Locked On Cyclones - Daily Podcast on Iowa State Cyclones Football & Basketball

The Associated Press college football poll, while a beloved tradition, is fundamentally flawed by its subjective and often uncritical voting process. The poll, comprised of sportswriters and broadcasters, is supposed to reflect a national consensus on the top teams, but it frequently falls victim to voter bias, regionalism, and a lack of in-depth game film study. This systemic problem creates a self-fulfilling prophecy where established, big-name programs are given the benefit of the doubt, while underdog teams from outside the traditional power conferences or who don't have a national following are left to prove themselves week after week with little room for error. A recent, glaring example of this flaw was the controversy surrounding voter Haley Sawyer. After the University of South Florida (USF) upset the Florida Gators, Sawyer's ballot not only moved the Gators up the rankings, but it omitted USF entirely. In a subsequent video, she offered a flimsy defense of her decisions, which only highlighted the core issue: some voters simply do not care about the poll, and potentially may not even watch the games. For a team like Iowa State, this problem is especially acute. As a member of the Big 12, the Cyclones are already at a disadvantage in terms of media exposure compared to teams in the SEC or Big Ten. Without a constant spotlight, the team's only path to poll respect is through consistent wins, which become even more difficult given the Big 12's propensity for "cannibalization," where good teams beat up on each other. When a voter fails to properly evaluate game outcomes, it directly harms teams like Iowa State by perpetuating the idea that they are not worthy of national attention, regardless of their performance. It's easy to look at Iowa State's early schedule and dismiss their success. After all, the wins have come against teams that aren't exactly setting the world on fire. Critics might point to a low-scoring victory over a struggling Iowa team, a close contest with a Kansas State squad that hasn't found its rhythm, or a win over an FCS opponent in South Dakota that lost to Lamar. This perspective, however, misses the forest for the trees. The real story isn't about the quality of the opponents; it's about the quality of the Cyclones' play in each of those games. The matchup against Iowa was a classic defensive slugfest, but Iowa State's victory was a testament to their own stout defense and unwavering resilience. They held Iowa's ground game in check and made critical plays in the fourth quarter, demonstrating the kind of grit needed to win tight, intense rivalries. Against South Dakota and Kansas State, Iowa State showcased a different, more dominant performance. The offense was balanced and efficient, while the defense continued to be a brick wall, stifling opponents’ efforts to score.A truly good team doesn't just win; it wins with authority and adapts to its competition. The Cyclones have done both. They've showcased the ability to win ugly, grind-it-out games, and they've shown they can dominate when given the opportunity. This level of consistency and adaptability proves that Iowa State is a legitimate contender. Their on-field performance is the most reliable evidence of their strength, suggesting they can hang with and even defeat any team they face this season, regardless of their opponents' perceived quality after the game is over. The Cyclones’ thrilling 16-13 victory over the Hawkeyes in the Cy-Hawk rivalry game was a testament to their resilience and Matt Campbell’s program-building. Despite securing their second consecutive win in the series, the Cyclones' performance revealed several areas for improvement. While the offense ultimately made the plays to set up the game-winning field goal, the decision to temporarily pull starting quarterback Rocco Becht seemed to disrupt the team’s rhythm and momentum in a game where offensive consistency was already scarce.Special teams also presented a mixed bag of results. The clutch, 54-yard field goal by Kyle Konrardy was a highlight and secured the win, yet an earlier muffed punt return gave Iowa a short field that led to their first points. These moments highlight how crucial—and at times, fragile—special teams play can be, even with a star kicker. Finally, while the defense made key stops in the end, the defensive line struggled at times to generate consistent pressure on Iowa's quarterback, Mark Gronowski. This allowed the Hawkeyes to orchestrate a few lengthy, time-consuming drives that nearly cost the Cyclones the game. Though the win was sweet, addressing these issues will be critical for Iowa State as they navigate the rest of their schedule. The victory over Iowa moved the Cyclones to a 3-0 record, a promising start to the season. While the win was hard-fought and demonstrates the team's grit, the areas of improvement mentioned above will be crucial to address. As they progress through their schedule, only time will tell if they can refine these elements and truly become a dangerous team capable of competing for a Big 12 title and making noise on the national stage. The sun set on a perfect day for Iowa State football, as the Cyclones triumphed over the Hawkeyes in a hard-fought Cy-Hawk rivalry game. The victory was a testament to a complete team effort, showcasing a dominant performance on both sides of the ball. The Iowa State offense was relentless, moving the ball with precision and balance. The offensive line created massive running lanes, and the quarterbacks delivered timely, accurate passes that kept the Hawkeye defense on its heels throughout the afternoon. Every drive seemed to end with points, a clear sign of an offense clicking on all cylinders. While the offense put on a show, the defense was arguably the star of the game. They played with intensity and discipline, consistently pressuring the Iowa quarterback and stuffing the run. Key turnovers and crucial stops in the red zone prevented the Hawkeyes from ever gaining momentum. This defensive masterpiece solidified the team's identity as a formidable force. The game’s true hero, however, was without question kicker Kyle Konrardy. His foot was automatic, drilling every kick with confidence and precision. Whether it was an extra point or a clutch field goal from distance, Konrardy delivered. His performance solidified his status as one of the best kickers to ever play the game, a reliable weapon the team can always count on. This victory is a phenomenal start to the season, providing the Cyclones with a massive boost of confidence as they begin their quest for the Big 12 Championship once again. The bitter rivalry between Iowa State and Iowa is often a battle of wills, but in this clash, the Cyclones are poised to seize control from the first snap. While the Hawkeye defense is perennially praised, it's the unyielding Iowa State defense that will be the true difference-maker, suffocating Iowa’s anemic offense. The Cyclone defensive line, a relentless force in the trenches, will apply constant pressure, forcing Iowa's quarterback into hurried throws and turnovers. With a disciplined secondary that blankets receivers and a linebacking corps that swarms to the ball, the Hawkeyes will find no room to operate. Every down will feel like a struggle, and Iowa will be unable to string together a single meaningful drive, ultimately failing to get on the scoreboard.Meanwhile, the Iowa State offense will not be burdened by the same struggles. The Cyclones will take advantage of the Hawkeyes' offensive woes, turning early turnovers into prime scoring opportunities. An explosive passing game, combined with a methodical ground attack, will wear down the Iowa defense. The Cyclones will strike early, establishing a dominant lead and building a momentum that will carry them throughout the game. With the defense holding the fort and the offense putting points on the board with confidence and efficiency, the Cyclones are set to dominate their rivals in a comprehensive and unforgettable victor. The annual rivalry between the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Iowa State Cyclones is often framed as a defensive slugfest, a low-scoring affair where every yard is hard-earned. However, this year’s matchup holds a different narrative for Iowa State. The Cyclones are not just looking to grind out a victory; they are positioned to light up the scoreboard, defying expectations of a defensive struggle and showcasing a potent, high-flying offense. The foundation for this offensive explosion rests on the shoulders of Offensive Coordinator Taylor Mouser and quarterback Rocco Becht. Mouser's strategic play-calling is set to be a masterclass, exploiting every gap and creating mismatches. Becht, the general on the field, will execute this vision with precision and composure. His ability to read the defense and deliver accurate passes will be critical to sustaining drives and turning red zone opportunities into touchdowns. The Cyclones also possess playmakers who can turn a good play into a great one. Tight end Benjamin Brahmer is a matchup nightmare, a reliable target who can move the chains and find the end zone. His size and hands make him a go-to option when the pressure is on. Running back Carson Hansen adds another dynamic layer, a versatile weapon who can contribute as both a runner and a receiver. His agility and vision will provide the offensive spark needed to convert key downs and extend scoring drives.Together, the combination of Mouser's tactical prowess and the on-field talent of Becht, Brahmer, and Hansen will be too much for the Hawkeyes' defense. While the pundits may predict a close, low-scoring game, Iowa State's offense is ready to prove them wrong, putting up a significant point total and securing a memorable victory in the rivalry. The ultimate Cy-Hawk game preview has arrived for one of college football's most intense in-state rivalries. This year's clash pits two programs built on toughness and identity, led by established coaches Kirk Ferentz and Matt Campbell. The spotlight shines on the quarterback matchup: Iowa State's Rocco Becht, known for his efficient passing, against Iowa's Mark Gronowski, a dual-threat who adds a new dimension to the Hawkeyes' offense after transferring from South Dakota State. This matchup is also a battle of coaching philosophies. Kirk Ferentz, now in his 27th season, is a steady, meticulous presence tied with Woody Hayes for the most wins as a Big Ten head coach. Matt Campbell, in his 10th year in Ames, has transformed the Cyclones into a consistent Big 12 contender, with a focus on discipline and development in the trenches. The keys to the game lie in the trenches, where both teams boast standout defensive lines and linebackers. Iowa's defense, a perennial powerhouse, will look to force turnovers and shut down the run game, a formula that has kept them in the top 20 nationally in scoring defense for a decade. Iowa State, with a positive turnover margin and a high-scoring offense, will aim to capitalize on any Hawkeye mistakes. Meanwhile, the Cyclones' offense has shown a potent ability to put up points, while the Hawkeyes rely on a punishing run game that put up over 300 yards in their opener. This game will add another chapter to the rivalry's storied history, which includes classic moments like the 2002 comeback led by Seneca Wallace and the 2011 triple-overtime thriller. With the road team winning the last five matchups in the series, a dramatic finish is expected in a rivalry that has produced close, low-scoring battles in seven of the last 13 meetings. Iowa State football fans have every reason to believe that quarterback Rocco Becht is the key to victory in the highly anticipated Cy-Hawk game. With Iowa State Cyclones football trending toward a new era of success, head coach Matt Campbell and his offensive staff are poised to unleash an offense that can counter Iowa's elite defense. This isn't just a friendly rivalry; it's a battle of grit. AsTaylor Mouser said, "The more we put on that guy's plate, the better he is. The easier we try to make it for him, for whatever reason, it's not. He's better with his back against the wall." This signals a deep trust and a strategic plan to put Becht in a position to win, believing that an aggressive, challenging game plan is precisely what the Cyclones need to come out on top. The narrative of this college football showdown is centered on Becht's growth and the strength of his supporting cast. The Cyclones’ prolific tight end room, featuring talents like Gabe Burkle and Benjamin Brahmer, gives Becht a powerful security blanket and a decisive advantage. The reliance on this group, as evidenced by their high volume of targets in recent games, will be a critical part of the game plan. The Iowa vs. Iowa State matchup will be a testament to the synergy between Becht’s leadership and the offensive staff's tight end-heavy scheme. This is more than just a game; it's a defining moment for Rocco Becht's legacy. The Iowa State Cyclones advanced to a perfect 2-0 record after a commanding performance against the South Dakota Coyotes. The victory was a testament to the team's burgeoning offensive prowess and a stalwart defensive effort. Quarterback Rocco Becht put on an unbelievable display, orchestrating the offense with a veteran's poise and precision that kept the Coyotes' defense reeling. His ability to hit targets downfield and convert critical third downs was a key factor in the Cyclones' sustained drives.Equally impressive was the performance of the tight ends, who showcased their versatility as both blockers and pass-catchers. They consistently created mismatches and proved to be reliable security blankets for Becht, highlighting their importance in the new-look offense. The special teams also made history, as kicker Kyle Konrardy delivered a career-defining moment with the longest field goal in Iowa State school history, a kick that brought the crowd to its feet. While the defense played exceptionally well, shutting down the South Dakota offense, it was clear they were aided by the fact that the Coyotes are an FCS opponent. The unit will face a much tougher test in the weeks ahead, but their performance was a promising sign of their potential. This win sets the stage for the Cyclones to build on their early season success and carry momentum into the heart of their schedule. The upcoming game between the Iowa State Cyclones and the South Dakota Coyotes is more than just a season opener; it's a test for two programs with high expectations. Coming off an impressive 11-3 season that saw them reach the FCS semifinals, South Dakota is a formidable opponent. They are led by their new head coach, Travis Johansen, who was promoted after serving as the team's defensive coordinator. He inherits a strong team with returning players like standout quarterback Aidan Bouman, a former Cyclone, who adds a compelling narrative to the matchup. For Iowa State, the game represents an opportunity to build on a historic 2024 season. Despite a challenging slate of injuries, the Cyclones achieved their first-ever double-digit win season and made a significant appearance in the Big 12 Championship. This year, with a core of returning players and an infusion of new talent, the team is poised to make another run at the conference title. Playing in the familiar environment of Jack Trice Stadium gives the Cyclones a considerable home-field advantage. However, with the game sandwiched between a rivalry win in Ireland and the upcoming Cy-Hawk game, the Cyclones must avoid a letdown against a highly motivated FCS team. This contest will be a true measure of both teams' readiness and resilience. Listener SurveyWe’ve put together a survey to learn more about our listeners and make your favorite podcasts even better. Iowa State’s gritty 24-21 victory over a tough Kansas State team last weekend was a significant moment for the program. The Cyclones opened their season in Dublin with a hard-fought win against a formidable opponent, demonstrating resilience and the ability to win close games. Quarterback Rocco Becht proved to be a dual threat, while the defense made key stops to secure the victory. Despite trailing for a time, Iowa State never gave up, showcasing the kind of mental toughness that has become a hallmark of Coach Matt Campbell's teams. Winning the third straight game against their in-state rival is a testament to the program's upward trajectory and validates their position as a top-25 team. However, a closer look at Coach Campbell’s comments following the game reveals a leader who is far from satisfied. He noted that the team "was not in the best rhythm in the first half" and acknowledged that the Cyclones gave up "four sacks," calling it "very uncharacteristic." His message was clear: a win is great, but the team's performance was far from perfect. Campbell’s comments were a challenge, not just to his team, but to the entire program. He emphasized that the "real result" will be how the team responds and grows from this experience in the coming weeks. For Campbell, the focus is not on the win itself, but on the potential for improvement. The contest proved to be a valuable learning experience. The Cyclones now have the opportunity to take the lessons from a difficult Week 1 matchup and apply them as the season progresses. By dissecting their mistakes and building on their successes against a quality opponent, Iowa State is in a prime position to get better every week. The win was a fantastic start, but the real test lies ahead in how they respond to their coach's call to play a lot better football. In an era of conference realignment and shifting loyalties, traditional rivalries are often the first casualty. This is the unfortunate reality for the "Farmageddon" rivalry between Iowa State and Kansas State. As highlighted on the College GameDay podcast with Rece Davis, there is a perception that the athletic directors, including Iowa State's Jamie Pollard and Kansas State's Gene Taylor, wish for the rivalry—and even its beloved nickname—to fade away. This sentiment became particularly evident when reports surfaced that the schools had asked ESPN to cease using the "Farmageddon" moniker. The decision not to protect this historic series, which has been played annually for over a century, is a detriment to college football as a whole. Rivalries are the lifeblood of the sport, fueling fan passion, local pride, and memorable moments that transcend a team's win-loss record. By allowing a rivalry with such deep roots and a dedicated fanbase to disappear from the annual schedule, the Big 12 Conference and the two schools undermine the very traditions that make college football so special. Furthermore, the perceived disinterest from athletic leadership in preserving this matchup signals a prioritization of corporate scheduling over fan engagement and historical significance, leaving a proud tradition to wither on the vine. While a quarterback's stat line often dominates the conversation, the true measure of a great player is their ability to perform in the moments that matter most. This was perfectly demonstrated by Iowa State's Rocco Becht in their victory against Kansas State. Although his stats—14-for-28 for 183 yards and two touchdowns—may not jump off the page, they fail to capture the full picture of his performance. His ability to make clutch plays under pressure proved he is one of the best quarterbacks in the Big 12 and capable of leading the Cyclones to a championship game.Facing a gritty, defensive-minded team, Becht didn't rely on flashy numbers; he relied on execution. He led the team on a key touchdown drive in the third quarter, giving the Cyclones a lead they would never relinquish. More importantly, with the game on the line late in the fourth quarter, he converted a crucial fourth-and-three to seal the victory. This final play demonstrated not only his composure but also the trust his coach and teammates have in him.Becht's performance against Kansas State wasn't just about his arm; it was about his leadership and mental toughness. He managed the game, avoided turnovers, and, when the moment called for it, delivered a decisive blow. This is the kind of play that wins championships, and it is a clear sign that Rocco Becht has what it takes to lead Iowa State to a Big 12 title game. Following a hard-fought victory over Kansas State in Dublin, Ireland, the Iowa State Cyclones have emerged as legitimate contenders for the Big 12 Championship. While some observers remain skeptical, the team's performance in its season opener demonstrated a level of execution in key areas that is necessary for a championship run. The win was not a fluke, but rather a testament to the Cyclones' strengths, particularly their commanding play at quarterback, in the backfield, and along the defensive line. The quarterback, Rocco Becht, was a model of poise under pressure, making crucial throws and demonstrating a clutch rushing ability to extend drives and score touchdowns. His performance was particularly impactful in the fourth quarter when the game was on the line. Complementing his effort, the running back group, led by Carson Hansen, proved to be a powerful and physical force. Despite a slow start, the running backs took over late in the game, wearing down the Kansas State defense with a bruising style that sealed the victory. This strong ground game is a critical asset that allows the offense to control the tempo. On the other side of the ball, the defensive line was a relentless, disruptive presence. They consistently pressured Kansas State's quarterback, forcing rushed throws and limiting the Wildcats' ability to establish a rhythm. This dominance in the trenches allowed the rest of the defense to shine, holding a talented offense in check and creating the stops needed to win a close game. With this level of play from its most important units, Iowa State has provided a compelling argument for its place at the top of the Big 12. The world of college sports is a thrilling blend of talent and strategy, but a key factor that often dictates success is the health of a team's roster. For a program like the Iowa State Cyclones, managing the injury report is a critical part of the season. The physical demands of the game can sideline key players, forcing coaches and staff to constantly adapt their game plan and rely on depth. This isn't just about who's playing, but about the resilience of the team as a whole. This season's Iowa State football team, for instance, has had to contend with a significant number of players listed as out or questionable heading into their opening game. A major concern is the offensive line, where a potential starter like Trevor Buhr is sidelined. This kind of injury can disrupt a team’s rhythm and put pressure on younger players to step into crucial roles. Similarly, the questionable status of players like Daniel Jackson and Alijah Carnell means that the offensive and defensive schemes may need to be adjusted on the fly, testing the team’s flexibility.Ultimately, the injury report is more than just a list of names; it's a narrative of adversity and determination. It tells a story of players working to return to the field and a coaching staff finding ways to win despite the challenges. For the Cyclones, navigating these setbacks will be essential to their success, and it will give fans a chance to see the true character of this team as they fight to overcome the odds. The Big 12 Conference has become synonymous with offensive fireworks, and a matchup between Iowa State and Kansas State promises to be no exception. Both teams are led by elite quarterbacks and feature dynamic playmakers at the skill positions, creating a perfect storm for a high-scoring affair. However, despite the potential for an offensive explosion, this game is poised to be a classic Big 12 nail-biter, with the final outcome likely decided by a single score. For Iowa State, the success of their offense hinges on the continued high-end play of their quarterback. He has proven to be a cerebral player who can effectively distribute the ball to his weapons. With a stable of talented tight ends and a group of wide receivers with significant potential, the Cyclones' passing game is a difficult unit to contain. Their ability to work the middle of the field with their tight ends and stretch the defense with their emerging receivers creates constant matchup problems for any opposing secondary.Across the field, Kansas State boasts an equally potent offense. Their quarterback is one of the most explosive players in the entire conference, equally dangerous with his arm and his legs. Flanked by good wide receivers and tight ends, the Wildcats have the offensive talent to go score-for-score with Iowa State. This parity in offensive firepower is precisely why the game is likely to be a shootout. The true deciding factor in this contest will come down to which team's defense can make a game-changing play. With so much talent on offense, the defenses will face a relentless challenge. The outcome will be determined not by offensive might, but by a clutch interception, a crucial sack, or a red-zone stand. In the end, the team that manages to get just one more stop than the other will emerge victorious in what is sure to be a thrilling, close contest. The Iowa State football program's depth chart should provide a great deal of comfort and optimism for Cyclone fans. While the team has often relied on a small group of standout players in the past, the current roster reflects a fundamental shift towards deep, top-tier talent at every position. This isn't just a handful of stars; it's a collective, and it answers a lot of the lingering questions about the program's long-term sustainability and ability to compete at the highest level.Looking at the two-deep, it's clear that the Cyclones have a healthy mix of seasoned veterans, highly-touted young recruits, and impactful transfers. Returning starters provide invaluable experience and leadership, while players who have been developing in the program are now ready to step into significant roles. This internal development, combined with strategic additions from the transfer portal, has created a competitive environment that pushes everyone to be better. The result is a roster where the talent gap between the first and second string is shrinking. This depth is the program's greatest strength. When injuries inevitably occur or players need a breather, the coaching staff can turn to a talented backup who is ready to perform. This ensures that the team can maintain a high level of play throughout the season, weathering adversity and avoiding the kind of drop-off that has hindered past teams. The depth chart is a testament to the program's successful culture, and it’s a clear signal that the future of Cyclone football is in great hands. In college football, a defense's success is often simplistically measured by its ability to generate sacks, as if a high number automatically signals a dominant unit. However, for a team like Iowa State, this viewpoint misses the core of their defensive philosophy. Under coach Matt Campbell, the Cyclones’ defense deliberately de-emphasizes the sack as the ultimate metric, instead focusing on a more foundational statistic: points allowed. This strategic choice is not a sign of a passive defense, but rather a calculated effort to win games by prioritizing containment and coverage over a frantic, undisciplined pass rush.Campbell and his staff believe that a defense is defined not by how many times it gets to the quarterback, but by how few points it gives up. As he states in the press conference, "points scored in the game is certainly a more worthy, measurable statistic than sacks in a football game." This perspective is particularly relevant in a conference like the Big 12, which is known for its mobile quarterbacks. A defense that overcommits to getting a sack can leave itself vulnerable to a scrambling quarterback who can extend a play or even run for a first down. By focusing on keeping the quarterback contained and forcing him to make a throw into tight coverage, the Cyclones are playing a smarter, more disciplined brand of football. This philosophy places a higher value on collective team effort than on individual stat lines. While a sack is a great "big play opportunity," Campbell sees it as a situational statistic that doesn't define overall defensive success. The true measure is the unit's ability to consistently get off the field on third down through good coverage, whether or not a sack is part of the equation. This systematic approach is what has allowed Iowa State's defense to be consistently among the top in the Big 12 in points allowed, proving that you don't have to lead in sacks to have a winning defense.By prioritizing winning football games over a single, often skewed, statistic like sacks, Iowa State's defensive strategy is not a liability. It is a fundamental, well-executed approach designed to achieve the ultimate goal: success on the scoreboard. The Big 12 Conference's new mandate for public injury reports marks a pivotal shift in collegiate athletics, affecting team strategy, player safety, and the college sports fan experience. Following other Power Four conferences, the Big 12 will now release daily football injury updates and pre-game reports for men’s and women’s basketball. This increased transparency will fundamentally change how coaches prepare, moving away from gamesmanship and toward a more data-driven approach based on verified opponent information. For players, this policy could reduce harassment from gamblers seeking inside information. For fans, the impact is immense. Previously, accessing timely NCAA injury news was a challenge, forcing enthusiasts to rely on speculative reports. Now, fans engaged in fantasy football or tracking NCAAB betting will have access to official, standardized information, much like in professional leagues. This aligns the college game more closely with the mainstream appeal of sports gambling. Ultimately, the new rule creates a more transparent viewing environment, ensuring fans have the necessary details to make informed predictions and enhancing the overall accessibility and integrity of the sports they follow. The decision to start a true freshman quarterback, such as BYU's Bear Bachmeier, is a high-stakes gamble that will face an early and formidable test against a potentially historic Iowa State team. While the promise of a young, talented player can invigorate a program, the Big 12 is an unforgiving landscape where inexperience is often exploited. A true freshman quarterback must quickly acclimate to the speed and complexity of the college game, a task made exponentially more difficult by facing a seasoned, well-coached defense.Iowa State, led by defensive coordinator Jon Heacock, has historically fielded stout defenses that thrive on confusing young passers. Their 3-3-5 scheme, which utilizes a variety of pressures and coverage disguises, is a puzzle even for veteran quarterbacks. For a freshman like Bachmeier, this aggressive and unorthodox approach could be overwhelming, forcing hurried decisions and creating turnover opportunities. Moreover, if Iowa State is indeed "the strongest they have ever been," as the prompt suggests, their veteran defensive front and secondary could capitalize on any freshman jitters or misreads, disrupting the offensive rhythm and stifling BYU's ability to move the ball.Ultimately, while the future may be bright for a talented young quarterback, the present reality of facing a disciplined and physical Iowa State team presents a significant hurdle. This matchup will be a true trial by fire, and the challenges posed by a veteran-led team could lead to early struggles for the Cougars, proving that talent alone is not always enough in college football. Iowa State's offensive coordinator, Taylor Mouser, has expressed strong confidence in the team's wide receiver room, viewing it as one of the best he's seen despite losing key playmakers. This belief, however, is not in isolation. It's part of a broader picture of offensive synergy that could lead to great success for the Cyclones. The foundation of this success begins with the offensive line, which returns 106 combined starts, providing a veteran presence and critical protection for quarterback Rocco Becht.Becht himself is a significant factor. He's a proven leader and a record-setting quarterback, having been named to the Davey O'Brien Award watch list and led the team to its winningest season ever in 2024. His ability to extend plays and make clutch decisions, combined with the offensive line's stability, gives the new wide receivers time to get open and make plays. Furthermore, the running back room, featuring the talented duo of Carson Hansen and Abu Sama III, offers a potent one-two punch. Hansen's power and Sama's speed provide a formidable ground game that will prevent defenses from focusing solely on the passing attack. This balance will open up new opportunities for Mouser's versatile receivers and allow the entire offense to thrive. The combination of a veteran quarterback, a strong offensive line, a dynamic running back room, and a deep group of wide receivers gives Iowa State a cohesive and dangerous offense heading into the season. The decision of Iowa State and the Big 12 Conference to schedule non-conference football games should prioritize strategic advantage over perceived prestige. A less challenging early-season schedule is, in fact, the most prudent approach for the conference and its teams, offering four distinct benefits. Firstly, the College Football Playoff committee often downplays the significance of early-season losses, a fact that can be exploited by securing victories against less-heralded opponents. These games are frequently eclipsed by later conference matchups, making early losses easily forgotten by the time rankings are finalized.Secondly, if these losses are not forgotten, the Big 12 is often subjected to an unfair double standard. A loss by a Big 12 team to a formidable non-conference opponent is frequently held against them more harshly than a similar loss by a team from another Power Five conference. This unequal treatment makes taking on high-risk opponents a disadvantage with little to no upside.Furthermore, a difficult non-conference schedule disproportionately benefits a small number of top-tier programs while harming the conference's overall depth. By scheduling easier games, more teams have a realistic path to bowl eligibility. This broadens the conference's representation in the postseason and enhances its collective standing, rather than concentrating success among just a few teams. Finally, these early-season games provide a crucial opportunity for teams to manage player fatigue. Starters can be given a lighter workload, allowing them to remain fresh and healthy for the grueling conference schedule that determines a team's championship and bowl game fate. For these reasons, the Big 12 and Iowa State should continue their current scheduling philosophy, prioritizing a path to success over the risky pursuit of non-conference notoriety. This depth is not merely about numbers but about quality, ensuring that the Cyclones possess multiple talented options capable of stepping up when needed. Such a roster mitigates the impact of injuries and allows for specialized packages, giving the coaching staff unparalleled flexibility.Beyond individual talent, the team's current mindset is a critical factor. Campbell noted the exceptional intensity at practice, stating that if players don't "bring it," they will be exposed. This speaks volumes about the competitive environment within the program. The sheer talent and skill level of the current roster mean that every player must perform at their peak daily, fostering a culture of relentless improvement. The preseason coaches poll, a traditional measure of expectations, has delivered a clear message to the Iowa State Cyclones: you are not getting the respect you deserve. The team’s ranking at No. 21 is a complete oversight, a slight that dismisses their recent success and the overall strength of the Big 12 Conference. Coming off an impressive 11-3 season and a significant bowl victory, the Cyclones have more than earned a place higher on the list. The ranking seems to overlook their consistent performance, as well as the talent and depth returning to the program. This disrespect is not just aimed at Iowa State; it’s a reflection of a persistent bias against the Big 12. Despite being a conference with five teams in the preseason top 25—including Arizona State, Kansas State, BYU, and Texas Tech—the pollsters have undervalued its top contenders. This narrative is all too familiar, with media and coaches polls consistently underestimating the conference's competitive fire.Fortunately, the Cyclones are in a perfect position to prove everyone wrong. They begin the season with a conference showdown against No. 20 Kansas State, an immediate opportunity to make a statement and showcase their true potential. This season, Iowa State will not just compete—they will serve as a powerful reminder that the Big 12 is a premier football conference that will demand its due respect through on-field dominance. In an era of unprecedented change and financial flux in college football, Matt Campbell's recent contract extension with Iowa State stands as a testament to a different kind of success—one built on culture and shared purpose. While he received a substantial raise, reports indicate Campbell took a "discount" to ensure a greater portion of the university's resources could be allocated to his coaching staff and a new revenue-sharing fund for players. This selfless act, prioritizing the collective over personal gain, makes him not only an elite leader but arguably the greatest coach in the new-look Big 12.Campbell's decision is a profound statement about his long-term commitment to the Iowa State program. It signals to potential recruits, current players, and the entire fanbase that he isn't simply a stepping stone to a more lucrative job. By directing funds to his staff, he fosters continuity and loyalty, ensuring the program's foundation remains stable. By advocating for his players through revenue sharing, he demonstrates that their well-being and financial future are as important as any victory on the field. This action builds an unparalleled level of trust and buy-in, creating a culture where players are willing to take pay cuts to stay and compete for a championship. This unique approach to leadership is a competitive advantage that money can't buy. In a sport defined by roster turnover and the allure of bigger contracts, Campbell has shown that he is here to stay, building a legacy at Iowa State that will endure far beyond any single season. The annual "Farmageddon" rivalry between Iowa State and Kansas State has a rich history, but its ranking at 63rd on a recent list of the top college football rivalries was a collective slap in the face to both programs. Such a low position suggests a lack of national respect, diminishing the passion of a series that has produced classic games and dramatic finishes. This ranking undermines the pride of two fan bases and does a disservice to the players who pour their hearts into this fiercely contested Big 12 matchup. However, a monumental opportunity awaits. In a rare Week 0 showcase, Iowa State and Kansas State will open their seasons against each other in Dublin, Ireland, a stage that guarantees the eyes of the entire college football world. This isn't just a season opener; it's a chance for the rivalry to prove its worth and demand the recognition it deserves. On a global stage, with no other marquee games to compete with, the Cyclones and Wildcats can deliver a performance that transcends their #63 ranking. A hard-fought, high-stakes battle will not only give the winner a crucial early-season boost but also remind everyone that some of the best rivalries in the sport are defined not by national polls, but by the fire on the field. Last season, Becht put up impressive numbers, throwing for 3,505 yards and 25 touchdowns. However, a significant portion of that production went to now-departed NFL-bound receivers Jaylin Noel and Jayden Higgins, who combined for 167 catches, 2,377 yards, and 17 touchdowns. This reliance, while effective, could have inadvertently limited Becht's full development.Without the safety net of defaulting to his established top targets, Becht will be compelled to progress through his reads more thoroughly and distribute the ball across a broader array of receivers, including new transfers like Chase Sowell and Xavier Townsend, and promising tight ends such as Benjamin Brahmer and Gabe Burkle. This forced diversification will hone his decision-making, improve his field vision, and ultimately foster greater poise under pressure. As quarterbacks coach Jake Waters noted, Becht is actively working on "processing, getting through reads, things like that where he can take another step." This growth in fundamental quarterbacking will make him a more complete and unpredictable passer.Iowa State, returning nine starters on offense and with a strong defensive unit, is already seen as an intriguing contender, with Big 12 championship odds around +1200. Becht's enhanced ability to navigate complex defensive schemes and trust his entire receiving corps will make the Cyclones' offense more dynamic and less susceptible to being shut down by simply neutralizing one or two players. This maturation from Becht could be the critical factor that pushes Iowa State from a strong contender to a legitimate Big 12 champion. Iowa State's upcoming football season hinges significantly on the prowess of its defense, which appears poised to carry the team to more victories than the offense. While the offense boasts returning talent, the defensive unit, particularly the defensive line and linebackers, has undergone a transformative improvement from last year. The defensive line, often a cornerstone of Jon Heacock's scheme, is set to be "completely different" according to coach Matt Campbell. Key returners like Domonique Orange and Ikenna Ezeogu are expected to take on larger roles, complemented by impactful transfers such as Yale's Tamatoa McDonough, who led the Ivy League in sacks, and Tulsa's Vontroy Malone. This infusion of talent and experience promises a more disruptive and effective pass rush, a notable area for improvement from the previous season.Equally impactful is the resurgence of the linebacker corps. Plagued by injuries in 2024, the unit returns largely healthy and with valuable in-game experience gained by younger players forced into action. Coach Campbell has expressed high praise, stating the linebacker room looks "as good as I've ever seen it." This depth and renewed health will allow the defensive line to play more vertically, creating a synergistic effect that amplifies the entire front seven's ability to stifle opposing offenses. With a stout run defense, an improving pass rush, and a deep, healthy linebacker group, Iowa State's defense is primed to be a top unit in the Big 12. Their ability to consistently limit opponents' scoring and generate turnovers will undoubtedly be the primary driver of wins, compensating for any potential growing pains on the offensive side of the ball. The recent announcements of Rocco Becht's inclusion on the Maxwell Award preseason watch list, alongside the recognition of two Iowa State defensive backs, Jeremiah Cooper and Jontez Williams, on the Jim Thorpe Award watch list, serve as powerful testaments to a growing trust in the Iowa State football program. These prestigious nominations are not merely individual accolades; they collectively signal a broader belief in the team's potential and a promising outlook for the upcoming season.Becht's nod for the Maxwell Award, honoring the nation's top collegiate player, underscores the confidence in his leadership and ability to guide the Cyclones' offense. It suggests expectations of a high-performing unit capable of making significant strides. Similarly, the dual presence of Iowa State defensive backs on the Jim Thorpe Award watch list, an award for the best defensive back, highlights the elite talent and depth within the Cyclones' secondary. This recognition speaks volumes about their defensive prowess and the potential to shut down opposing offenses.Such widespread national attention, particularly for key players on both sides of the ball, indicates that Iowa State is no longer an underdog but a legitimate contender. This external validation fosters internal belief and momentum. With a strong foundation of talent and the trust placed in them by national award committees, the Cyclones are poised for a truly great season, ready to exceed expectations and compete at the highest level. The recent decision to cancel the Hilton Coliseum renovation project casts a dark shadow over the future of Iowa State athletics, strongly suggesting that the financial concerns voiced by Athletic Director Jamie Pollard earlier this year are far more serious than initially perceived. This halt in a crucial infrastructure upgrade is not merely a postponement but a stark indicator of significant budgetary constraints impacting the department's ability to invest in its facilities. Modern, competitive facilities are vital for recruiting top talent, enhancing the fan experience, and generating revenue. Without these planned improvements, Iowa State risks falling behind peer institutions, potentially hindering its long-term competitiveness across various sports. The cancellation underscores a precarious financial situation that could limit future strategic investments, player development, and overall program growth, making it a genuinely troubling sign for the trajectory of Cyclone athletics.Meanwhile, the Iowa State football team, under the leadership of head coach Matt Campbell, recently held its media availability, offering a glimpse into the upcoming season. Campbell, known for his consistent approach and ability to develop talent, addressed the media with his characteristic blend of optimism and realism. Discussions likely centered on key returning players, the integration of new recruits, and the team's readiness for the challenges of the Big 12 conference. Despite the broader athletic department's financial headwinds, the football program remains a focal point, with fans eagerly anticipating how Campbell's squad will perform following their preparations and recent interactions with the press. The Iowa State Cyclones' linebacker room is poised to be the decisive factor in their season-opening clash against Kansas State. Heading into the new campaign, the unit boasts an exceptional blend of returning talent from injury and battle-tested depth, creating a formidable defensive core that could swing the momentum in Iowa State's favor.Last season saw key linebackers like Caleb Bacon, John Klosterman, and Will McLaughlin sidelined due to injury. While their absence was felt, it inadvertently provided invaluable experience to their replacements. These players, thrust into significant roles, gained crucial reps and developed a deeper understanding of the defensive scheme and the speed of collegiate football. This unexpected "trial by fire" has forged a more resilient and versatile group. Now, with Bacon, Klosterman, and McLaughlin expected to return to full strength, Iowa State will benefit from a wealth of high-end skill and unparalleled depth at the position. The combination of seasoned veterans and newly experienced players creates a dynamic rotation capable of maintaining relentless pressure and adapting to Kansas State's offensive schemes. This depth ensures that fresh legs and high-level talent are consistently on the field, minimizing fatigue and maximizing defensive efficiency. It's this potent mix of returning stars and hardened backups that will ultimately secure a crucial early-season victory for the Cyclones. The ongoing evolution of the College Football Playoff (CFP) format has sparked considerable debate, particularly regarding its implications for various conferences. Commissioner Tony Petitti's proposed 4-4-2-2-1 model, while seemingly offering a guaranteed pathway for more leagues, presents a nuanced disadvantage for conferences like the Big 12, and by extension, teams such as Iowa State.Under the 4-4-2-2-1 structure, which allocates four automatic bids to the top four conference champions, followed by a tiered selection process, the Big 12 would indeed secure a guaranteed slot. However, this guarantee comes at a potential cost: a reduced opportunity for multiple teams from the same conference to qualify. For a league striving for broader representation, this format could be limiting.Contrast this with a "5+11" model, often discussed as a potential alternative, which would likely allow for five automatic qualifiers and eleven at-large bids. Such a structure would significantly increase the chances of a strong Big 12, even if its champion isn't among the absolute elite, to place several teams into the expanded playoff field. Iowa State, for instance, a program that consistently competes for top-tier finishes within the Big 12, would find its path to the playoff more accessible as a strong at-large contender under a "5+11" system, even if they don't win the conference title. While the 4-4-2-2-1 model ensures a presence, it paradoxically constrains the Big 12's overall playoff footprint, making it less advantageous for the conference to maximize its representation compared to a more open at-large heavy format. The recent news of Marcus Zelee's decommitment from Iowa State basketball might, at first glance, appear to be a setback. However, a deeper look reveals that this development, paradoxically, underscores the burgeoning strength and premier status of the Iowa State program. Rather than a negative reflection, Zelee's initial swift decision speaks volumes about the appeal of Ames.Consider the timeline: Marcus Zelee accepted his offer within a mere 48 hours of Iowa State extending it. This wasn't a drawn-out deliberation or a cautious weighing of options. This was an immediate, enthusiastic embrace of the opportunity. Such a rapid commitment from a talented prospect is a clear indicator that Iowa State is not just a viable option, but a highly desirable destination. It demonstrates that the program, under its current leadership, has cultivated a reputation so strong that recruits instantly recognize its value and potential. This instant attraction suggests that Iowa State basketball has ascended to a level where it is considered a top-tier program by recruits. They don't need extensive convincing; the allure of playing for the Cyclones in Ames is self-evident. Furthermore, this decommitment, while unexpected, opens up a valuable scholarship spot, allowing the coaching staff to strategically pursue a player who might be an even better fit for the team's long-term vision or a prospect with a more solidified commitment. This flexibility can ultimately strengthen the roster. While decommitments are an unfortunate reality in college recruiting, the initial fervor with which Zelee chose Iowa State is a powerful testament to the program's undeniable appeal and growing prominence on the national stage. It reinforces that Iowa State is indeed a premier program, capable of attracting high-caliber talent with immediate impact. However, the program should also view this as a potential warning sign, prompting an internal review of factors that might lead to future decommitments, especially concerning larger commitments where Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) considerations could play an increasingly significant role. The Big 12 Conference's decision to not extend an invitation to Memphis, despite their persistent efforts, was a strategic move that ultimately benefits both the league as a whole and its existing members, particularly Iowa State. While expansion often brings new markets, this particular rejection underscored a commitment to quality over quantity, solidifying the conference's post-realignment identity. For the Big 12, declining Memphis helped avoid potential dilution of its competitive and financial strength. The current configuration, strengthened by recent additions like UCF, BYU, Cincinnati, and Houston, has established a clear, geographically cohesive, and competitively robust footprint. Adding Memphis, a program without a consistent Power Five pedigree, could have introduced an element of instability or, at the very least, a less lucrative media rights partner, potentially diminishing the per-school revenue share. The Big 12 prioritized maintaining its strong, unified front, ensuring that its existing members continue to thrive without unnecessary compromises. For Iowa State, this decision is particularly advantageous. A strong, stable Big 12 means continued access to high-profile competitive matchups, which are crucial for recruiting and maintaining fan engagement. The financial health of the conference directly impacts Iowa State's athletic budget, allowing for investments in facilities, coaching, and student-athlete welfare. By not adding a program that might have been perceived as a step down in overall conference strength, the Big 12 signals its commitment to its current members' long-term prosperity. This stability allows Iowa State to focus on its competitive goals within a secure and increasingly formidable league. As the 2025 college football season approaches, optimism abounds in Ames, Iowa, and much of that hope rests squarely on the shoulders of the Iowa State Cyclones' formidable linebacker corps. This unit, poised to be one of the nation's elite, will undoubtedly be the driving force behind a highly successful campaign, culminating in a pivotal victory over rival Kansas State. The strength of Iowa State's defense has long been its ability to stifle opposing offenses, and in 2025, the linebackers are set to elevate that tradition. With a blend of returning experience, explosive athleticism, and proven playmaking ability, this group possesses the versatility to excel against both the run and the pass. Their collective football IQ and relentless pursuit will allow them to diagnose plays quickly, fill gaps with authority, and pressure quarterbacks effectively. This defensive prowess will be particularly evident in crucial matchups, none more so than against Kansas State. The Wildcats, known for their physical ground game and disciplined attack, will find their offensive rhythm disrupted by Iowa State's linebackers. Their ability to shed blocks, make open-field tackles, and force turnovers will dictate the tempo of the game, frustrating Kansas State's efforts to move the ball. By controlling the line of scrimmage and limiting big plays, the linebackers will empower the entire defense, creating opportunities for the offense and ultimately securing a decisive win. Their leadership and performance will be the bedrock of Iowa State's 2025 success. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!GametimeToday's episode is brought to you by Gametime. The 12-team College Football Playoff format presents a mixed bag for Iowa State football, offering both advantages and disadvantages, largely due to ongoing disagreements among conference leaders.A stable 12-team playoff provides Iowa State a more achievable path to the postseason. The expanded field means a strong 9-3 or 10-2 season, particularly within the competitive Big 12, could realistically lead to a playoff berth. This rewards consistent performance and fosters underdog narratives, aligning with Iowa State's program identity. Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark champions a "5+11" model, emphasizing merit-based entry over guaranteed conference allocations, which could benefit the Cyclones' pursuit of playoff spots. However, this unchanging structure also has drawbacks. While more accessible than four teams, it still favors traditional powerhouses with greater resources and larger recruiting bases. Iowa State, despite its recent successes, operates with less depth, and the increased number of playoff games could strain its roster. The format's stagnation stems from a significant philosophical divide, notably between the Big 12 and SEC. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey has suggested the current 12-team format could remain if no agreement is reached on a new one. The SEC and Big Ten have pushed for models with more guaranteed spots for their leagues, such as the Big Ten's "4+4+2+2+1" proposal. This contrasts sharply with Yormark's "earn it on the field" philosophy, creating an impasse that hinders further expansion or significant format changes.Ultimately, while the 12-team playoff offers Iowa State a tangible route to national relevance, the persistent disagreements between commissioners like Yormark and Sankey mean that inherent disparities in college football will likely endure, shaping Iowa State's path forward.
