Episode 133 - "A Leader Others Win For" with Ned Yost
<p>In this episode, Mike sits down with former Major League Baseball player and manager Ned Yost to discuss his career, and how he influenced so many other players and coaches over the course of 40 years in the big leagues. He also shares some fascinating insights and stories from some of the game’s all-time best players and managers, including Bobby Cox and Ted Simmons.<br><br>Yost played six seasons in MLB for three different teams – Milwaukee Brewers, Texas Rangers, and Montreal Expos. After a brief stint as a Minor League manager, Yost served as an Assistant Coach for the Atlanta Braves, serving as bullpen coach from 1991-98, and third base coach from 1999-2002. Following the 2002 season, Yost was named Manager of the Milwaukee Brewers, a position he held through 2008.<br><br>In May 2010, Yost was named Manager of the Kansas City Royals, where he remained until he retired following the 2019 season. In 2013, he led the Royals to their first winning season in 10 years. Just two years later, Yost led the Royals to the best record in the American League, and ultimately to their first World Series title in 30 years.</p>

<p>It is every college baseball coach's dream to capture the College World Series title and hoist that National Championship trophy. Well, Chris Lemonis was fortunate to experience that in 2021, as his Mississippi State Bulldogs took home the crown to Starkville. In this episode, Mike Linch talks to Coach Lemonis about the culture of his program, how to overcome challenges when players are struggling, and how he wants to be remembered by the players he coaches.<br><br>About Chris Lemonis:<br><br>Since arriving in Starkville, Chris Lemonis has guided the Bulldogs to unparalleled success, including capturing Mississippi State’s first national championship in 2021. He is the first Division I head coach to reach the College World Series in his first two full seasons as head coach of a program in the Super Regional era (since 1999).<br><br>In three seasons at MSU, Lemonis has compiled a 114-37 record (.755 winning percentage) and taken his program to every College World Series that has been played during that span. In each of his two complete seasons at the helm of the Bulldogs, Lemonis has won 50-plus games, posting a 52-15 record in 2019 and a 50-18 mark in 2021. Lemonis notched his 100th win at MSU, doing so in his first 130 games. He is the fastest head coach in program history to reach the 100-win mark.<br><br>Owning a head coaching record of 255-128-2, Lemonis was also a part of nearly 800 wins as an assistant coach and three trips to the College World Series. During his time at Indiana, Lemonis' teams averaged 35.3 wins per season, including a 40-win campaign during his final season in Bloomington. He averaged 39.2 victories per year during his career in an assistant role (784 wins), bolstered by a 44.9 wins-per-season average at Louisville. The Cardinals were college baseball's winningest program during that eight-year span and made the program’s first three trips to Omaha.<br><br>Lemonis not only understands what it takes to get to Omaha as a coach but also as a player. A 1992 graduate of The Citadel, Lemonis added a 1990 appearance in the College World Series as a student-athlete. The appearance make the Bulldogs one of just three schools in Southern Conference history (Duke, Wake Forest) and only current member of the conference to advance to Omaha.</p>

He is serving in his fifth unopposed term as Mayor where the city has since doubled in population to 24,000 residents. During his first days as Mayor, Tommy developed a “Quality of Life” campaign that has made the city of Acworth the fastest growing city residentially and commercially in Cobb County. <p>In episode 106 Mike sits down with coach, speaker, author and fellow Liberty University graduate, Stephon Leary.<br><br>Stephon Leary has a long tenure of basketball success. Coach Leary's athletic career started as a high school player at Madison High School in Houston, TX and finished at Houston Christian Preparatory (now Faith West Academy in Katy, TX) where he led them to an NACA National Championship. He went on to play Division I basketball at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia from 1987-1992. His college playing career was cut short due to knee injuries.<br><br>Coach Leary began his coaching career in 1993 at his high school alma mater, Faith West Academy. He served as the school's Athletic Director and Head Coach for football, basketball, and baseball. He built a competitive athletic program from the ground up with limited funds and facilities at a time when the high school only went through the ninth grade. He led the high school girls varsity basketball team to five State Championships and guided the boys varsity teams to two State Championships along with several Regional Championship appearances for both teams. In addition, he coached the high school football team to become the TAPPS 3A State Champions in 2000. Combining all the basketball teams Coach Leary has led, he has accumulated a record of 532 wins and 166 losses.<br><br>From 2002-2009, Coach Leary has been utilizing his coaching talent in the collegiate ranks. He returned to his college alma mater, Liberty University, where he was hired to be the Recruiting Coordinator, manage the strength & conditioning program, supervise skill development, and handle scouting. He spent three years at Liberty helping the team to a Big South Conference 2nd place finish in 2003, 1st place finish in 2004, and 2nd place finish in 2005. In 2004, Liberty won the Conference Championship and advanced to the NCAA National Tournament.<br><br>He was then offered the opportunity to become a Head Coach and build a championship program at first year NCAA Division II University, Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, Florida. He spent two years with his teams experiencing success in beating nationally ranked opponents in one of the toughest conferences in the nation for NCAA Division II.<br><br>You will love this conversation talking about Stephon's time growing up in Houston to his time at Liberty University.. She was a five time All-American at Western Illinois & UCLA. She helped the Bruins win the first of their 11 NCAA national championships in 1982. For all of her accolades, she was named the NCAA "player of the decade".<br><br>After her collegiate career, she played in the 1996 & 2000 Olympics and helped the USA win the gold in both! She also appeared in five Pan-American games helping the team win the gold medal in all of them!<br><br>When she retired from softball in 2000, Coach Richardson began to make amazing contributions off the field! Episode 104: Jimmy Dykes
<p>In this episode of Linch with Leader, Mike sits down with former college basketball coach and current ESPN & SEC basketball analyst, Jimmy Dykes.<br><br>Jimmy Dykes first joined ESPN at the start of the 1995-96 men’s college basketball season as a game and studio analyst, and is entering his 20th season with the company, after serving as the women’s head basketball coach at the University of Arkansas from 2014-2017. He led the Razorbacks to one NCAA tournament appearance and finished with an overall record of 43-49.<br><br>Prior to his career with ESPN, Dykes played three years at the University of Arkansas, playing for the legendary coach Eddie Sutton. After his playing career ended, he went on to be a graduate assistant for Coach Sutton. Dykes’ coaching career includes a number of assistant coaching stints from Sacramento State to Oklahoma State. He then spent three years as an NBA scout prior to joining ESPN in the mid 90s. He is the author of the challenging book, “The Film Doesn’t Lie” which will challenge readers to look at their lives and see if their walk and talk match up. NCC is also redeveloping a city block located at the intersection of the Capitol Hill, Navy Yard, and Riverfront neighborhoods. The Capital Turnaround will be a mixed-use space, including event venue, child development center, marketplace, and co-working space. Mark holds a Doctor of Ministry degree from Regent University and is the New York Times best-selling author of 18 books including, The Circle Maker, In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day, Wild Goose Chase and has recently released Double Blessing, Whisper, and Play the Man. Mark is married to Lora and they live on Capitol Hill with their three children: Parker, Summer, and Josiah.</p>

Coach Richt shares his journey through the game of football and also his faith story of how he gave his heart to Christ!<br><br>Coach Richt's Georgia teams won two (SEC) championships, five SEC division titles, and one ACC division title while at the University of Miami. He was a two-time SEC Coach of the Year (2002, 2005), the 2017 ACC Coach of the Year, and the winner of the national 2017 Walter Camp Coach of the Year Award.<br><br>Prior to his coaching days, Mark Richt played quarterback at the University of Miami and then was a graduate assistant at Florida State University for hall of fame coach, Bobby Bowden. Coach Richt is currently an analyst with the ACC Football Network.</p>
