Technology is a double-edged sword; it can be used to build and maintain physical/digital Second Realms in pursuance of freedom and autonomy, but it can also be a dangerous tool in the hands of tyrants. Thankfully, crypto-anarchists are far better at technology than your average government agent, which puts us Second Realmers at a huge advantage. In the near future, freedom pioneers and freedom seekers will have protected temporary autonomous zones to exercise their autonomy to the fullest, without the risk or threat of First Realm/bludgie intervention (some of these exist today, actually). Having these Second Realms will be a giant leap forward for the cause of personal autonomy and freedom, but it’s important to not become complacent: Even if “we” are living free, the First Realm is still out there and is sternly against the existence of “our” free enclaves. Therefore, it’s crucially important to have strategies to minimize risk and personal harm if any of “our” people are swept up by the government agents of the First Realm: in the Second Realm, this is known as tradecraft, or the art of implementing the objectives of “Need to Know.” What is tradecraft? How can it be applied? How does it differ from security culture, if at all? What are some potential downsides to a society/culture practicing tradecraft and how they can be avoided? Most everyone is familiar with organized criminal syndicates, whether it be the mafia, the mob, the Yakuza, etc. They are typically viewed as violent, chaotic, criminal organizations constantly under attack and surveillance by the federal government. The latter may be the most truthful accusation leveled, but believe it or not, there is a lot libertarians and anarchists can learn from organized crime as they build Second Realms. This is something none-other than Dr. Murray Rothbard recognized (p. 295), in addition to Smuggler and XYZ, the authors of Second Realm: Book on Strategy. Not only have these organizations existed for centuries, but they have flourished; they have their own internal arbitration system, private defense and security, they utilize temporary autonomous zones to make them more invulnerable to coercion, and they have similar ethical and moral codes that are strictly adhered to; a sort of parallel society to put it another way. It’s worth noting that, as strict as some of their moral and ethical codes may have been, they still participate in behavior that violates personal autonomy; we are not overlooking this, but rather honing in on our focus on the relevant material. Back in the 1960s, Rayo came up with the concept of import-export, a form of one-directional isolation wherein a vonuan can maintain access to the servile society’s open-but-not-free trading centers while denying them access to a vonuan’s home base. Reason being, an alternative economy did not yet exist, and therefore, a lot of necessary products and services were not available in the Second Realm. New to vonu/Rayo? START HERE! Proponents of Second Realms also saw this as being an issue and came up with a similar solution in how to facilitate said interaction with the First Realm: a proxy merchant, or an individual/entrepreneur specialized in trade and interaction between the realms.
