Clayton Smith headlines most important defenders for Arizona State Sun Devils football in 2024

Arizona State Sun Devils football yielded a sneaky good defense last year. Despite the underwhelming box score numbers, the Sun Devils defense was feisty and miles ahead of where it was in previous seasons. Now entering the 2024 season and year two under defensive coordinator Brian Ward, Arizona State Sun Devils football has something to prove on defense and show that they can take that next step forward. Several players will be tasked with stepping up for the Sun Devils. The pass rush, led by Clayton Smith will need to continue building on the momentum they started last season. Smith, whose upside feels limitless, will be tasked with leading the charge. C.J. Fite will lead the defensive interior as a true sophomore, while the linebackers will need one or two of their veterans like Zyrus Fiaseu, Jordan Crook, Keyshaun Elliott, or Caleb McCullough to inherit the role that Tre Brown played last season. As far s inheriting roles go, perhaps nobody has bigger shoes to fill than Cole Martin, who will be tasked with being Jordan Clark's replacement, although LT Welch will have his hands full as well taking over for Ro Torrence. Shamari Simmons rounds out the defense as perhaps the biggest leader of them all.
