The killing spree began in Minneapolis in April of 1997 and ended 79 days later — on July 15 — on the steps of a Miami Beach mansion with the murder of Gianni Versace, the Italian fashion designer. The gunman, Andrew Cunanan, died by suicide eight days later. Many Minnesotans were glued to the more than two-month manhunt, including Dave Racer, who would eventually give a voice to the team who tracked Cunanan. His anxiety worsened in high school and was coupled with depression. Researcher Marana Muse spent upwards of 1,500 hours studying Minnesota death certificates she obtained from the Minnesota Department of Health and uncovered “illogical” data. Even pre-pandemic, she remembered feeling concerned for new mothers who were isolated for various reasons.But then COVID came, and Van Luven suddenly found herself prevented from doing home visits, which exacerbated an already difficult situation for the families she encountered.When asked if caring for these families "from afar" worked during the pandemic, Van Luven admitted the quality of the services she was able to provide took a significant hit.Support the show
