During the Cold War, the United States Navy began constructing an elaborate underwater grid of listening devices, called hydrophones, throughout the ocean floor. When the grid was later given to oceanographers to use in environmental research, a strange, unexplained noise would be picked up on two hydrophones 3,000 miles apart. The week before the Christmas of 1996, a mysterious unidentified female body was found next to a miniature Christmas tree in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery. In the 1880s, brothers August and Herman Schuenemann decided to pursue their dreams of becoming ship captains and move together from their hometown in rural Wisconsin to the mean streets of Chicago. Through hard work and grit, they were both eventually able to sail as captains in the most dangerous kind of work available at the time: Christmas Tree Ships. What made this work so dangerous, was that they would be sailing the tumultuous waters of Lake Michigan from Chicago to northern Michigan’s evergreen forests to harvest trees to bring back to the city for Christmas. Very few ships were willing to make this journey as the ice, snow, and winter gales caused dangerous storms on the lake during this time of the year. On May 20, 1967 in Canada's Whiteshell Provincial Park, a Polish man named Stefan Michalak encounters a UFO while prospecting for quartz. Welcome to Episode 89! For our third episode of Spooky Szn 2021, we decided to have on our good friend Reina Scully to school us in the spookiest of Japanese Folklore! This week, we discuss "Kokkuri San", "Hitobashira", "Teke Teke", "Tomino's Hell", and "Kuchisake Onna" in a very special episode of Japanese-themed hauntings. Kokkuri: Kokkuri, or Kokkuri-san, refers to a paranormal game of divination, similar to the American Ouija Board. The word kokkuri refers to the game, the actual physical apparatus, and kokkuri-san refers to the being that is summoned that is considered by the Japanese to be some sort of animal spirit that is a mix between a fox, dog, and raccoon. The game is played by writing characters on a piece of paper (much like a Ouija Board) and moving a coin around the board instead of a planchette. Hitobashira: Hitobashira refers to a cultural practice of human sacrifice used formerly in Japan, in addition to many other eastern and southeastern countries found in Asia, wherein humans were buried alive near large-scale construction projects (such as castles, bridges, and dams) as an offering to the gods to keep the structure safe from harm. Teke Teke: Teke Teke is a Japanese urban legend about the ghost of a schoolgirl whose body was cut in half when she was run over by a train in a mysterious accident. Due to the unfortunate circumstances of her demise, her ghost is doomed to roam urban areas using only her hands and elbows since her lower half no longer exists. The dragging of her torso across the ground makes a “teke teke” noise similar to a skittering or scratching noise. She carries around a large scythe that she uses to chop unsuspecting passers-by in half. Tomino’s Hell: Written by Japanese poet Saijo Yaso at the end of WWI, “Tomino's Hell” is a dark and unsettling poem believed to curse, or even kill, anyone who reads it out loud. Kuchisake Onna: Kuchisake-onna, meaning “Slit-Mouthed Woman”, is a popular urban legend about a malicious spirit who wears a mask to cover her mouth. She stops strangers in the night and asks “Do you think I’m beautiful?” Regardless of the answer (except in rare circumstances), she will tear off her mask, revealing her mutilated mouth, before killing the stranger. This week Nat leads Aly down a rabbit hole about Ancient Egyptian curses! Even before humans could translate the hieroglyphs on ancient Egyptian tombs, rumors existed that curses were written on the entrance to a Pharaoh's final resting place. The most famous of ancient Egyptian curses was enacted in 1922 after the discovery of King Tutankhamen's 3,300 year old sealed tomb. 9 of the 52 people present at the tomb's opening ended up dying of sudden illness or freak accidents immediately following the opening of the tomb. SKIP TO 17:00 TO GET TO THE STORY Happy first episode of Spooky Season! This week, Aly tells Nat all about the most blood-soaked building in all of Austria: Moosham Castle. Built into a mountain in the forested countryside of Unternberg, this medieval spur castle has been the site of at least 45 battles between 1191 and 1675, including the infamously brutal German Peasants' War. If the bloodshed from multiple wars wasn't haunted enough for you, Moosham Castle was also the location of the imprisonment, trial, torture, and execution of the victims of the Zaubererjackl Witch Trials of 1681. These witch trials are set apart in history due to the demographic of its victims: 109 villagers were executed in just one year, with the majority being children and men. Following the witch trials, werewolf trials were held in this same area, leading to the execution and torture of even more men. Today, the castle has been preserved by a private buyer and remains open to the public as a piece of historical architecture; the torture room still intact with the original tools and instruments used against the werewolves and witches of Austria. Reports of ghostly apparitions and anguished screams still haunt the castle grounds, are you brave enough to step inside? This week, Aly tells Nat all about the supernatural role crossroads play in nearly all cultures around the globe. In Italy, you can use a crossroads to spot deceased loved ones walking in a ghostly procession. In the Highlands of Scotland, you can sit on a three-legged stool in a crossroads to figure out which of your neighbors will die during the next year. In the U.S., you can perform a ritual to conjure the devil himself at a crossroads. In London, the corpses of criminals and those who died by suicide were buried at crossroads, thereby preventing the souls of the deceased from leaving that area. From hellhounds to “money cats” to demons to poltergeists to “humpbacked mannikins”, all manner of supernatural creatures and spirits can be found at a crossroads.
