The Colorado Avalanche were one of the more active teams on day 1 of free agency, but you might not know it since all their signings were more of the depth variety, save for one. The Colorado Avalanche traded out of the first round in the NHL draft, and then went goalie hunting. The Avs made a pretty smart trade in getting out of the first round and picking up some desperately needed draft picks in this year and next year's draft. The Colorado Avalanche crossed the ocean and made a signing Thursday when they inked Jere Innala from Finland. The Athletic took a look at 50 pending free agents across the league and projected their next contract. They did not predict which team these players would sign with, just what their contract could look like in terms of term and AAV. For the Avalanche they had three players on the list. Sean Walker, Jonathan Drouin and Yakov Trenin. Do we agree with the numbers they came up with? Colorado Avalanche Captain Gabriel Landeskog and GM Chris MacFarland met the media Thursday morning to discuss a number of things involving the team, with getting the biggest concern out of the way right off the bat. Gabe Landeskog is not retiring. His plan is to play next year. Exactly when still remains a mystery however. What also is a mystery is what the Avalanche will do with Val Nichushkin. Right now there doesn't seem like there is much they can do, with MacFarland going as far as to say it is "plausible" that he returns to the team when his suspension is over. We are a few days removed from the Colorado Avalanche season coming to an end by the hands of the Dallas Stars. Have we come to terms with that yet, or do we feel like this years Avs team went as far as expected? Maybe the bigger question is, was this season a failure? The Colorado Avalanche had their chances, but couldn't break through against the Dallas Stars, who an old nemesis in Matt Duchene found the back of the net to end the series in six games. The Colorado Avalanche learned shortly before puck drop that Val Nichushkin, their best player in these playoffs, was suspended for six months due to going back into the players assistance program for a third time. What the future holds for Nichushkin off the ice is obviously not known right now. But on the ice, it is a massive loss. It showed in Game 4 with the Dallas Stars, who now hold a 3-1 series lead after their 5-1 victory. Not only were the Avs down Nichushkin, they were also down Devon Toews. A late scratch due to an illness, we will have to wait and see if Toews can return for Game 5. A difficult day all around that started with so much promise with the return of Jonathan Drouin. The Colorado Avalanche needed to come out and set the tone for Game 3 vs the Dallas Stars. They were pretty successful in doing that. The Colorado Avalanche did pretty much everything the same as Game 1 against the Winnipeg Jets, but added much better goaltending to the equation, and the result was a convincing 5-2 win over the Jets. The series now heads back to Colorado tied up at 1. The Avs used four 2nd period goals, then lock down defense in the 3rd that prevented any Winnipeg comeback attempt.
