Ep 529Free Up Your Energy: Letting Go of the Baggage
In this bite-sized episode, I'm diving into the world of sentiment and baggage. You know, all those things we collect over the years that start to weigh us down. Trust me, I get it – my wardrobe's got clothes I haven't worn in ages, and my garage? Let's not even go there! This conversation is all about understanding why we hold onto stuff and, more importantly, how to let it go. It's not just about clearing physical space; it's about freeing up energy and creating room for new possibilities. Remember that Marie Kondo's question, "Does it bring me joy?" It's time to really think about that. I've been helping a friend downsize recently, and wow, the things we accumulate over decades! It's been a real eye-opener, and it's made me reflect on my own habits. So, I'm sharing some tips and tricks on how to tackle your own clutter, one step at a time. Whether it's your wardrobe or that drawer full of who-knows-what, there's a sense of freedom in letting go. And hey, it's not just about the physical stuff. Next week, we're delving into the internal baggage we all carry. Because let's face it, we've got some head trash to clear out too! I'd love to hear your thoughts on this journey of decluttering. How are you doing with your stuff? Could you see yourself releasing some of it? If this episode resonates with you, share it with a friend who might need a little nudge too. Ep 528Worms and Laughter with Cathy Nesbitt
The power of laughter and worms. A great conversation from 2021 with Cathy Nesbitt a vermiculture champion and laughter ambassador. She is saving the earth with compost and saving people with laughter. As with all of the conversations, they never date. Today’s guest is Cathy Nesbitt who has has been a vermiculture champion for over 20 years (that’s worm composting to you and me). Being a lady of a certain age, her working life started with a few options: Teacher, Nurse or Secretary. She chose the latter and had a 20-year career as a secretary and PA working for some prestigious companies. Whilst this work was fine, it was not her passion. The shift to something more inspiring began when she volunteered at a nursing home. She became interested in Psychology and was inspired to study, so she joined a night school class whilst continuing to work full-time at her day job. After finishing her qualification, she sought an opportunity to use and explore her new skills and found a place to work with challenged adults. “This is why I was put on earth to be a social worker. Until I met management, I did not expect the politics.” Little actions can lead to big changes, and in the 1990s, most developed countries were having problems with waste. Canada was no exception. Landfills in Toronto had become full, and trash was being exported to US landfill sites. Looking to do her bit, Cathy started composting at home and encouraged others to do the same. A work injury in 2001 led Cathy to consider new options, and she decided to start her own business. That was the start of what has now been a 20-year journey with composting and worms. Throughout the years, Cathy has won over 20 awards for green business and community support composting. She has published over 300 articles and has been on TV and radio, both local and national. Not one to stand still, Cathy is also a certified Laughter Yoga Leader, Teacher, and Ambassador. So, her life has a theme of worms, bean sprouts, and laughter. Her mission is to promote simple solutions for today’s challenges. Ep 527Are You Looking in the Right Place?
Have you ever wondered if you're looking in the right place? This episode is all about change—about shifting your perspective and focus. As we transition from summer to autumn, I've noticed the temperature in my house dropping. At 18 degrees, it feels chilly now, but in the winter, 18 degrees feels just fine. It's all about what we're used to, right? This shift in focus is something I see often in coaching conversations. People frequently think they want something, but it's not what they actually need. Take money, for example. Sometimes, I look at my bank balance and feel secure, and other times, the same number makes me feel uneasy. It's all about perspective and how we view our resources. One of my clients recently sought support from a friend for a particular problem. It became clear that the friend couldn't provide the needed support, but within an hour, the client had a new idea that could solve the problem. By looking in a different place, they found a new opportunity and took action. It was a fantastic result, and the universe seemed to align everything perfectly. My wife had a similar experience during a meditation session. She noticed the keys on her keyboard—shift, enter, backspace—and realized that shifting our perspective allows us to re-enter situations with new capacities. Fresh thinking and new ideas often come from looking at things differently. Einstein once said you can't solve a problem with the same thinking that got you there. So, if you have a recurring problem or something you'd like to change, try looking at it from a new perspective. Sometimes, this means making difficult decisions, but freedom often comes after those tough choices. Remember, life is an adventure, and you are the principal character. Seeing yourself as the hero of your story can fundamentally change how you treat yourself and your life. So, where are you looking? Are you looking in the right place to solve your current problems? Ep 526Discovering Your Calling: Richard Blank’s Journey from Ivy League Paths to Costa Rican Call Centers
Hello, friends! 🌟 Welcome back to Life, Passion, and Business. I'm your host, Paul Harvey. Today, I have an incredible story to share with you, one that might just inspire you to rethink your path in life. Ever wondered if you’re truly following your calling? Or questioned whether you even have one? You’re not alone. This show was last aired nearly 2 years ago, and the story is just as relevant. In 2022, I was approached by Richard Blank, a fascinating individual with a story that’s anything but ordinary. Richard was set on the Ivy League path to a career in medicine or law, but he knew deep down that wasn’t his true calling. Instead, he took a bold step to major in Spanish. Fast forward to today, Richard runs a highly successful call center business in Costa Rica and couldn’t be happier with his life choices. 🌍 What makes Richard’s story so unique is that he didn’t reach out to sell anything. His only aim was to share his journey and encourage others to explore their true calling. Before we dive into our conversation, remember to check out our website at life passion and business.com. We offer focused coaching that can help you find your path in life. More on that at the end of the program! Now, let's get to the heart of today’s episode. Richard Blank, a native of Philadelphia, grew up with a plan laid out for him. Yet, even as a young adult, he knew he needed to be inspired by his career. His journey took him to the University of Arizona, where he majored in communication and Spanish. By 21, he was studying in Madrid, embracing the Spanish language and culture. On returning to the U.S., Richard’s bilingual skills opened doors in Spanish television and sales. But his life took a pivotal turn at 27 when he moved to Costa Rica to train employees at a call center. He fell in love with the industry, the country, and its culture. By his mid-30s, Richard started his own call center, growing it steadily to now employ over 150 people. And guess what? He also has a passion for collecting vintage pinball machines! 🎮 Our conversation isn’t about telemarketing. It’s about Richard’s life philosophy, his belief that everyone has a calling, and how he’s giving back to his adopted community. He wants you to find your calling just as he did. So, let’s dive into our chat with Richard Blank! Richard’s story is a testament to following your passion, no matter how unconventional it might seem. He shares valuable insights on leadership, empathy, and creating a positive work environment. If you’re ever in Costa Rica, don’t forget to look him up. 🌴 Thank you for joining us on this journey. Ep 525What do you see first the light or the dark?
For the Sunday reflection, a question was asked of me this morning. Are you focusing on the light or the dark? It's a good one, right? What do you notice first in the world around you? The bad bits or the good bits? Our world is complex, full of conflict, but also overflowing with beauty and wonder. The magic lies in where we choose to place our attention. When we focus on appreciating the good, we feel better about ourselves and the world we live in. And when we feel good, we can do good, be good, and change the not-so-good around us. This episode is about mastering our thoughts instead of being slaves to them. Yes, we can see the negativity and the ugliness, but we can also open our eyes and hearts to the beauty. It's not just about seeing; it's about being and doing. When we act from a place of generosity and openness, we feel good about ourselves and positively impact the world around us. Finding joy in everything we do, even in mundane tasks like cleaning a toilet, can bring satisfaction. Knowing that someone else will appreciate what you've done can bring a sense of joy. Giving our best to the world attracts the best in return. So, how can you start this journey? It's a bit like practising gratitude. When you catch yourself finding fault, consciously look for beauty. Ask yourself, "Where is the beauty in this?" Today marks the autumn equinox in the UK, a time of equal day and night. While the nights will start drawing in, there's a unique beauty in the autumn colors and the freshness in the air. There's beauty in change, even when it means saying goodbye to summer. For our friends in the southern hemisphere, it's the first day of spring, a time to look forward to summer. We have a choice in how we view the world. The media often highlights the dark side because it grabs our attention, playing on our innate need for security. But we need to guard against this and choose to see the light. There's always something to be joyful about, even in the greatest challenges. It could be as simple as a good cup of coffee or a stranger's smile. By expressing the best of ourselves and acknowledging the best in the world, we become role models for others. We help them see the beauty they might have missed. So, give it a try. There's no magic tool, just a conscious choice to look for the good. If you find it difficult, keep looking—it's there. Nature is a great place to find beauty and wonder; it carries on regardless of our actions.

Ep 524The Transformative Power of a Single Question: A Journey from Addiction to Purpose
Hello, this is your host Paul Harvey. Today, I want to take you back to January 2022 when I had a truly fascinating conversation with Di Manuel. Trust me, this episode is one for the books! We dive into the depths of change, the struggle with addiction, and dealing with complicated feelings. Di was in a dark place until one powerful question from his wife changed everything: This question was pivotal for Di, leading him on a path of self-discovery and transformation. This episode explores the themes of fitness, family, faith, finances, and fun However, the journey wasn't without its pitfalls. Di became known as "Fun Guy Di," always the life of the party but dependent on alcohol and drugs to maintain his extroverted persona. The turning point came when his wife, Christy, sat him down and asked that life-altering question. From that moment, Di committed to a year without drinking, seeking support through therapy and personal development. This decision led to a complete transformation, not just in his personal life but also in his professional endeavours. Today, Di is a TEDx speaker, an author, and the creator of Mentorship Mondays, a safe space for men to connect and support each other. His story is one of rebirth, travel, writing, and more. It's a testament to the power of change and the impact of asking the right questions. Ep 523When Goals Fall Short: Embracing Setbacks and Moving Forward
What do you do with a missed goal? Today’s reflection is all about dealing with the moment you realize you might not hit that goal you’ve been aiming for. It’s a tough pill to swallow, right? Whether it’s disappointment, shame, or just plain frustration, we all have ways of coping. Let me share a personal story. I had big plans to run a marathon this October. I've been training hard, but it’s been a year full of little setbacks, especially with my left knee. Despite my efforts, my long runs have been leaving me completely wiped out. The harsh reality hit me – running 42.8k might be a stretch too far for my current condition. So, I had to make a tough decision. I won’t be running the marathon as planned. Instead, I’m looking at other races on the same day, something more manageable for my body right now. It’s disappointing, especially since I’ve told everyone about my marathon plans. But I’m trying to see it as taking the adult path – recognizing the reality of the situation and adjusting accordingly. You see, goals are like signposts on our journey, not the end-all-be-all. The real magic is in the journey itself. Training for a marathon, or any goal, teaches us so much along the way. And sometimes, we need to reevaluate and adjust our plans to stay healthy and move forward. This got me thinking about how we handle unmet goals in life. Do we see them as failures, or as valuable information for our next steps? There’s no right or wrong here – it’s all about perspective. Each setback is a chance to learn and grow. I’d love to hear how you deal with goals you can’t quite reach. Do you see them as failures, or just part of the journey? Reach out and let’s chat about it! And don’t forget to check out the resources on my website at lifepassionandbusiness.com. There’s a lot there to help you on your journey, including the powerful method of focus coaching. Ep 522Beyond Shame and Guilt with Lois Hollis
Following the Shortcast at the weekend, where we explored the power of Self-Talk, we touched on the issue of shame and guilt, which reminded me of my conversation with Lois Hollis, a woman in her 70s who achieved so much, yet that early trauma came back to haunt her. It is a story of transcending the past and moving towards the future, and well worth a review. This show was first aired in July 2022 Where are you in life with the big emotional bricks like shame and guilt? Do you reflect on past events or experience these feelings in current relationships? For most of us, this stuff is part of our makeup; we are unaware of it. Having listened to my guest on the show today, I became conscious of my shame and guilt for past actions and how I have used shame in my family interactions. My guest on the show has always been a pioneer. Lois Hollis is in her late 70s, deeply connected to God and her faith, and driven by a calling that started in childhood. Her early years were tough. With physical abuse at home, she received multiple head and neck injuries. One of these occasions led to a near-death experience where she received her calling. At church, she was preached into guilt and shame to find her sins; the teachers at school punished her for dyslexia. Her solace was tap dancing. She loved tap dancing, and she tells me it was tap dancing that pulled her through. It worked because she finished high school, applied to nursing school at the University of Pennsylvania, and received a scholarship. At college, Lois earned an RN and BSN nursing degree and went on to a job at Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia. Her creative approach to problems was recognised, and she was invited to join a programme that went on to develop the first Kidney Hemorrhage Units in the USA in 1966. She became a pioneer of the kidney dialysis foundation, stayed in the programme for ten years, leaving it behind to have a family, and was blessed with three daughters. Then life took a turn. Now in her 40s, she experienced headaches that became migraine that developed into a range of other life-threatening problems. It reached a point where she was told she would not live beyond her 50s. Those childhood traumas and physical abuse had a price it was discovered there were broken bones in her neck and back. Our conversation concerns physical, mental, and spiritual recovery and a wonderfully inspiring journey. Today Lois Hollis works with shame and guilt as an independent study. She is bringing new knowledge of these misunderstood conditions. She is a filmmaker, author of 3 books, a speaker and a coach. Ep 521Befriend Your Inner Voice: Harnessing Self-Talk for a Happier Life
Harnessing your self-talk. Have you ever thought about that little voice in your head? You know, the one that pops up most randomly, whether you’re doing something you maybe shouldn’t be or just indulging yourself. Well, guess what? We all have it, and it’s more influential than you might think! In this bite-sized episode, I’m diving into the world of our inner voices. Inspired by the work of Ethan Cross, a psychology professor at the University of Michigan, we’ll explore how this internal chatter shapes our lives. From reminding us to pick up milk at the store to holding us back with guilt and shame, our inner voice can be both a friend and a foe. I’ll share some personal stories, like how my father’s inner voice replayed old regrets, and offer insights into how you can transform this voice into a positive force. We’ll discuss practical tools from Ethan’s book "Chatter" and techniques like distancing yourself from negative thoughts and using self-talk to boost your confidence. Join me on this reflective journey, and let’s learn to make friends with our inner voice. When we do, we unlock a powerful ally who can help us achieve our goals and live a more fulfilling life. Ep 520Mindfulness Unveiled: The Power of Being Present
Hey there! Welcome to another life, passion, and business shortcast with me, Paul Harvey, your friendly midlife coach. Over the years, I've had the pleasure of chatting with hundreds of folks, and one thing has become crystal clear: our stories shape our lives. Everything we do, feel, or experience is based on the narratives we create. Today, we’re reflecting on mindfulness. Have you noticed how it’s everywhere these days? But what does it actually mean, and is there any real value to it? Mindfulness has seeped into my life over the past five or six years, and I find it incredibly valuable. It’s often linked with Buddhism, emphasizing awareness and being present. However, I recently listened to a podcast called "People I Mostly Admire" with Steve Levitt, where he spoke with Ellen Langer, a Harvard professor known as the mother of mindfulness. She’s been working on this for about 40 years! Ellen’s take on mindfulness is fascinating. Unlike the meditative practices from Buddhist traditions, her version is about being present in your daily life. It’s about being mindful of the moment, which is the foundation of all my coaching. Our brains naturally tend to disengage to save energy, like when we tune out during a familiar drive to work. Ellen advocates for being more mindful of our actions, which makes us more alive. She conducted a groundbreaking experiment where elderly men lived as if it were 1959, and their health improved dramatically. It’s worth checking out her work, especially her new book, "The Mindful Body: Thinking Our Way to Chronic Health." This concept of mindfulness resonates deeply with me, especially when I’m running. If I focus on my goal with confidence, I achieve it with ease. Doubt, however, makes everything harder. This principle applies to all areas of life. By seeing the world with fresh eyes, we keep ourselves young and vibrant. Ellen suggests noticing new things about people and places to keep our minds engaged and alive. Her insights remind us that being mindful opens up a world of possibilities. So this week, why not give mindfulness a try? See how it changes your perspective and brings the world to life. And if you want more inspiration, check out the podcast episode with Jeannie Blasberg. Her story is full of attention to detail and rich experiences. As always, thank you for joining me on this journey. Your comments and feedback mean the world to me. Ep 519The Author and Regenerative Farmer: Jeanne Blasberg
When I think about my guest on the show, I think of personal leadership, commitment, and making a difference. She inspires me on at least two, possibly three, counts because she is an athlete, a novelist, and a regenerative farmer. I recognise a fellow polymath. As an only child, Jeanne Blasberg spent a lot of time alone. Her parents gave her a lot of independence, and she credits this time with igniting her love for storytelling and nurturing her creativity. To this day, she can juggle and close up magic. Heading college, she went for the humanities, with American Studies, so you would never have guessed she would end up on Wall Street as a baby banker. That means the grunt worker for the banking industry. It has served her well in writing, her work in nonprofits, and now, her work at the regenerative farm. Banking in the 1980s was volatile, so it was worth taking when a job opportunity came up in the same city as her husband's career move. Sinsinattie was a bit of a jump from New York, but her timing was good, as the bank that she left was taken over and effectively closed. The new job was a challenge, but opened opportunities. After her first child, the family moved back to Boston. The skills she gained from that job led to writing case studies for Harvard Business School. Now a full-time Mum, she competed in athletics, Worked in non-profits, and held the Chair of US Squash. Somewhere in that list, she found the time to read and explore her creativity in writing groups, and the ideas for her first novel arrived. That book was published in 2017 and called “Eden” and followed in 2019 by “The Nine” This is a lovely conversation with a woman who is a polymath. She can turn her attention to anything and make it happen. She is a deep thinker and has many tools for living a good life. We cover all of the usual questions, including why, when most people are looking to retire, she and her husband have effectively gone back to school to learn how to work the land. However, she is clearly passionate about wellness, the food system, and the healing aspect of nature because it inspires her writing. Just 18 months back, they bought a 420-acre regenerative farm in SW Wisconsin called Flynn Creek Farm. In April this year, she released her third novel, DAUGHTER OF A PROMISE; she co-chairs the Boston Book Festival and serves on the Executive Committee of GrubStreet, a preeminent creative writing centre in Boston. Of course, she is the CEO of Flynn Creek Farm. The week we step back a year and rediscover my conversation with Jon Rennie, he was a submariner on a nuclear submarine during the Cold War. Our podcast is about the transition between services and civic street. However, it is also about the application of a leadership style. Today, Jon Rennie runs a successful business that manufactures critical components for electrical utilities. He’s also a podcast host and the author of three books on leadership. Jon was born to a family in Manchester, New Hampshire, just north of Boston. It is a blue-collar town, and people do not leave. He was born to young parents with equally young grandparents. His Grandfathers had both served in WW2 and talked fondly of military service. While John was born to a loving family, life was abundant, but funds were limited, and his father extolled the virtue of getting to college. That opportunity would only be possible with a scholarship. He was fascinated by engineering and submarines and expressed the idea of becoming a serving officer. Nobody wants to be an officer on a submarine. The high school career person was surprised but did his research and found an opportunity. The Navy had a scholarship degree program, which led to officer training. He got accepted, did his four years of college, achieved an engineering degree, and entered the Navy as a commissioned officer. Our conversation is a fascinating insight into the life of a nuclear submarine, but it’s more than that. It’s what John learned from his experience in the military and how we took that out into the business world. I often hear from people who have served that transitioning between service life and Civic Street is tough. Jon struggled for seven years until he applied his navy principles to his work; the rest is history. He led eight manufacturing businesses for three global companies for 22 years until he started his own business manufacturing company producing critical components for electrical utilities. He has written three books on leadership and hosts the Deep Leadership podcast. There are many lessons to be learned here. But the biggest challenge we discussed in detail is to start a business does not mean creating a job. Ep 510The Gift of Asking for Help: Embracing Support and Collaboration
Can you ask for help? Have you ever noticed how there are two types of people in this world? Those who can easily ask for help, and those fiercely independent souls like myself. My dad was the same way, always wanting to do things independently, even when he was struggling. It’s something I inherited, but boy, does it make life harder sometimes! ( It's funny, having processed this show for you, I realised I did not ask for your help. See the note at the end. ) We humans are meant to collaborate and share tasks—that’s what makes us so successful. But somewhere along the line, many of us became too proud to ask for help. My car was off the road this week, so I had to ask for a ride to Inverness. It felt weird, but you know what? The person I asked was genuinely happy to help, and we had a great day together. It got me thinking: why do we resist asking for help so much? Whether a big life challenge or a simple task, we all need support sometimes. I see this all the time as a coach—people banging their heads against the same wall, refusing to ask for help to get through it. There’s no big revelation here, just a reminder: sometimes we have to surrender and ask for that support. So, where in your life are you struggling, and could you use some help? Maybe it’s a decision you need to make or physical support for a task. Don’t ignore it or procrastinate. Just ask for help—it might solve the problem and let you move on to the next thing. Trust me, it’s worth it! So, how could you help me? Write a comment, Ask a question, or tell me about your experience asking for help. The links to focus coaching are below. Each of us is looking for a solution to heal our ailments and improve our lives. This podcast documents my health and wellness journey. Where would I be without Running and Yoga? I was speaking to a client this week about the power of Eastern methodologies like Tai Chi and Qi Gong. I have experienced both and enjoyed them. That conversation stayed with me and reminded me of my conversation with Rich Morley. As with all of these podcast conversations, they are timeless and worth a relisten. If you are looking for focus coaching the link is here. Rich Morley and the healing power of Tai Chi. Ep 500Simplify to Thrive: Embracing Less for a Fuller Life
Today, we're diving into the intriguing concept of simplicity vs. complexity. Have you ever noticed how we naturally tend to add more stuff to our lives instead of taking things away? Let's explore why that is and how we can shift our mindset to embrace simplicity. This week, I was fascinated by a conversation on the Hidden Brain podcast with Leidy Klotz, a professor at Virginia University. He shared a story about building blocks with his child. He would tend towards adding blocks while his son would take them away. It got me thinking about our cultural tendencies to complicate things and how we might benefit from doing the opposite. Do we need all this complexity, or is there a way to live more meaningfully by stripping back? What are we hiding from or masking with the complexity? Join me as I reflect on my life and the accumulated clutter, especially in our busy schedules. I'll share insights on how saying 'no' can empower and how Eastern philosophies like Buddhism advocate for a simpler, more focused existence. Whether it's our personal lives or business strategies, sometimes less truly is more. So, here's my invitation to you: take a moment to look at your life and see where you might be adding unnecessary complexity. Could you simplify things and find more joy in the process? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this, so feel free to reach out. Let's chat and maybe even have a conversation about how you can simplify your life, too. The links to focus coaching are below. Ep 494The Science of Spirituality with Lisa Miller
Here is a reupload from 2020 event on spirituality, it is a fascinating conversation and so worth a revisit. The Science of Spirituality is a talk with Dr Lisa Miller. Is spirituality good for us, and are there benefits to be found from a spiritual practice? We often talk about intuition on the podcast, and many people in business and life will talk about having a gut feeling or being guided to an outcome. These conversations inspired my wife and me to host on the subject at the end of 2020, one of three we did that year. Spirit-duality was an exploration of religion and spirituality in life and business. Dr Lisa Miller is a scientist who specialises in spirituality and phycology. I thought to share it with you today, partly because the conversation is insightful. Dr Miller is the author of 3 books and numerous peer-reviewed papers on spirituality and health. She is highly respected, having advised governments, investment banks and even the military looking at how a connected view of the world has physical and mental health benefits. I hope you enjoy the Science of Spirituality talk; it is one of many that can be found in the spirituality event. Ep 493Understanding and Managing Your Lens of Perspective
This episode explores our 'lens of perspective' and its powerful role in framing our life experiences. Our worldview is derived entirely from the stories we narrate to ourselves. That is how we unconsciously guide our perceptions and experiences. In this short conversation, we explore the importance of consciously monitoring our narratives to ensure they align with a positive, empowering outlook on the world. In this discussion. I share a few personal anecdotes and scenarios, demonstrating how perspective can drastically alter the interpretation of an event. We highlight the idea that our perspective is often influenced by past experiences. Our brains are not picky and happy to interpret our present reality by drawing on references from the past or other untrusted sources. This leads to the realization that we often view the world through a lens of past experiences, unknowingly to us. There are solutions. Like incorporating mindfulness into our lives by observing our feelings from a detached viewpoint, preventing us from spiralling into negative emotions. The Upwards Spiral Using the spiral process, it is possible to manage and maintain an upward direction in mood by using meditation, regular exercise, and journaling. The fact is that life has its ups and downs, and there will be inevitable lows. It is at these times that managing our mood and expectations will keep up from becoming overwhelmed. The episode is an essential exploration of a significant facet of our psychology and a practical guide on managing one's perspectives to lead a balanced, fulfilling life. Ep 492Graham Brown : Creating Your Story
This show was last released in March 2022. At the time, it was called 3 Plane Tickets and No Plans. Listening to it again, it is very much about building a life out of the narrative that we want to live. The point is to remember that we will create that narrative consciously or unconsciously, which is why it is so important to become the driver and not the passenger. If you want help with that check out the link here Back to Graham and those plane tickets. Some of us dream about dropping everything and taking off, but what happens when you do, and more to the point, what makes an entrepreneur with a growing business cash it all in, get on a plane with his family and become a nomad? Our show is about the call to adventure. Sometimes it takes a wake-up call to see life for what it is, “fragile”. We assume it will continue forever, and the story will play out well. In reality, we cannot make those assumptions; all we can do is live our best life by taking control of the story. Graham Brown was a star in the telecoms industry and a leader in data research and trends. But his father's death made him ask the important questions and give it all up for three plane tickets and no plans. As you will hear, life in paradise is not all Instagram moments. Graham is a gentle soul that has learnt much on his travels, above all, it was the importance of finding your story. Today Graham has produced over 1500 podcasts, written 4 books, speaks live on podcasts and helps major brands define and tell their story. Let's join the conversation with Graham Brown. Ep 491The Red Mist of Anger
We have all felt the red mist of anger descend at some point, a moment when all reason gets lost, and silly things happen. Society has a difficult relationship with the expression of anger. At its best it is a powerful fuel for change, motivated action. The world is still full of anger, and aggressive actions are taken in anger that really lead to good outcomes. When will we learn to deal with the expression of our power? The show explores why we experience anger and how it can potentially shape our perspectives and actions in life. Ther are many examples where it is a force for good. The root of anger is the unmet need or perception of transgression. It is about filters and values that originate from societal or cultural factors. The transgression of these views and values can trigger outrage and a sense of injustice, leading to its expression in acts of violence. Conversely, societal or cultural factors can just as easily influence how we perceive or suppress anger, which is just as unhealthy as violent expression. Avoiding The Red Mist of Anger The safe expression of our anger and frustration is the action of a healthy, well-adjusted person. Because there is a price for unexpressed emotion and anecdotal evidence for the damaging impact of pent-up anger on our health and relationships. That is why it is important to deal with frustration early on before it escalates to a full-scale rage. The row that ensures follows the burning of a piece to toast has nothing to do with the toast. Full disclosure: I am not an anger specialist and would always refer someone with issues of this kind for professional support. But we can all benefit from being clear about what makes us angry and finding safe ways to express it. As with anything good, if you have enjoyed it, please share it with a friend. Ep 490Jeff Hardy : To Care for Peace
Our guest on the show was 19 when he enlisted in the US Coast Guard reserve as a hospital corpsman trainee. He was sent to Government Island in San Francisco Bay to help and care for the troops returning from Vietnam and the Mekon Delta. It was a life-changing event for this young man. He discovered how caring and peace are fundamentally connected. It set a career in the caring profession, not as a nurse or doctor but as a planner. He went on to become a planning and design consultant. He facilitated innovative management operations and new facility development for more than 120 hospitals all over the USA. His skill set was in demand outside the US, and he and his wife travelled the world advising hospitals and care facilities. His work was about creating environments for optimal patient and staff care. . Over his 40-year career, he has set up facilities worldwide, working in Vietnam, Nigeria, Kenya, and many others. He was particularly proud of his work in Myanmar, where they created a system to serve remote communities. Jeff is now retired from the business he created and spends time writing and speaking on podcast stages. He believed that humanity needs a second evolution that leads to deep peace, which can only be found through caring. We cover my usual question, but our conversation concerns the human bond of caring and community. It was about how society must learn from the past and stop repeating our history. Jeff encapsulated his thoughts on caring and peace in his first book. To care for peace - a global mandate to secure the second human evolution in perpetuity—THE PROCESS IS THE SOLUTION, In his opinion, it is a process. Ep 488Jonathon Nazario and his Book Society
A flashback to January 2021 with Jonathan Nazario: I was looking for a show to reshare with you today, and I wondered what happened to Jonathan, given we are three years on. At the time of recording, Jonathon was 17. The book is still available on Amazon, but his social chnnels look dormant. I have reached out, and I will see what transpires. If you are interested in Focus coaching the link is here, and at the bottom. ______________________________________________________ This podcast brings a different perspective to my usual conversations because, unlike most of my guests, Jonathon Nazario is just 17 years old, which, from my (57-year-old) perspective, is the very beginning of life’s experiences. His book is called Society, The World In Which We Live and is a self-help philosophical mix that is his take on the world, highlighting human behaviour, education, and the business world. When this young author approached me through one of the podcast matching sites. I have to admit, my old cynic reared its head and said “What can a 17-year-old possibly know about Life, Passion and Business?” Intrigued to know more, I followed through with an introductory chat that turned into a refreshing conversation and an invitation to come on the podcast. In this programme, we discuss his personal view of success, contribution, and the meaning of life. Jonathon has big plans for the future and a vision that includes exceeding his personal expectations. Despite being an old cynic, it is refreshing to hear the perspective of one so young. With his positive mindset, Jonathon will likely fulfil his vision, and I hope I have the opportunity to catch up with him again in 10 years to see how things are going. If you want to catch up with Jonathon Nazario, you can find his book on Amazon.com. Given that we are three years old, the social links seem to be dormant. Ep 486Peace Purpose and Happiness with Maya Manseau
Our conversation is a healing journey about finding peace, purpose and happiness. It is a story of family values and grief, an example of a life of change and progression. Maya Manseau grew up watching courtroom dramas and wanted to become a lawyer. Looking for the right college degree for the legal profession, a family friend advised her to get a technical degree. She became an associate in electrical engineering in the 1980s when not many women were taking those classes. She learned a lot about how to stand her ground and tell rude jokes with the boys. By the time she left college, her legal career was forgotten. Going into the world, her career path followed the growth of the computer industry. Changing Values Many years later, she was travelling the US with a successful sales career when circumstances pushed her to reevaluate her life. She needed more time for her family. Two close family members were struggling with health issues, and her teenage daughter was growing up fast, and she was missing the journey. The time was right to make a move. She started a wedding photography business, and it flew. It did well, and her daughters joined her in the business. Together, they had nine wonderful years creatively recording the magical wedding days of couples across the US. But in 2013, it all changed; Lindsey, her oldest daughter, developed leukaemia and died within the year, and so began the third and current iteration of Maya Manseau’s life. Since her daughter’s passing, she has written two books “Living Intentionally After Loss: Passion and Purpose and Navigating the Small Business Path. Peace Purpose and Happiness Her daughter Lindsey was instrumental in Maya’s new career, which they created together in the last few months of her life. Our conversation is about that journey and what she discovered on the way. Ep 484Are You Listening? Reflections from a Midlife Coach
Join Paul Harvey, a midlife coach, as he takes you on a journey of exploration of one of life's most essential skill sets - listening. For Paul, this weekend has revealed one of the fundamental aspects of listening: it is the block that changes our inability to hear what is being said. This conversation is a thoughtful reflection on the art of listening, with personal experiences from his coach training and an analysis of how often we misinterpret information or fail to listen altogether. listening isn’t just a passive action but is a skill we must hone and work at to make our interactions truly meaningful. He also shares an enlightening perspective on how our experience and history can often hinder our ability to listen completely. The episode doesn't stop there but also addresses how this 'not listening' can manifest in other aspects of our lives due to resistance stemming from our fundamental beliefs or values. Struggles with change, weight, and overall personal development are just some of the many areas of life where this principle holds and is undoubtedly worth examining. This show reflects on the larger implications of our human inability to listen because we do not want to because of what it might mean if we did. Paul suggests a new world of inquiry and invites listeners to do the same. He challenges the listeners to identify and address their own blind spots, which can potentially unlock their path forward.
