosophy and how he handles his dogs in tests. We really dig into a good training discussion and we hope you enjoy it. We were pumped to find out that our new girl, Prairie, is a distant relative to Brandon's younger dog. It's funny how small this world can be, right? Check out Brandon and his dogs on his Instagram @northern_air_retrievers for some great photos and even better training tips. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
