Episode 76: Filling In The Time

In the intricate tapestry of life, the concept of time assumes multifaceted roles. It transcends the mere ticking of seconds on a clock, evolving into a malleable resource waiting to be molded by our actions, thoughts, and emotions. Each moment presents an opportunity to paint the canvas of existence with vibrant strokes, whether through purposeful deeds, contemplative musings, or profound feelings. Time becomes the vessel through which we pour the essence of our being, a reservoir that we can draw from to shape our experiences and narratives.Yet, time is not always a relentless torrent; it can also resemble a gentle stream, meandering through the landscape of our days. In these moments of respite, the pace of life slows, allowing us to savor the tranquility that accompanies a lack of haste. These interludes provide a haven for rejuvenation, a chance to recalibrate amidst the relentless demands of a fast-paced world. Such periods of unhurried tranquility can often unveil the beauty of simplicity, granting us an opportunity to appreciate the subtleties that might otherwise go unnoticed in the frenzy of busier times.Sometimes, it is amidst the absence of fervent demands that the most profound revelations occur. The absence of frenetic demands enables us to tune into the whispers of our inner selves, fostering a deeper connection with our thoughts and emotions. These respites become a sanctuary where we can nurture our creativity and cultivate a sense of presence. The best times might indeed be those instances when time is not relentlessly pressing for attention, when the pace of life allows for introspection and mindful engagement. In these moments, we can bask in the gentle rhythm of existence and embrace the richness of a life lived not solely through the lens of productivity, but also through the embrace of contemplative stillness.Support the show

Episode 68: Alice in the Underground Chapter 1

The Call to AdventureIn the Hero's Journey, the Call to Adventure is a crucial stage that sets the story in motion. It is the point where the hero is presented with a challenge or an opportunity that calls them to embark on a journey or undertake a quest. The Call to Adventure typically comes from an external source, often in the form of a mentor, a messenger, or a significant event. The Call to Adventure serves as a catalyst for change in the hero's life. It disrupts their ordinary world and presents them with the opportunity to step into the unknown, face challenges, and ultimately grow and transform as a character. However, the hero initially faces a dilemma or resistance, expressing doubts, fears, or reluctance to heed the call. This reluctance is often rooted in the fear of the unknown or a desire to maintain their comfortable, familiar existence. The Call to Adventure can take various forms depending on the story. It could be a literal invitation, a sudden crisis, a supernatural occurrence, or a symbolic sign. Whatever its nature, the Call to Adventure represents the initial point of departure from the hero's ordinary life and begins their journey toward a higher purpose or a greater destiny.Examples of the Call to Adventure in popular stories include Harry Potter receiving his acceptance letter to Hogwarts, Luke Skywalker encountering Princess Leia's holographic message asking for help, or Frodo Baggins being tasked with destroying the One Ring in The Lord of the Rings. Episode 66: Fear AI

It's very buzzy this term AI. It's very buzzy because a Science Fiction concept is being manifested into reality. It has been utilized by the writers of these fiction stories as plot device and the evil which creates conflict in the narrative. Therefore, it is preloaded with fears and misconceptions thus wild speculation and fears are running rampant within the population. Naturally, the applications of this new technology are still being worked out and like all new technology, we have no actual idea how its going to affect society at large. This uncertainty and inability to know what is coming along because of it leaves plenty of room for fear mongers to stoke the fires within the hearts of those who easily succumb to dystopian nightmares. Therefore, I have a theme for this week's episode.Support the show

Episode 64: Purposefulness

Sitting down in the Creative Spaceship yesterday, with absolutely nothing written for this week's podcast, I had to force myself to go through and churn up ideas. I took a stab at one idea that was based off of the sound of a drum machine and a basic pattern this lead me to my first track; "Platinum Chill". From there the creativity was flowing and I mixed up another out of bit sounds called "Pause Game". This started me on a pattern of alliteration and quickly "Passing Lane" and "Pump that Energy up" came pouring out of my DAW. A bit of world building jamming with instruments lead me to complete "Planetary Progress" and finally I put together a nice chill out finisher called "Purpose." Support the show

Episode 63: New Album

Soooooooo.....Last Saturday was a chill and productive day. I got into the creative zone and made twelve songs that I say fits quite well into the genre of Generic House Music. This was prompted by an evening at a club where there were Open Decks and the songs I brought were far too hyper and psychotic for the room. So I put together these twelve songs and published them on Bandcamp as an album called Generic House Music Album. So this week's episode is a mix of these songs. So hooray. New Music you can buy. A New Mix you can listen to and enjoy. And a nice comfortable little set for any Open Deck events I happen to go join up. Funny thing happened this week. Instead of returning to the same Open Deck event, I had a night of playing electronic music with my synths. Funny how life works out sometimes. Honestly. It's really exciting. Support the show

Episode 57: Overloaded Definitions

This idea came to me a few weeks ago, and I have been slowly introducing it into my laboratory experiments. It is by no means finished its evolution. This is just a way station along the path.I have a keyboard which has some sounds that include beats programmed within them. For the past year or so, I have been tweaking these sounds to match my personal preferences and this has been the large part of what I have been presenting own a weekly basis. I also possess an electronic drum kit which sends out MIDI signals. The idea of using the e-drums as triggers for sliced up samples at the same time as the drum sounds are generated is what I have started playing with. Using this concept simultaneously with the keyboard is the big directional shift that is starting to develop. I can see another layer or two of sound generation coming along in the future and I am excited by this journey. There will be rocky episodes but I think that this will only get tighter and more intensely layered as time progresses. Support the show

So I missed last week. I was in the Theatre all week with my son - his HS put on their Senior Showcase and it was exciting to work with him backstage. All the hours I generally put into producing this podcast were spent there. This week, I have a single piece which is composed straight through. Has elements of both Trance and Drum n Bass. I have been dying to put out a DnB episode and this just snuck into this week's episode. Episode 51: Ambient Jazz House

This week the effort was a straight through composition. I wanted to break some patterns and try some new things. So I started writing this episode with experimentation in mind. One of the things I played around with was time signature changes. It starts in 4/4 then moves to 5/4 then to 2/4 before finally ending back in the comfortable 4/4 timing. I also went through some key changes, but that is not a new thing for me. Another thing that was experimental about this week, the entire episode is written as a a whole piece. So there are some chordal progressions which get repeated throughout as a motif. These were transcribed to fit the key changes. I did not change their timing when they were reapplied in the time change areas, because I wanted the broader and slow moving aspects of this motif to be retained. There are symphonic type voice changes for the motif and other themes. By this, I mean that Ione synth or texture channel will carry that for a bit and then it shifts to another texture channel. Finally, because my trumpet chops need work, and playing is the best way to do this, I put a solo trumpet into the mix. Naturally, this is me, so the trumpet gets an effects chain of its own to make it slide into the textures and tones of the electronic music. One of the areas I really struggle with lately, is with my drum patterns. I could utilize some standard loops which come with Lopic Pro X but I want to write music from top to bottom. So, trying to create grooves with the e-drum kit take some work. There are places where I programmed the beats and there are places where I played the beats on the kit. I am confident as I progress with this podcast project that these will become more groove based and much tastier. Ultimately, I feel like this episode is a broad success. It gives the very ambient electronic vibe with strong elements of jazz improvisation. It does not venture too deeply into more hardcore electronic music and I feel like it will be a pleasure to listen to this on a drive home from work or whilst soaking in the tub. Support the show

Episode 45: Computer Programming is Composition

For this week's exercise, I did not touch any musical instruments as physical interfaces with the sounds. Instead, every single note and beat of this music was written through mouse clicks (although it could also have been written with pen & ink on a page) inside of my DAW. There is a very Trance like feel to the whole episode with its long periods of phrasing and gradual buildups. The Tension and Release cycle was intentionally dragged into a larger periodicity to allow the mind to drift within the environmental effects of harmonics developing across contrasting timbres and textures. Episode 44: And Away We Go!

Lately, I have been concentrating on turning some outlines and frameworks into tracks. These are dabbles in genres which range from Chillwave to Drum n Bass. Once I have formatted the song outline, I then add lead parts on the keys or other instruments. This is a blending of jazz elements with EDM which is an expression of my internal landscape. I don't think I'll write much more about it now. Support the show

Episode 43: A Manifesto of Sorts

Well this week I have gone all in this new direction. My process has been redefined or refined. I make a set of tracks, then mix them together. I like this better than making one big track just for the podcast. This allows me to have some flexibility in my writing process. One thing I have played with this week is computer voices for my written word. Another thing I have done is made the structures looser and more jam-worthy. Basically, I am thrilled with another fire weekSupport the show

Episode 41:The Mechanics of Pushing Buttons

AS I am preparing a new set list for my next live show, I realized that it wasn't ready to begin recording. SO last night I set up a nice little set of patches and played this through completely improvised. If you listen closely, you can hear the churning turmoil of my current emotional landscape trying to escape.Support the show

Episode 39: Gearing UP

Last Saturday, I was rehearsing my set of music and I decided that none of it was any good for what I wanted to present. So, I started a blitz of creativity and created an entirely new Three Hour long set for last night's performance. All that work pushed away the time needed to give this week's episode it's own identity, so I recorded the first half hour of changes from that show's playlist to fill in this week.As I am sitting in my studio now, with all my gear scattered from last night's logistics, I will work out the video for publication tomorrow. Enjoy!Support the show

Zagging back into another experimental direction, this week I present a bit of Chillwave. I composed ten songs and then mixed them together into this half hour long segment. Episode 36 Old Dog, New Tricks

Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart, as well as many of the other great composers in the Western Musical Traditions, pretty regularly created compositions of the form "Theme and Variations." Often times, the main theme was a folk song or a melody that was popular. Then they crafted variations in the accompaniment, the melodic form and so on. The entire piece was longer than the snippet of the theme as it had originally been. Thus, this week's episode I have taken a popular and well-recognized theme and crafted variations. We go through some cinematic electronica, Deep House, Hardstyle, Dubstep, and Drum n Bass all while riffing on this theme. If you don't recognize this theme, it is undercover. As an aside, the title of this week's episode comes from my favorite scene in "Skyfall."Support the show

Episode 35: We're Just Doing This

Last night, the ever fabulous Mitch Cottingham joined me on the bass as we jammed in a Biergarten patio. Here's the last half hour. I can sense the germination of another project coming out of this collaboration, therefore the direction of this podcast is going to shift somewhat.Support the show

Episode 34: Let the Temperature Chill

Setting myself up for another live show next Thursday night. I am planning on having a drummer and a bass player come out to jam along with me. I have been experimenting with letting another person play guitar in the past but I think that experiment has run its course. So I will be handling the guitar and it is linked up with the synthesizers so that both are playing simultaneously. Therefore, this week's episode was a little improvisation in one take following these soundscape patterns I've programmed. One of the things I have shifted this week is energy direction. Taking out the big kick and snare combo lets the music breathe. I am hoping that playing with a human drummer next week will retain some of this chill as we build and connect together. Episode 33: Make it All About You (If that's what you really want)

This week, I have been really busy in my woodshop crafting a new keyboard station. I believe it turned out quite exceptionally. The byproduct of this activity is that my studio gear was not connected again until this morning. Rather than rush through a new composition sequence, I dusted off some tracks out of my archives. Some of these songs were written at the beginning of Lockdown, which is when I feel that my foot once again solidly landed on this path. There is at least one song that has been following me around since the early 90s and has just never really found a home to fit into. Sort of like me. Well, now, I think, both of us have a pretty good home. The track names are as follows: Peaceful Ride Break From Outer Space Orbital Existentialism Shoulder Drop Chill Lyin' to Myself Without YouCheck out my Double Album:Chromatic Depression: Volume One https://recordu.lnk.to/cdv1 Chromatic Depression: Volume Two https://recordu.lnk.to/cdv2Thank you all!Support the show

Episode 32: Generic Dubstep and its Derivatives

Continuing to mine this new vein of creativity, I submit another week's episode which is dedicated to mathematically based breakdowns of generically created dubstep tracks. My process is to create the Generic Dubstep tracks out of Apple Loops within the Dubstep category. Then convert the finished track into Drum Machine MIDI tracks and produce two more tracks based off this process. Finally, I mix them together to make this half hour long journey through the sonic landscape.Support the show

Episode 31: DubCalculusStep & It's Derivatives

Just for fun this week and warm-up, I started making pretty generic dubstep tracks using loops. It's fun. It's creative. It's not ground breaking or earth moving- well beyond the deep bass rumbles and stuff like that. Then I took that single track and turned it into drumheads in a sampler, arranged them in pretty patterns, added some effects and washed it out. Then repeated that whole second step again. Finally, I took my DJ software and mixed them all together like a generic EDM DJ. And Voila! That is this week's episode.I hope you enjoy!Support the show

Episode 29: Let's Get Weird

Thursday night, I attempted to livestream a three hour set. I pressed record on the audio software and play on the streaming software. The next morning, I went to go check up on the results and the audio on the livestream channel was awful - practically nonexistent. I spent most of the day trying to get that sorted out. This morning, I realized that I did not produce a podcast episode for this week. No problem, there was an audio recording of the session Thursday night. Press play to check on it. Well. It certainly was not what I was expecting. So, instead of a recording of what I played as the episode this week. I Made some really weird space sounds out of the corrupted files from the live session. Support the show

Episode 28: Blow My Own Horn

This podcast is beginning to shape up as a valuable tool for experimentation. It is also starting to yield results. This week I am playing around with using my trumpet to trigger MIDI signals within the keyboard station. There are programmed beats which I shift between and progress through as the trumpet is sending signals to the play chords and baselines based off of programmed patterns. I'm really happy with the way this is getting a jazz + electronica sound.
