The Lakers had to wait until Game 15 to see it happen, but LeBron James finally played his first game of his 23rd NBA season, and while it took a sec to get going, once it did, the results were great. LeBron was integral to a second half push that turned what had been a close game into a relative blowout, as the Lakers beat the Utah Jazz 140-126 at Crypto.com Arena. LeBron was quiet from a scoring standpoint (11 points) but was a terror as a distributor, finishing with 12 dimes and setting up a series of buckets for the Lakers as they pulled away. Of course, he wasn't alone. Luka Dončić finished with 37 points on 11-22 shooting, plus 10 assists and four steals. Austin Reaves, 26 points. Deandre Ayton, 20 points and 14 boards. Now the Lakers get a few days of practice and rest before heading to Utah for a game on Sunday. They could use the time to refine the defense now that everyone is available (Gabe Vincent returned to the lineup, as well), because if there was something to criticize on Tuesday, that would be it. The Lakers allowed 71 points in the first half, and while they tightened up in the third into the fourth (Utah got some buckets after the game was out of reach, they're going to need to be better on that side of the ball. JJ Redick has some first world problems to deal with. LeBron James is on his way back, and after practicing Monday in El Segundo could make his season debut Tuesday night against the Jazz. But even if that has to wait until Sunday's rematch in Utah, the Lakers are basically whole for the first time this year. (Not only was LBJ on the practice floor Monday, Gabe Vincent was as well.) So now JJ has to make some choices about his lineup, most notably, who starts? The Lakers will obviously put Luka Dončić, LeBron, Deandre Ayton and (despite the protests of a vocal minority of Lakers fans who think he should come off the bench...) Austin Reaves. So does Rui Hachimura sit, or Marcus Smart? Smart seems to make the most sense on paper, given the way he evens out the team defensively, even while compromising some of the spacing at the other end. On the other hand, Rui has been good this season, is easily the team's best shooter, and small p politics tends to say that players don't lose a spot they have unless it's performance based. The Lakers finished their five game road trip in fine form, beating up the Bucks in Milwaukee.Now they return home to some good news, with LeBron James expected to return to practice Monday. Whether he plays Tuesday at home against the Jazz remains an open question, but if he doesn't, barring any sort of setback it's a pretty safe bet he'll play on Sunday in Utah. Not only does that long stretch between games give LeBron a chance to gain a little more strength and fitness, it also lets the Lakers get some practice time in, and shore up any slippage on both sides of the ball. This ahead of what is a very winnable stretch of games between now and the end of the month. 4-2 over their next six is achievable, for sure.That would leave them at 14-6 heading out for a long December road trip, positioned well to establish themselves in the West's top four over the long haul.One big reason the team has played so well despite multiple players in and out of the lineup is the performance of Deandre Ayton. Averaging over 16 points and 8 rebounds a game on nearly 70% shooting (with a block per night) Ayton has been exactly what the Lakers hoped. The effort and energy has been there on a nightly basis. Now THAT'S more like it. The Lakers—playing the second night of a back-to-back and coming off a good, but not exactly inspiring win in New Orleans—came out of the gate red hot and sharp in Milwaukee, using high end offense and excellent defense to build a 30-point lead on the home team in the first half. That was the best combination of offense and defense the Lakers have played all year. In the end, the Lakers absorbed a third quarter run from the Bucks and never let the lead drop back to single digits. Final score, 119-95. Luka Dončić led the way with 41 points, nine rebounds and six dimes. Austin Reaves was 9-17 from the floor en route to 25 points, with six boards and eight assists. Deandre Ayton played another strong game, with 20/10 and strong defense often matched up against Giannis. Good minutes as well (especially in the first half) for Dalton Knecht, Jaxson Hayes and Maxi Kleber, and Adou Thiero made his NBA debut (and left with a game ball after the Lakers basically refused to leave the floor without it).All in all, a GREAT finish to a road trip that got off to a terrible start and looked very much in peril after the Lakers got waxed by OKC. They'll take the floor Tuesday, perhaps with LeBron on the floor, then won't play again until Sunday. So some rest and some good practice time is in store for a team with a tidy 10-4 record. It wasn't a nailbiter, it wasn't a disaster, it wasn't a dominant performance. The Lakers came to play, but they didn't necessarily play well. Final score against a very, very bad New Orleans team, 118-104. Austin Reaves led the Lakers in scoring, with 31 points, using 13 trips to the free throw line to push the attack. Luka Dončić wasn't efficient (6-16) but did finish with 24 points and a healthy 12 assists against three turnovers. Deandre Ayton (10-11, 20 points, 16 rebounds with a two steals and a block) was probably the team's most consistent player. The Lakers certainly got the job done, but what looked in the first 12 minutes or so like it would be a very strong performance where they put the Pelicans away early became something different. New Orleans went on a couple big runs fueled by 3-pointers, and the Lakers seemed to fall in and out of rhythm offensively. All in all, a far better effort than the opening game of the trip in Atlanta, and you could argue the hot start letting them play from way ahead makes it better than the Charlotte game. But they'll need more to beat Milwaukee on Saturday. JJ Redick laid it out plainly - the Lakers have been lousy thus far on their first extended road trip of the season. As a reminder, they forgot to show up against a wildly shorthanded Hawks squad. Then they played one good half of hoops to bury a terrible (and shorthanded) Hornets team. They lost in Oklahoma City by a billion. It's not been a fun tour of the country thus far. And so the Pelicans, who will be without Jordan Poole and Zion Williamson and have only won two games this season and have the West's worst point differential, are a team they should be able to beat even without their best effort. But given how things are going, and with Milwaukee looming on Saturday, their best effort is what the Lakers nonetheless should deliver. Not just to get everyone off their feet and resting for the second night of the back to back, but because the Lakers need to get back in the habit of executing well. That's what they'll need to finish the trip strong against the Bucks. The good news is that LeBron is working his way back, going through a pair of practices with South Bay, and nearing a return with the big club. If not Tuesday night against Utah, perhaps in the team's next game, which would come five nights later against the Jazz in Salt Lake City. First and foremost, the Thunder are awesome. What they did Wednesday night to the Lakers in Oklahoma City they've basically done to every team they've played this season. It's why they've lost only once and have a point differential that is the league's best and went up considerably after the Thunder beat the Lakers 121-92. LA was overmatched from the start, and never found their way into the game. The primary differentiator in this one was OKC's defense—fueled by their absurd athleticism and wealth of high end defenders—which was suffocating and made life impossible for Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves. As those guys struggled with inefficiency, the Thunder were able to generate whatever looks they wanted. Seven Thundarians finished in double figures. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was dominant. So was Chet Holmgren, and Ajay Mitchell did great work. This is a team that's simply better than the Lakers, who need someone like LeBron in order to be competitive with a team at this level. Of course, the Thunder played without Lu Dort and Jaylen Williams, the latter of whom hasn't played a minute this season. In some ways, the Thunder did the Lakers a favor. They came out, played well, and exposed every area in which the Lakers must improve. There was nothing subtle about it. Now we'll see how the Lakers respond. The Lakers have a big game tonight in Oklahoma City against a Thunder squad that is throttling the NBA, even while All NBA forward Jaylen Williams hasn't played a single minute this year. Chet Holmgren has missed time, as has Lu Dort. Doesn't matter. The Thunder have been incredibly good defensively, for starters, and that doesn't change when the lineup shuffles around. (The offense does, but that's a different story.) So the Lakers have to figure out how to navigate an incredibly disruptive defense that can out-athlete them all over the floor. Of course, that was the situation last year, too, and the post-trade Lakers played Oklahoma City very competitively, to the point some wondered if they should have been trying to draw OKC in the playoffs. Can the Luka Dončić/Austin Reaves combo repeat last year's success, with LeBron on the sidelines? If so, that would add some serious legitimacy to this early season start for LA. Meanwhile in Dallas, the hammer finally dropped on Nico Harrison. The GM who traded Luka to LA is out of a job, after the Mavs struggled post-deadline last year, and have been awful to start this season. Fans have been chanting Fire Nico! at every home game, and the situation became untenable. As poorly as the Lakers played Saturday in Atlanta, we'll get a quick idea of whether or not they learned a lesson. Because the Lakers now head into Charlotte, who like the Hawks are missing a bunch of key players, including LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller. When whole, the Hawks are a good team in the East, but should have been beaten without so many key players. The Hornets are terrible no matter who is playing for them. And without two of their stars, plus a questionable Miles Bridges, there is simply no excuse for the Lakers not to win. One thing that will help, aside from effort, is a more efficient Luka Dončić. While his overall numbers remain elite and he's still playing great, Luka has also had a few of his less efficient games, from a shooting perspective. Would a healthy Austin Reaves, listed as questionable fior this game but expected to be available at some point on the trip, help bring that efficiency back up? It certainly wouldn't hurt. And the Lakers more broadly would very much love to see more of those two on the floor before LeBron James comes back in a week or two. Because even if LeBron plays well and improves the team upon coming back (which is a very, very reasonable supposition) the Lakers will nonetheless have big decisions to make next year about James, even if he wants to return. The Lakers, even without LeBron James and Austin Reaves—who continues to nurse a groin injury—had a golden opportunity to keep momentum going Saturday in Atlanta, against a Hawks team missing Trae Young, Jalen Johnson, Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Kristaps Porzingis. Most of their available players were folks only die hards and serious fantasy players would know. Maybe the Lakers thought it would be easy? Because this was easily their worst effort since the opener. Final score, 122-102, and honestly it wasn't that close. The Lakers were inattentive all night, particularly on defense. They turned the ball over far too often, making life easier for the Hawks. On the plus side for LA, Luka Dončić got to sit down early, Jarred Vanderbilt had 18 rebounds and Maxi Kleber made his way back onto the floor. But that's about it. Bad start to the trip, and now the Lakers really need to crank things up in Charlotte on Monday, then through the more challenging portion of the trip, In OKC and Milwaukee. The Lakers released some good news Thursday. LeBron James has resumed full contact basketball activities, and will be re-evaluated in another week or two. Keep in mind, he missed all of training camp, and the last bit of run up heading into camp, so James is definitely behind in his fitness. He needs to make sure he's fully prepared to play before stepping back on an NBA court. He won't accompany the team on the upcoming road trip, and that's actually a good sign. It means he can really intensify the ramp up. The earliest then he could return is November 18th. So what happens when he comes back? How will he fit in with a group that is playing very well? Will there be disruption? Maybe some. Will there be drama? Not the kind you might be thinking of, at least. What it should do is make the Lakers better, and provide Luka Dončić with a lot more support. His workload should come down a little, and there's less to go around as you move down the pecking order. But we're talking about adding a second team All NBA player from a year ago, the guy who finished 6th in MVP voting. Don't overthink it. LeBron getting close to a return is a very, very good thing. One big reason there won't be drama? Because this team is having a ton of fun. The vibes are quite strong. Lakers fans are enjoying watching them play, and that's in part because the Lakers themselves are enjoying themselves, too. Playing without Austin Reaves (along with the already injured LeBron James) the Lakers faced a tough game Wednesday against a one-loss San Antonio squad, led by Victor Wembanyama. It was, by everyone's account, an ugly, choppy and loooooooooong game with eleventybillion free throws, but in the end the Lakers found a way to win, grinding out a 118-116 victory to run their record to 7-2 on the season. Luka Dončić finished one rebound short of another triple double, and while it wasn't his most efficient game of the year (9-27 from the floor) Luka was still critically important to the win, and was facing a ton of pressure from the Spurs. Luka was supported by another excellent game from Deandre Ayton, who finished with 22 points on 9-13 shooting, and kicked in with 10 rebounds and a pair of blocks. Marcus Smart was huge defensively (no surprise) and while he missed six of his seven threes, made it to the free throw line 10 times and made them all. Rui Hachimura had some clutch buckets. Jaxson Hayes had nine off the bench. And overall, the Lakers continue to show a level of grit and physicality that is serving them well. They basically bullied Wemby into, at best, his second worst game of the year. Another great win for a team that's starting to build something very positive. The Lakers are playing well. They've won six of eight without LeBron in the lineup. Luka Donćić has missed four games, and the Lakers have won three. The new guys, most notably Jake LaRavia, Marcus Smart and Deandre Ayton are all making very strong early season contributions. so while a lot of attention has rightly gone to the production Luka is putting forth when he does play, or the incredibly high level Austin Reaves has been performing, it's worth making sure any discussion of the strong start gives credit to GM Rob Pelinka - not the most favored man in LA, typically. So what does he get credit for? Can he claim the Ayton signing as one that required him to do some serious GMing? What about Smart or Ayton? Were those more lucky (unexpected buyout market) or excellent work or both? What about LaRavia? He's in a different category for sure. What's important, too, is that the answer this year can be "yes," but not necessarily represent a bet on Pelinka's ability to shrewdly build rosters down the road. Meanwhile, It's Lakers vs. Spurs Wednesday night. Luka should available, but Austin Reaves might miss another game with a groin injury. Dylan Harper is out for the Spurs, as is De'Aaron Fox. So it won't quite be what fans wanted to see if those guys can't play... but honestly as long as Wemby is available many ticket paying Lakers fans will get to see what they want. The Lakers came into the game Monday in Portland without Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves, getting the night off after beating Miami Sunday at home. LeBron James is still on the sidelines. Gabe Vincent is still hurt. So a lot -- a lot -- of star power and rotation depth was in street clothes. So if you were expecting a blowout, you were almost right... but probably not in the way you expected. The Lakers used a very strong second half to pull away from the Blazers, winning 123-115. Huge games from Deandre Ayton in his return to Portland (29 points on 14-19 shooting, plus 10 rebounds and three blocks), Rui Hachimura (10-15, for 28 points) and Nick Smith Jr., pressed into action and allowed to cook, finishing with 25 points 10-15 shooting. those three provided the buik of the scoring, but they weren't the only contributors. Bronny James had his best game as a pro, with six assists, a steal and very sold defense against the Blazers. Jake LaRavia had 11/5/6. Marcus Smart didn't shoot efficiently, but set a strong defensive tone, contributing to three steals. It was a fantastic win for a shorthanded Lakers team building all sorts of confidence, and piling up important wins even with key pieces missing. The Lakers came home on a quick trip, facing a stronger-than-expected Miami Heat squad looking to add some legitimacy to their solid start to the season. It was an entertaining, fast paced game, but one the Lakers kept control of, pulling away at the end for a 130-120 win. Luka Dončić led the way with yet another triple-double (29/11/10, along with three steals), and Austin Reaves had 26 (to go with 11 assists of his own), but neither guy was efficient from 3-point range (5-25 between them). No worries, the rest of the team had them covered. Rui Hachimura hit three of his five attempts, Marcus Smart had three, and Jake LaRavia had two. Even Jaxson Hayes had one! LaRavia was spectacular overall, again getting big minutes in the absence of Deandre Ayton (back) and scoring 25 points, to go with eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. (As a team, the Lakers finished with 14 thefts.) The supporting cast was quite strong overall, a needed boost given how Reaves and Luka struggled from downtown. The Lakers piled up assists, and kept the turnovers down (11), and were efficient from the line (19-23). Now it's on to Portland, where the Lakers will face the Blazers Monday night. The Lakers got a Halloween treat Friday when Luka Dončić and Marcus Smart were upgraded to probable ahead of their game in Memphis, and man alive, did it turn into quite a fright for the Grizzlies. Luka dropped a smooth 44 in his return, to go along with 12 rebounds and six assists. He was, once again, incredible, in MVP form. The Lakers, meanwhile, got supporting performances from Jake LaRavia and Jaxson Hayes off the bench, and Smart helped set a tone defensively in a second half where the Lakers held Memphis to 43 points. So coming home to face a Miami squad that has played surprisingly well to start the year, the Lakers move to 4-2 and weathered what looked a week ago like it might be a very, very tough stretch of games with Luka expected to miss more time than he did, and the Lakers facing some tough opposition. The recent updates and news about the health of Luka Doncic and Marcus Smart were certainly trending towards an impending return to action, with Smart seemingly more likely to suit up tonight in Memphis vs. the Grizzlies. Once again, the Lakers entered a game missing critical players, with Luka Dončić still out, Marcus Smart downgraded during the day (to out) and star/key pieces (LeBron James, Gabe Vincent) still sidelined. Once again, the Lakers put in a high quality effort, displaying a lot of heart, plenty of grit and surprisingly good execution. It was enough to give them a 20 point lead in the fourth quarter... one that totally disappeared. Down one with under 10 seconds to play, the Lakers put the ball in the hands of Austin Reaves, who split a trap, got into the paint and hit a floater at the buzzer for the win. It was a cap to another incredible performance from Reaves. 40 minutes, 28 points, 16 assists against only three turnovers, despite facing intense ball pressure, often against multiple players. Reaves had the most notable performance, and the highlight of the night, but other Lakers were great, too. Jake LaRavia was 9-10 from the floor, 5-6 from 3-point range, and grabbed eight rebounds. Deandre Ayton (8-11 shooting) finished with 17/10. Rui Hachimura finished with 17/5/4, Jarred Vanderbilt led the team with 12 rebounds, and while Dalton Knecht cooled off in the second half, he helped carry the team in the first. This was a huge win. After, JJ Redick was effusive in his praise, and rightly so. The Lakers have now won two games without Luka, and now head to Memphis for a Halloween game feeling good about themselves. Great night. The Lakers are in a bind, playing for at least a few more days without Luka Dončić, and for a lot more than that without LeBron James. But the hope for Wednesday in Minnesota at least is that the Lakers could get Marcus Smart and Jaxson Hayes back, which would make a huge difference against a Wolves squad missing Anthony Edwards. The Lakers are obviously getting a ton of production out of Austin Reaves (more on that in a moment), and that's just keeping them afloat. But while it's never good for this many guys to be out, are there any silver linings for the Lakers? Well, you can start with Deandre Ayton, who is getting a chance to assert himself aggressively in LA's offense, and the Lakers are getting a good feel for how Ayton best operates as an offensive weapon in the pick and roll. It's not all about finishing hard at the rim, for starters. And meanwhile, Jarred Vanderbilt is also getting a lot more burn than he otherwise might, which is significant because it means his body is healthy enough to handle it. If that trend holds over the course of the season, the Lakers can hopefully get the best version of Vando, and deploy him tactically without over-exposing him. Finally, an interesting observation from Sam Amick at The Athletic about soon-to-be-free agent Austin Reaves, and whether his scalding hot start represents a long term problem for the Lakers. Namely, does it potentially make AR too expensive, or drive up his value to the point the Lakers can't build around Luka with another guy absorbing that much cash. The Lakers were a step beyond shorthanded Monday, playing without Luka Dončić, LeBron James, Marcus Smart, Jaxson Hayes, Gabe Vincent (who is expected to miss 2-4 weeks with damage to his ankle) and Maxi Kleber. This on the second night of a back to back. So they were very, very short of ball handlers, very short of scoring, and were up against one of the more athletic and aggressive teams in the league. It wasn't pretty, but you can't fault the effort. Lakers still lose, though, 120-108. Too many turnovers (23) not enough shooting (7-27), not enough guys ready for this type of burn. Austin Reaves again was a hero, with 41 points, but was hurt by fatigue and relentless pressure from the Blazers (eight turnovers). The Lakers got another decent game from Deandre Ayton (16/8/2/1) but Portland's size was clearly impactful. Overall, the Lakers worked incredibly hard, and while the rebounding was an issue (particularly when Donovan Clingan was in the game) JJ Redick was pleased with the halfcourt defense, at least on those first attempts. Dalton Knecht may have found a little life, pressed into action and scoring 16 points, which was 16 of the 18 the bench produced. While Vincent will be out a while, Redick said he was hopeful that Smart and Hayes might be back for Wednesday's game in Minnesota. We'll see. With a couple more bodies, the Lakers could make a game of it, since Anthony Edwards won't be on the floor (hamstring). Sunday started with bad news, as the Lakers learned that Luka Dončić will miss the next week (at least) with a sprained finger on his left hand, and a lower body contusion. While the Lakers arent' reportedly all that concerned about the long-term severity of either, the schedule isn't kind, here. The Lakers play five games over the course of the week, starting Sunday in Sacramento. So no Luka, no LeBron James, no Jaxson Hayes for good measure, who missed another game with a knee injury. They'd need something special to win, and man alive did they get it from Austin Reaves. 51 points on 12-22 from the floor, and 21-22 from the free throw line. 11 rebounds, nine assists, only two turnovers. He was spectacular, but he wasn't alone. Deandre Ayton gave the Lakers a massive performance on a night they had to have it, finishing with 22 points on 10-17 shooting, along with 15 rebounds. Marcus Smart brought tremendous intensity. Jarred Vanderbilt was a disruptive force. Rui Hachimura was aggressive offensively. So how could this game help guys like Ayton over the course of a week where the Lakers are facing big challenges on the road? Are they capable of splitting the next four (at Portland Monday, then Minnesota, Memphis and Miami)? We'll see, but it's huge to get the win on Sunday for a start. Now THAT'S more like it. After a bad opening to the season on Tuesday against Golden State, the Lakers raised their level against a very good Minnesota team and bounced back with their first win of the season, 128-110. It was fueled, particularly early, by Luka Dončić, who scored 23 points in the first quarter, en route to 49 points overall. (To go with 11 rebounds and eight assists.) But the game turned when the rest of the cast started really pitching in, especially by changing the defensive energy. Marcus Smart changed the vibe of the game in a big way, and it carried into the second half, where the Lakers played a fantastic third quarter, outscoring the Wolves by 11. Contributions were all over the floor. Rui Hachimura finished with 23 points on 13 field goal attempts. Austin Reaves had 25 points, and only one turnover against 11 assists. Deandre Ayton found another gear in the second half, playing with much more aggression and confidence en route to 15 points and eight assists. So the Lakers will head to Sacramento for Sunday's game with a much better feeling, and a chance to get above .500 for the first time this year. The Lakers have a host of things to figure out ahead of tonight's game at the Crypt against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Not just because Minnesota is back in town after summarily dispatching the purple and gold in last year's playoffs -- though that's part of it -- they also badly need a bounceback performance following Tuesday's disappointment against the Warriors. So how to get there? One topic of conversation is still the starting lineup, and how Gabe Vincent was a magnet for mismatch hunting against Golden State. Jimmy Butler found him repeatedly, and ate Vincent for lunch. So what to do about that? Would he be better off the bench? Very likely, but if he starts again the other issue was the three points he scored. For a guy out there to help grease the wheels and provide some spacing, he was a non-factor. Another path? Marcus Smart suggests the Lakers get more physical, and be the toughest team every night, because it's the toughest team that gets to set the rules. And the Lakers without LeBron might just need to find ways to set the rules... assuming those rules involve very physical play that slows a game down and dares the refs to make calls. Luka Dončić is incredible, but the Lakers will need to find an identity and style of play that goes beyond just that for them to thrive while LeBron is out, and even when he's back. First things first -- Luka Dončić participated in Wednesday's practice, and according to JJ Redick seems fine following what looked like a groin/hip thing suffered late in Tuesday's loss to Golden State. He's expected to practice Thursday, and play on Friday when the Lakers host Minnesota at the Crypt. After that, there's a tremendous amount of uncertainty given the team's performance Tuesday night. There are questions about the bench, about diversity in scoring, about the relative lack of athleticism on the team relative to the rest of the West. How much of this is fixable? Based on the reaction to watching tape, the Lakers are confident they can in fact correct a lot of mistakes. Whether that's a matter of better coverages in transition, firmer screens and harder cuts, etc., the Lakers felt a great deal of what went wrong was in their control. How quickly can it be fixed? How much did a lack of cohesion during the preseason impact what was seen in the opener? Meanwhile, one thing that was definitely seen on Tuesday? LeBron James... doing nothing. Like, almost in the most literal sense. Sitting statuesque in the tall chair that the Lakers keep around for folks with back problems. It was a topic of conversation on Wednesday, and Redick noted at practice that LeBron was an active part of film study that day. The Lakers weren't great in the preseason, so in that sense, Tuesday's 119-109 opening night loss to the Warriors shouldn't be all that surprising. But in a game where Luka Dončić delivered 43 points, 12 rebounds and nine dimes and the Lakers still struggled to stay connected to Golden State, folks are going to be concerned.The Lakers got production from an imperfect Austin Reaves (26/9), but everywhere else in the lineup it was ugliness. Deandre Ayton's regular season debut was a bust. He was tentative offensively and inert on the glass. He did manage to hit double figures in scoring, which is more than Gabe Vincent or Rui Hachimura could say. The bench? The Lakers open the season tonight! The real games begin. It's Lakers vs. Warriors, on Peacock! (Something new for this year, and an early taste of a new TV arrangement for the NBA.) The Warriors are a team that mirrors a lot of what we think about the Lakrs. Obviously very good. Capable of beating any team in any series, even if they're not quite capable of winning four of them to get an NBA chip. But in any best-of-seven, if playing at full strength, nobody will want to see them. On the other hand, they rely on a bunch of old guys (more than the Lakers) and if anyone significant gets hurt? Forgettaboutit. (The Lakers in this sense have an advantage over the Warriors, because when people talk about old guys, it's really just LeBron.) So with LeBron injured, are the Lakers being knocked too far down in the West? What's a fair evaluation? And who can raise their ceiling, and the floor? What could happen that would rip a hole in that floor? Well, it starts with Luka. There's a massive difference between him performing like one of the two or three best players on the planet, and being a more conventional All-NBA level performer. Someone who'd make evan a second team. The Lakers are banking on him being the guy who averaged a 30 point trip-dub (more or less) two years ago in Dallas. That raises the team's ceiling. Anything less, and the Lakers may not get where they want to go. JJ Redick threw the Lakers socialsphere a curveball in Friday's preseason finale, choosing to start guard Gabe Vincent in the open spot vacated by LeBron James's early season injury. This, when most people expected either Jarred Vanderbilt or Marcus Smart. So why Vincent? You can argue that Vincent may not be the best at any one thing the Lakers feel like they need, but he ticks more boxes overall. Outside shooting? Yes, the way he's been doing it in the preason, at least. Defense? Pretty good, and is very good on concepts and reliability. He's not going to be the reason the system breaks down because he's out of position, or makes the wrong read. He can handle an offense, providing some direction and secondary ballhandling. Are Vando and Smart better individual defenders? Yes. Do both allow the Lakers to play bigger? Yes again. Could Smart have more overall offensive juice and a more diverse skillset? Sure could. But is Smart, who missed much of the preseason with tendinitis in his Achilles tendon, ready to carry the load of a starter? For that matter, do the Lakers trust Smart and Vando, who have both battled significant injuries over the last couple of years, can play starters minutes at the energy they require without breaking down? Luka Dončić looks ready for the season to start, dropping 31 points, five rebounds and nine assists on the visiting Sacramento Kings on Friday in the final game of the preseason for the Lakers, but it wasn't enough to get a win. LA loses to the Kings, 117-116.The "dress rehearsal" was interesting on a few levels, starting with... the starting lineup. Gabe Vincent was a surprise choice for the final slot, and to his credit he came out hot (as he's been throughout the preseason). The Lakers are down to one more preseason game, tonight at the Crypt vs. the Sacramento Kings. It will be the "dress rehearsal" JJ Redick has referenced for a few days. The hope, it had seemed, was to have two of these, but for whatever reason this will be the only game the Lakers will run with their opening night rotation. The starting lineup for Tuesday's season opener is still somewhat in question, but the tea leaves would indicate that Jarred Vanderbilt will slide into the spot created by LeBron James's injury. Tonight will certainly give some clues on Redick's approach. And it'll be a chance to see how the Lakers lean on guys like Deandre Ayton and Rui Hachimura to fill in some of the offensive space left vacant by LeBron, and what it looks like for Luka Dončić to truly be the sun around which the rest of the Lakers orbit. The Luka/Reaves combo, always under the microscope, will get plenty of burn to start the year, and perhaps send some signals as to where the Lakers go in the future once LeBron either retires or moves on to another team. The center rotation more broadly will be under a microscope, and Lakers fans should be feeling pretty good, given how Ayton has looked in the preseason, and the steady play from a bulked up Jaxson Hayes, now back to his more appropriate role as a backup. One of the only remaining mysteries is Marcus Smart, who came into camp nursing an injury, and has been treated with kid gloves throughout camp. He got 20 minutes of burn on Tuesday, but didn't make much of an impact. Will that change tonight? How much can the Lakers lean on him early? First things first: As suspected, LeBron James is hoping to return around mid-November, this from ESPN's Shams Charania. This timetable would have him missing about 15 games, which all things considered wouldn't be the worst outcome. James, who hasn't been able to participate in basketball activities since hurting himself in July, will need a few weeks to ramp up and ensure his fitness is restored to what it needs to be. If that happens around Halloween, mid-November is a reasonable target. Any delay, however... So the Lakers at least have some idea of how they'll play the first quarter of the season, give or take. Meanwhile, game 5 of the 6 game preseason is in the books, and it was another loss for the Lakers. Like the others, it wasn't without its high points. The Lakers played without Luka Dončić, Austin Reaves, Marcus Smart, Deandre Ayton and Maxi Kleber. And LeBron, of course, and Bronny James, too, who was nursing an ankle injury suffered Tuesday against the Warriors. So there's a limit as to what can be learned from a game like this one. But still, there were good performances worth noting, especially from Rui Hachimura, Jaxson Hayes and Jarred Vanderbilt. Meanwhile, Dalton Knecht continues to struggle in meaningful minutes. It's been a disjointed preseason for the Lakers, with critical players in and out (or in the case of LeBron James, just out) of the lineup, whether in practices or in the first three exhibition games. But tonight, that all changes! Barring any last minute emergencies, the Lakers will get the first of two anticipated "dress rehearsals" ahead of next week's season opener at the Crypt against the Golden State Warriors. Of course, LeBron won't be in uniform, so the Lakers not only have to get everyone on the same page as Luka Dončić, who will make his preseason debut tonight, but figure out who will take LeBron's place in the starting lineup. The most logical choices for JJ Redick are his two defensive aces, Marcus Smart (also playing in his first preseason game) and Jarred Vanderbilt. Vando would seem to have the inside track, if for no other reason than Smart could still be building up to a full workload as the Lakers treat his Achilles tendonitis with care. How do the Lakers replace LeBron's skill set? Obviously it gets divided among a lot of players, but it's not just about stats. James being out impacts how Redick organizes the guys who will take the floor. It's a big shake up. Finally, the Lakers are trying to bring Dalton Knecht back up to a place where he's not only a positive part of this team, but is seen to have value around the league. There were a lot of things about Tuesday's game in Phoenix against the Suns more important than the final score. Luka Dončić made his preseason debut and was dominant, just as he was in Europe this summer, finishing with 25 points, seven rebounds and four assists in only 22 minutes of floor time. Austin Reaves had 25 of his own.Deandre Ayton, who has been a rebounding monster this preseason, kept it up, with 13 boards and three blocks in his 26 minutes. Marcus Smart also made his Lakers debut, seeming to move freely in 20 minutes of burn (20 minutes in which he didn't take a single shot).But there were other things that will most certainly drive JJ Redick nuts, namely the defensive effort of the team, particularly in the second half. Yes, much of that was with deep reserves/G-Leaguers, but the last few minutes with the rotation guys weren't great, especially considering Phoenix sat about 80 percent of its expected regular season rotation.Along those lines, the Lakers were sitting guys too (Vando, Rui, Vincent). The Lakers got some good news on the floor Sunday, winning their first game of the exhibition season, 126-116 over Golden State at the Crypt. Strong games from Austin Reaves (who was banged up in the second half, but after the game was described as "fine" by JJ Redick), Rui Hachimura and Deandre Ayton -- three guys who will need to bring it without LeBron James in the lineup for the first 10 games at least. There were good performances from Dalton Knecht, Gabe Vincent, Jarred Vanderbilt and more. Overall, a strong effort for LA, who were playing without Luka Doncic, LeBron and Marcus Smart. So about Luka -- the Lakers did provide a little clarity on a very mysterious week. Luka is fine. He participated in full when the Lakers practiced Saturday, went through warmups on Sunday and will play in two of the final three games the Lakers play before the regular season starts on the 21st. The news out of El Segundo Thursday wasn't good. LeBron James, who hadn't participated in full speed drills yet this preseason, will miss the next 3-4 weeks with sciatica. At that point, he'll be re-evaluated. So there's really no guarantee all of this will be cleared up in a month. That means the Lakers will be without James almost surely for the first 9 or 10 games this season, and very (very, very) possibly for more. So what happens now? How much does this hurt the Lakers going forward? There is a tremendous amount to unpack, here. And to make it worse, Luka Dončić, who was a full participant last week in LA's camp activities up until the first two preseason games, hasn't practiced all week. The Lakers haven't really clarified as to why, but it means you have the team's second best player (who is top 10 in the league) and the team's best player (top 3, consensus) both on the sidelines. JJ Redick's frustration was certainly palpable in El Segundo on Thursday. At this point, with more clarity now available on LeBron, getting a handle on Luka's health becomes the major priority for the Lakers. Why he's sitting out is a matter of utmost importance, and the early part of the season at the least hinges on it. And in the West, losing critical players for any length of time can mean the difference of multiple spots in the standings. The Lakers are deep into their second week of training camp, creeping towards the opener on the 21st. LeBron James (nerve issue in his glute) hasn't practiced. And now Luka Dončić seems to be more limited now than he was last week. Luka missed the two preseason games the Lakers played last weekend, and has been a limited participant in practice since. Last week, Dončić was -- reportedly at least -- a participant in everything the Lakers were doing on the floor. That's not a good sign. Lakers fans are starting to see a lot of teams displaying the important work of critical preseason practices. They're wondering if the team simply isn't serious enough about the preseason. But is the more appropriate worry that they're not healthy enough to put in the type of grind fans would prefer to see? LeBron has gone from hopefully participating in a one of the four remaining preseason games to hopefully being ready for the regular season opener. And now Dončić is going the wrong way. It's been so disjointed that when asked what it's like to work with Luka and LeBron, new center Deandre Ayton said he doesn't know, because it hasn't happened yet. That's... not good. So are they unserious? Or more untruthful? At some point, if Luka isn't on the floor, the Lakers are going to need to provide an explanation of some sort. One person likely to get an explanation ... from a judge? The fellow who sued LeBron after James revealed that the big Decision 2.0 was just an ad for cognac as opposed to some sort of retirement announcement. So LeBron chooses cognac! And in the process, got a lot of eye rolls from people who thought maybe bigger news was coming, or found the ad itself to be corny... which it kinda was because most things LeBron does now are goofy/corny in a dad humor sort of way. That happens when you're 40. But more importantly, the Lakers might be choosing to keep him out of preseason games entirely, with the hope he's ready to go, fully healed from the nerve irritation in his glute, by the start of the regular season. It would be a downer for James not to get any floor time with the team before the 21st, because it would significantly impact the ability to build chemistry. But more importantly, it indicates this pain in the butt might be more than just training camp caution. Meanwhile, Marcus Smart was on the floor Tuesday (great, great news) and very quickly showed what he brings. Finally, there's some movement in the Giannis Watch! part of the NBA world. Shams over at ESPN reports that if he asks out of Milwaukee, it'll be with New York as a preferred destination. Given how unlikely it seems that Nikola Jokic will leave Denver when his contract is up, this news would put a serious damper on any big plans for the summer of '27. The Lakers have lost their first two preseason games. More significant than the scores, though, are the names in the box score. Luka Dončić and LeBron James both sat out the weekend's games, as did Marcus Smart. Maxi Kleber has also been in street clothes, and Austin Reaves missed the second game after playing well in the preseason opener. No question, there are reasonable explanations for all of it. Luka played deep into Eurobasket (and has been on the practice floor through the first week). LeBron has been nursing a sore glute and noted heading into camp that he and his camp think LeBron went a little too hard in the preseason last year. Smart has an Achilles problem, so caution is warranted. And so on. But at the same time, if the Lakers are going to eat up the gap between them and the teams in front of them (or at least perceived to be in front of them) out West, they need to maximize their upside. That starts with getting as many reps as possible in training camp. That's not happening. So is it by choice? Are the Lakers re-starting what had become a trend of kinda blowing off training camp? Overall, JJ Redick was happier with the effort in Sunday's 111-103 loss to the Golden State Warriors in San Francisco than he was with the preseason opening loss to Phoenix on Friday. And again, the Lakers were missing frontline players - this time, Luka Dončić and LeBron James sat again, and were joined by Friday's star Austin Reaves. Still no Marcus Smart or Adou Thiero. So not only were they short on talent compared to the Warriors, who played starters (at least in the first half), they were playing some combinations that likely won't be seen in the regular season, with people playing roles they won't likely play. On the positive side (at least if you exclude an abysmal third quarter), the Lakers got very good performances from Jarred Vanderbilt, who continues to move like the version of the guy they acquired a couple years ago. He was disruptive defensively, active on the boards, and -- by his standards especially -- was pretty effective finishing on offense, including drawing and and-one, and what appeared to be some sort of Eurostep. Vincent hit 3-7 from beyond the arc, and all five of his free throws. Deandre Ayton didn't get off to a great start, but played much better as the first half went along, getting more aggressive in the pick and roll, getting on the glass and pretty consistently changing shots in the paint, defensively. So there are things to be encouraged by. The Lakers get a week of practices before their next game (Sunday at home against the Warriors). Redick is hoping to get a couple of dress rehearsals before the end of the preseason, so everyone will be monitoring whether LeBron gets on the floor this week, and puts himself in position to play in Sunday's game. The Lakers opened the preseason without a lot of rotation players in uniform (no Luka Dončić, LeBron James, Marcus Smart and Gabe Vincent), and it certainly looked liked they missed them. While there were some good individual performances, as a group the Lakes were sloppy and couldn't make a bucket to save their lives (31 percent overall, 17 percent from downtown), losing to Phoenix 103-81. Austin Reaves played will in his minutes, with 20 points, three rebounds and two dimes. Rui Hachimura was active defensively and was second among starters with 11 points, but he was also 3-12 from the floor. Deandre Ayton? Eight rebounds and two blocks in 18 minutes... but also only one point and two shots, overall. Jarred Vanderbilt definitely looked mobile and active, which is great, but also didn't have a field goal in four tries. Dalton Knecht? 2-10. Bronny James? 1-12! Jake LaRavia played a nice game, as did the bulked up Jaxson Hayes. But overall, this was a disjointed team effort. Nothing to sweat so early in the preseason, with so many important players out of the lineup, but surely JJ Redick will want something a little better on Sunday. It's been a mantra for JJ Redick since the Lakers lost Game 5 against the Timberwolves in the first round of last year's playoffs—everyone needs to come back with championship level fitness. At the time, while people certainly applied it to the team at large, it was also seen as a message for Luka Dončić. To whatever extent it was, it's pretty clear Luka took the message to heart, given what he did with his body this offseason. But the Summer of Luka hasn't done anything to change Redick's emphasis on fitness as the Lakers have entered training camp. Wednesday's practice ended with a bleep-ton of sprinting. But the fitness kick isn't cosmetic. The Lakers have lost a lot of games, particularly playoff games, late in fourth quarters over the last couple of years. That's physical fatigue, potentially, but it's also mental. Defensive communication gets less robust, decision-making and execution suffer offensively. The Lakers aren't going to build more depth than the Thunder, or likely the Nuggets. They are an upper tier team in the West, but need to find any edge they can. Any way possible to boost their ceiling. That can be fitness, and the ability to execute through fatigue. Meanwhile, the Lakers are kicking off the preseason slate of games tonight out in the desert against the Suns. LeBron James and Marcus Smart won't play, but there will still be plenty to watch. The Lakers open the preseason on Friday, and while there are plenty of issues to work out, and plenty of time to do it, it's not too early to get a feel for what the rotation could look like. Luka Dončić and LeBron James (who won't play Friday, but was doing individual drills on Wednesday) give the Lakers a ton of flexibility, based on having guard skills in forward bodies. Austin Reaves provides obvious guard skills as well. So that means JJ Redick can deploy his other assets creatively. Asked about the guard rotation Wednesday, there were two notable things -- first, he included Jake LaRavia in that group. LaRavia has played some shooting guard, but generally is seen as a forward. And then he didn't mention Dalton Knecht. That indicates Knecht has some work to do before he can crack the regular rotation, and it probably means the Lakers have real plans for LaRavia, even if it's smart not to get too hung up on positional designations. It also leaves a lot of room for frontcourt guys to have rotation minutes, especially Jarred Vanderbilt. Vando has been in and out of the lineup for the last couple of seasons, and has had very little opportunity to develop consistency in his play. Given the amount of energy and physicality he plays with, Vanderbilt really needs good health to perform. Right now, he has it. Vando talked about it on Media Day, Redick noted it Wednesday after practice. So what does a healthy Vanderbilt mean for the Lakers? After a really fun first day of school (Media Day) the Lakers got down to work on Tuesday, and some of the shine came off the apple fairly quickly. Why? Health. First, LeBron James sat out with what JJ Redick described as "a little bit of nerve irritation in the glute." It's something the Lakers are obviously going to be careful with, and that could keep James on the sidelines for the full slate of preseason games as the Lakers work him through a "little bit longer" ramp up to the regular season opener on October 21st. The Lakers were likely to treat James carefully anyway through training camp, given his always high level of fitness and the fact he's entering his 23rd season. There is no indication yet he's in danger of missing the start of the regular season. Nevertheless, Lakers fans are going to be nervous about this, and it's totally reasonable. The vibes with Marcus Smart aren't too much better. He isn't practicing yet because of tendinopathy in his left Achilles, an ailment that if nothing else sounds kinda scary. Gabe Vincent is nursing knee soreness, and likely won't be cleared until next week. So are the Lakers in the danger zone yet? Hardly. But it's always better to start with everyone on the floor, and they can't do that. One guy who is playing? Deandre Ayton, who was frank and highly self-aware in his time talking to the media Monday. Monday was the official start of the 2025-26 Lakers season, as Media Day hit El Segundo. It was a low key, mellow affair, with no drama to speak of, and little news to be made. This is a good thing, of course. Luka Dončić came to camp with a new contract in hand, and had very little to say that hadn't been said already. LeBron James put to bed any sense of dissatisfaction, showing serious enthusiasm and excitement for the upcoming season, even while avoiding (no surprise) any firm commitments about what his future holds. Rui Hachimura? No grumbling about starting vs. coming off the bench. Same with Marcus Smart. Deandre Ayton made it clear he fully understands and appreciates the stakes of this season. Will he follow through? We'll see, but early returns are positive. Austin Reaves? Ready to go. Bronny? Happy with his growth, and looking forward to more. Jaxson Hayes put on 20 pounds of muscle, which probably can't hurt. And so on and so forth. If you watched it on TV, you probably learned that JJ Redick has a performance coach. It's finally here, people! The 2025-26 season for the LA Lakers kicks off today with Media Day. In less than a week, the Lakers will be playing preseason games. And while they don't open as favorites in the West, the Lakers definitely do open with the expectation of being very good, and should be a fun team to watch. It is, in the eyes of many, the true beginning of the Luka Dončić era in Los Angeles. It's his first Media Day in a Lakers uniform, his first time taking the photos and taping all the goofy stuff they play on the Jumbotron. There are critical questions about JJ Redick, entering his second season. What has he learned? How can he improve, especially given the contract extension granted him by the Lakers in the offseason. What about LeBron James? Will he put at least some of the speculation to bed, insofar as it pertains to his relationship with the Lakers and his excitement for the season? And, of course, there will be questions for Rui Hachimura about his future in Los Angeles. Right now, he's on an expiring deal. Asked about it last week, Rob Pelinka implied that the Lakers and Hachimura might be working on an extension. But then again, they might not. And signing him creates some complications. But one thing is definitely true: The Lakers like Rui, and love how he's developed as a Laker. Whether that translates to a long term future here, or a resolution to his future that comes before next offseason, remains to be seen. The Lakers braintrust met the media on Thursday ahead of next week's kickoff of training camp. As is his custom, Rob Pelinka opened with a sort of state of the union. Talked about the positive summer, the excitement of new acquisitions, and of course the amazing Summer of Luka. And then he dropped the big piece of news, almost as a throwaway line at the end: Earlier in the offseason, the Lakers gave head coach JJ Redick a contract extension. That's after one year of his coaching career (let alone his Lakers career) and with three years remaining in the contract that he signed last year. It's a remarkable leap of faith in a guy with a short track record, who was not in line for this kind of consideration at this point. Nobody was talking about whether Redick would get an extension yet. Frank Vogel got a fake extension (only one year) after winning an NBA championship. So yeah, it's an indication the Lakers are very, very confident in Redick. It also means the Lakers have real continuity going forward. With their star (Luka Dončić) their GM (Rob Pelinka, who also got an extension recently) and now their coach. That level of predictability is critical for building a program, including attracting not only star players, but also role playing free agents that have a huge impact on a roster. Meanwhile, Pelinka made it clear the Lakers would like for LeBron James to finish his career in purple and gold. No question, Pelinka gave James plenty of space and deference to make his own choice when the time comes, but was pretty clear in framing the desire to bring him back, should James decide to keep playing next year.
