S4 Ep 718How Can You Live in Tornado Country? EP 718

Every time there is an incident that causes death, whether it be a hurricane, earthquake or tornado – or something else, people say things like: "I could never live there." Or they ask: "How can you live in tornado alley?" Today, we will talk about what it is like to live in a tornado prone area, what we do to prepare for them, and why we stay. Featured Event: 2023 Permaculture Technology Jambouree in Missoula, MT at Wheaton Labs July 3-14 - multiple tracks. Tickets range from $1600 to $2500 depending on the options you choose. Dollar Tree was first. We've been buying single-use applications of superglue there, which has avoided a lot of waste. The coolers were all in good shape; all pretty much full less typical usage. Other shelves were also well-stocked. For those interested, they now have seed packages. Our second stop was a little ethnic Mexican store we visit from time to time for things Sonia particularly likes, such as plantains and a vanilla flavoring she adds to her coffee. I like their small bags of pasta noodles. Here, we paid the price for a late start to our day, as it was lunchtime and the store was packed. Their shelves are always full. Next was Hobby Lobby. They were busy as well. Sonia only wanted a couple of mixed media pads, so it was a quick in and out, but I didn't see any empty areas. Home Depot was next. A 2x4x8 remains at $3.35. They looked busy as well. If I had to guess, people are ramping up their gardening. Aldi was lastWe found heavy cream this week. I definitely noticed higher prices. The meal replacement shakes I get are at least $2 higher. I stopped in Food City. There is still very little choice in larger bags of dry cat food; I saw mostly generic that I wouldn't feed a dog. There are a lot of recipes online for mug cakes, but we like the simplest, which is to combine one box of angel-food cake mix plus one box of any other kind; no oil needed. They'd had little angel-food cake on recent trips, but today they had multiple boxes of two different brands. Untainted regular gasoline remains at $3.999/gallon. Frugality Tip (none) Operation Independence Holler Roost - Function Stacking, Getting Into Eggs Again Main topic of the Show: How Can You Live in Tornado Country Weather this weekend - What living in tornado land is like >Situational awareness, getting information >Jokes vs taking responsibility for your welfare >Zello, FB, TG Communications Throughout the State >Weather Radio Preparing Avoidance is the number one goal (mountain views, building quality, driving in it, leaving an area, staying in an area) Likelihood What happens when a bad set comes through: Power Loss Road closures Need for assistance Water system failures Communications knocked out Be ready to: Take care of yourself and your community, render aid to those nearby, provide temporary shelter, go help if you can (Share photos/video as an emotional processing thing) Why do we stay? Odds of being killed in a tornado are relatively low and other locations have different things that are risks. Floods for example. It is beautiful here People become nonchalant about risks with more time spent near a danger Where else would we go? We accept the risk, take what steps we can, and go on How about you? S4 Ep 715How Can We Fund Medical Care in Our Communities? Ep 715

Today I toss around some ideas for how we could fund medical care in our communities. One of the big fears many have is getting ill and losing everything to the costs associated with medical care. Is there one on your travels? Stop in. Things like sneakers on clearance are great buys, camp chairs are half of Walmart prices, name brand garden tools are crazy cheap. My little secret is to check out the food section where I buy pink Himalayan salt for $4.99 for a 5# bag (they usually have rock and fine ground). You can get some really good buys in the spice section. Happy hunting y'all, Make it a great week. I can't wait to see what we cook up. https://www.youtube.com/@LifeDoneFree Weekly Shopping Report from Joe First stop was Dollar Tree. Stock in the frozen food coolers has notably increased; they're probably at least half full, with a decent variety. The drink aisle and coolers also were a lot more full, with good variety. There were more vitamins in the health area too. Home Depot was next. Sonia stayed in the car, so I just ran in and out. A 2x4x8 remains at $3.35. I also picked up a long Diablo reciprocating saw blade for use on some saplings in the yard. Aldi was third. I thought the shelves looked more stuffed than usual; there was plenty of product. We found everything we wanted. Eggs have come down, perhaps to $2.7x? We also found heavy cream, and there were multiple boxes of it. We got a case of their canned cat food, leaving at least two more. Weigel's was last. My usual station is running on a backup pump, and the flow rate is so low that I aborted a fillup on Thursday evening after just five gallons. The other station is running just fine. The price is the same, with a gallon of untainted regular still $3.999. Frugality Tip Home repairs can be overwhelming. Some times you need to "hire a guy". You have to be ok with knowing your limits. I know I can't (yet) do framing and stucco, but I can paint. I saved us $300 by buying a gallon of stucco waterproofing and a gallon of paint. It will take me longer than if I paid a guy, but any time I can shave a few bucks off a project I will. P.S. I watched the stuccoing process, and feel pretty confident that I can do a small project or repair next time. Make it a great week ~Margo Operation Independence Ram for sale versus processing - an update Processing workshop launches in one week Main topic of the Show: Crisis Communications What is crisis communications Why did I think of it? (Dentist) What should you do if you find yourself in a tense situation? (Photoshopped head on a campaign photo, Al Gore) Acknowledge that providing facts as soon as possible is key and communicate that you are gathering facts so that you can explain the situation Do NOT make up answers to anything. Not ever. Not even if you think you know Clarify who is qualified to speak on this matter (Is it you, someone in your organization or family, etc). Ensure everyone KNOWS who to send inquiries to Release the facts to the media, on your communications platforms etc. (Media statement vs press release) Never repeat the accusation - we do not need out of context audio clips of you saying you did something that you did not say Handle interview requests as you usually should, by first researching the media outlet before agreeing to an interview Sched

Things like eggs, produce, and baking supplies all come from Aldi. If I'm running into the grocery store that is closer to home, I also make it a point to check out their BOGO section, you can save a few bucks right there. Make a list of the things you buy often and check the prices at different stores, you would be shocked at some of the differences. I use a specific coffee creamer that they have the grocery store, but Walmart has it for $1.50 less, so I'll grab a couple when I'm there. Operation Independence Selling a ram alive vs in packages Headed to Next-steps.info – you can still get tickets! Main topic of the Show: Imposter's Complex This was inspired by a talk with Amy Dingmann over at a Farmish Kind of LIfe I have been reading a book called Dotcom Secrets by Russle Brunson -it was recommended by John Bush John's selling and email system vs what we do here Keeping an open mind People getting mad about me making money, or not wanting to know when things are for sale. Decision: The few who are mad at me for selling things don't really support me so I need to be ok with leaving them behind Current email list will have no changes News lists will happen over time >>>What has happened with training webinars over the past two years - we do them better and why The Big Decision: If I invest more in training, there are better results for the people I want to help - a win/win Which brings me to imposter's complex: Did a live Radio Show Last night and the feedback was that Tim and I were inspiring. We had no idea what we were doing! Enter Imposter's Complex. Concept: you just need to be a chapter or two ahead of the people you are helping to be able to teach them and do NOT need to be an "expert". To them you are an expert. In fact you probably teach it bette than someone who is miles ahead. Ways I have used this: Going on autopilot - and getting out of it Writing Marketing Copy – fake it til you make it Launching the podcast Being "OK" with losing listeners because I sell things, have sponsors, etc (It hurts but wont in the long run) Reminding myself to be disciplined with #my3things (Free webinar) When you get up and post something like: Going for a daily walk can change your life, and you realize you only went on three last week, are you an imposter? Or are in the fake it til you make it time? Feeling Imposter's complex is normal. Not moving forward because of it though, that is a huge mistake/ Make it a great week! Song: None GUYS! I'm beginning to see some thinning in the main food aisle, although there are more products in the drink aisle, and the drink coolers are a little better stocked than last week. The frozen-food coolers in the back remain mostly empty. The store was pretty busy today, with two cashiers open, both with lines. Next was Home Depot. A 2x4x8 remains at $3.35. They were rather busy around the contractor entrance, but I did not look around the rest of the store, as Sonia was waiting outside while I checked. Our final stop was Aldi. We found what we wanted. There were at least two cases of heavy cream. I noticed that flour had gone up, and is now $2.18. Our careful buying habits caught up to us this week in a good way, and we escaped the store for less than $50. Untainted regular at $3.999/gallon. Sonia commented that she saw more people with fuller carts. Frugality Tip: Keto Friendly Cheese Snack from Dylan Cheese squares baked at 350F for 10 minutes makes darn good cheese crackers. What is SWOT? Internal: Strengths What are you good at? What do you have of value in your household? What would your mom say are your best talents? Weaknesses What are you bad at? What are your weaknesses? Where are you vulnerable if things go wrong (like a job loss, etc) What limitations do you have? External Opportunities What trends do you see in the big wide world that can create opportunity? What external factors provide opportunities for you/your family? Threats What trends in the big wide world do you see that are threats? What external factors limit your opportunities? Etc. 6-8 Questions for Nicole to Ask •Why I think more artists/creatives should be preppers, they probably are but would not admit it. •What is a "Veblen good" and what that means for those who create them in this economic climate •selling art changed drastically (for me anyway) when the Great Recession happened and it really has not come back since then. •What it's like to be an artist who is a prepper/survivalist and how isolating that can be. •going it alone, and so many of the pitfalls of being single and the importance of setting boundaries. Being seen as an expendable resource and/or your priorities are not important. •along that same thing, dealing with the perception of being a prepper/survivalist and handling the usual contempt of others - until they are in a bind and come to you to save them. This and the previous bullet point tends to be far more of a problem with women. •TSP has been my "safe space" for years and I can say stuff there that I could never talk about to other artists and creatives. The store has changed for the better. Maybe they added r borrowed some staff, but the store has been neatened up considerably. The drink coolers are probably at least 50% stocked, with (imho) a better product mix, including Venom energy drinks. The shelves are a lot neater too, and the Health aisle has had a lot of products added, and nicely organized. The place no longer looks "picked and sad," which is good. Home Depot was #3, just to check the price of a 2x4x8. It is unchanged from last week, at $3.35. The store was normal-busy. Aldi was last. They still had heavy cream. We found everything we wanted, and my debit card was warm but not smoking. Untainted regular gasoline remains at $3.999/gallon. Frugality Tip from Charles Test the limits of the TONER LOW notifications that you get on your printers. The HP Color printer that I have has been warning of impending doom for over 2 weeks now...probably 100+ pages have been printed with the existing cartridge. At ~$100 per cartridge...well worth running it until the print quality gets bad. On some older printers, when you get the low toner warning, you can remove the cartridge, shake it gently, and reinstall it, getting a another day or so of light printing... Operation Independence The Rat Infestation and Simplifying Life Main topic of the Show: Develop Your Purpose with #my3things Develop Your Purpose In the early years of developing the #my3things method, we would go out to corporations to help them create strategic plans and marketing foundations so that they could establish a way to grow their impact, grow their sales, and improve the quality of their products or services. Before each engagement, my cofacilitator and I would create the coursework for the group, customized to what we thought they most needed. Sometimes, we would run the groups through activities that would result in a Vision Statement and other times, we would run them through developing their purpose first. In the end, after trying both ways multiple time and with different actives, we realized that developing the Vision first, followed my the purpose helped our customers come to consensus faster. Often, they would revisit their vision statement after developing the purpose statement, but time spent crafting both was reduced over time. Why bring this up? Because as you develop your purpose statement, you may decide that adjustments are needed to your Vision statement and that is part of the interactive process to come up with your life strategic plan. Sometimes it takes seeing the same thing through multiple lenses to fully refine your direction. Your purpose takes the vision you have developed and boils it down to the SO WHAT? Why do you exist in this world? How is the word better because you are in it. If you are wildly successful and disappear for ten years, how do things look different in a good way when you return? To get to this, you first deconstruct your vision statement by analyzing the key elements present in this statement that MUST be there. Basically, you *start with your narrow Visions statement and pull out elements or characteristics that are important to its success and list them. The short cut would be to go back to the list that you made before you crafted the sentence, but this would be limiting. Instead, pull out a new list of characteristics or elements. You will find that they have subtly changed with the crafting of your visions statement. In the case of the Holler/LFTN Community, this is how that list looks: The Holler/LFTN COMMUNITY provides an inviting supportive place where aspiring agorists and homesteaders can conne

S4 Ep 673Episode 673 - What is My 2023 Word of the Year?

Episode 673 - What is My 2023 Word of the Year? Today is our last Monday Show until after the New Year is upon us! In keeping with tradition, I will share with you the word of the year, why it was chosen, and what I hope it will mean - even though we all know we find different lessons along the journey. I will also let you know what is happening during the time between Christmas and New Years for content. Livestream Schedule this week: Tuesday Live with John Willis and Ed Hubbell from IridiumSolutions.caLFTN Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGZgu0AKUSI Today's Sponsor: Paul Wheaton od Permies.com and Wheaton Labs https://permies.com/link/lftn Paul Wheaton has developed a truly passive greenhouse that can grow through the winter with no additional heating. Not only that, but it won't overheat in the summer months! How's that possible? Find out by watching the Truly Passive Greenhouse movie: https://permies.com/link/lftn Email feedback to [email protected] Tales from the Prepper Pantry Every Nook and Cranny in the deep freezers are stuffed, as is the fridge with things to cook (Managed to decommission the two outdoor appliances) Almost through the potatoes from the garden (had half a bushel) End of year restock is primarily complete Christmas Dinner from the pantry: Leg of lamb, roasted turnips and carrots, charcuterie and pickled things (Holler Neighbor Style) In purge mode for a last push before the end of the year - lost the crap, keep the things we use Weekly Shopping Report from Joe The first stop was Walgreen's for some vitamins. Stock was mostly good, but there was only one left of a large size of "D," so we had to choose another size in order to use their buy one get one free. Food City was next. Dry cat food was very limited, but they had a couple of 16 lb. bags of Meow Mix. They had a lot of Friskies boxed cans, so we added a box of those too. Dollar Tree was next. We found some large 9Lives cans in there for the first time in months, and grabbed a few; not all our cats like those. The frozen food coolers were really sparse and most of the drink coolers are back to being nearly empty; I think it's the worst I've seen it. The health aisle is beginning to look picked again, but most other areas looked well stocked; there were less unrefrigerated canned drinks though. Both of the two lines they had open extended back into the aisles. Same at Home Depot, which I ran in just to check the price of a 2x4x8. It's still $3.75. I did not look over any other areas, but it was fairly crowded, as spending season is at its peak. Aldi was last. We got a few extra things in case we decide to put off next week's shopping, but grocery crowds shouldn't be too bad, so we'll likely go. We found what we wanted, including heavy cream. I didn't see any notable holes, but both lettuce and grapes did not look as good as usual. Untainted regular gasoline remains at $3.999. Frugality Tip from Margo Here's a frugality tip on one of the most valuable things to me.....MY TIME (AND SANITY). For your holiday menu plan it out a month or so in advance. Gather the things you need and start cooking some things early and freeze it (and then take it out of the freezer the day before to thaw) Make sure you have all of the things you need the week before the holiday. I did not make rolls this year, I bought rolls and put them in the freezer, FYI Hawaiian rolls freeze and thaw very well. And save your sanity during the holidays and keep a stocked pantry y'all! Operation Independence The 3% checking account, emergency fund, and discipline Night Before Christmas Countdown Replay episode will not be replays - start your 2023 on the right foot. The importance of downtime. Main topic of the Show: What is my 2023 Word of the Year No year has ever been so hard as this year for finding the right word. Even last night, I knew the concept but not the word. Part of the problem is that I knew the concept I wanted but was not finding a single word to describe it. And the two word option I had was only a close fit, not the full breadth of what I wanted to focus on. What is a word of the year? Why do it? Past words: Grow (It is a choice and it is up to me) Balance (You have to want it and boundaries) Courage (The power of no. Letting go of insecurities. Sooner is better.) Then we have this year. I strove for MORE. I worked harder. I played harder. I undid every lesson I leaned in the year of balance. I GREW my businesses. I made it over a really important personal hump: Increased cash flow to where I could finally take some from the businesses. What the last five years have been like building LFTN and Holler Roast Coffee. Had to have the courage to Say no to things I was doing to earn money but that are distractions from the primary objective Address conflict head on Openly admit weaknesses Stand my ground Build personal talents from good to great Become unapologetic Where it has led - Priority on things that are important to me on
