City Administrator Rob Gerdes told the Tampa Bay Rays that St. Petersburg is under no obligation to repair Tropicana Field in time for Opening Day 2026. This comes after Rays president Matt Silverman wrote a letter to the city Dec. 30 saying the club has changed its position on repairs to the dome.Junior Caminero played Winter League baseball with his hometown team Leones del Escogido. Caminero, 21, hit .346 (9-for-26) with a 1.086 OPS in the seven-game final. Rays and Drew Rasmussen strike a deal that could reach $28 million. This multi-year deal with a team option for 2027, which buys out his first Free Agent year, comes with a $500,000 signing bonus and is guaranteed for approximately $8 million.-The righty who made his MLB debut in 2020 is expected to return as a starter this season after he returned last August from third elbow surgery.-The deal guarantees Rasmussen $8.5 million but could be worth up to $28 million. He gets a $500,000 signing bonus, $2 million for 2025, $5.5 million for $2026 and a team option for 2027 for $8 million. The trial for Wander Franco has been postponed until June 2, 2025. Reports are that the delay in the trial, stemming from his relationship with a minor, was the result of more than 30 witnesses not being present. Franco, 23, is facing charges of sexual abuse, sexual exploitation of a minor and human trafficking, with a maximum prison sentence of 20 years. The charges stem from a relationship with a then-14-year-old girl that started in December 2022, when Franco was 21.The delay was requested by the prosecutors as several key witnesses were not present, and there was some question if they were properly summoned. ESPN reported that only three of the 36 who are scheduled to testify were in the courtroom on Thursday; the Associated Press said it was three of 31.“Wander’s lawyer: “There is no case against Wander, for as many witnesses as they present, there is no case now.” Jaquez told other reporters he expects an acquittal. One of the prosecutors, meanwhile, said they felt they still had a strong case.Why would so many witnesses no-show? Rays President Matt Silverman responded to Pinellas county officials saying the 'deal is still in effect' contradicting their earlier stance by Brian Auld who said the 'deal is dead'. The Tampa Bay Rays have added LHPs Joe Rock and Ian Seymour – to protect them from being eligible for the R5 Draft. Their two Rays top 30 prospects that needed to be protected. Notable omissions were Outfielder Jake Mangum, who hit .317/.358/.442 in 104 games for Triple-A Durham this past season. Also, RHP Evan Reifert.The Rays also DFA’d Austin Shenton and also signed RHP Cole Sulser, who was 1 of their 12 arb-eligible players to a 2025 contract.By 8 p.m. ET on Nov. 22, teams must formally tender contracts for 2025 to their players without guaranteed deals, including those eligible for arbitration. 2024 Player Review: Jose CaballeroThe Tampa Bay Rays traded Luke Raley to the Seattle Mariners last offseason for José Caballero. Caballero became only the second Rays player (Carl Crawford did it first) to lead the American League in stolen bases this year. He said, “The goal I put to myself at the beginning of the season was that I wanted to reach 50,” said Caballero, who swiped 28 bases in his 2023 rookie season with Seattle (the Rays acquired him in January in exchange for Luke Raley). “I was kind of short on that. If I’m the American League leader in stolen bases, it would be a gift. But I’d be a little sad about myself because I couldn’t reach 50.” He was second on the team in doubles behind Yandy Diaz and showed ability to pull-side extra base hits, with the ability to hit the ball for singles all over the field.
