Antonio Pierce receives show-cause penalty to close the Arizona State Sun Devils recruiting scandal
The book on the Arizona State Sun Devils football recruiting scandal during the COVID-19 pandemic has finally been closed. Former defensive coordinator and leader recruiter Antonio Pierce was issued an eight-year show-cause penalty from the NCAA for his contributions to the University's recruiting violations during the dead period amidst the COVID-19 world pandemic. Pierce, now the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, will be unable to coach in college football again for the next eight years without a persuasive argument and plea to the NCAA for reinstatement. This comes months after former head coach Herm Edwards was dealt his five-year show-cause penalty for his complicity in the scandal. With everyone involved punished with the sanctions for the Arizona State Sun Devils football program concluded at the end of the year, the book on one of the darkest eras of Arizona State University athletics can finally be closed and put away forever. Many fans are left wondering, however, if Pierce and Edwards and anyone else involved in the violations received a fair punishment or if they were let off easy.
