Ep 218Episode 218: Ministry Talk with James Metsger (Wade Has Friends!)
00:00 - Introduction 00:00 - Free-for-All (No Free-for-All) 21:30 - Main Topic (Ministry Talk with James Metsger) Wade has friends, or at least a friend! In this episode we prove it. In episode TWO HUNDRED AND EIGHTEEN, Jason and Wade talk to Pastor James Metsger of Christ Point in Charlotte, North Carolina, one of Wade's best friends since high school. This was our first attempt at hosting a remote guest with the new equipment, and Wade was thrilled and grateful that James was able to be that first guest. While they took different paths and serve in different denominations (Wade is Lutheran and James is not Lutheran, and lets Wade refer to him as a Baptist for purposes of the episode, and because he knows from decades of experience that Wade is going to say what he wants no matter what), they both found their way into ministry. After years of talking about recording something, they finally did, and talked about their experiences and lessons learned since their days together in their youth. Jason adds perspective from his ministry as well, and gets to bond with James under the cross of friendship with Wade. We hope you enjoy the episode! We are grateful to the 1517 podcasting network. Ep 217Episode 217: Promise and Curses, Anthropology, Part 5 (Genesis 3)
00:00 - Introduction 00:00 - Free-for-All (No Free-for-All) 9:30 - Main Topic (Promise and Curses: Genesis 3) In episode TWO HUNDRED AND SEVENTEEN, Mike, Jason, and Wade continue the guys' discussion of anthropology. We focus especially upon the relationship between God's promise and the curses at the end of Genesis 3 and how the gospel predominates, even in this darkest moment in mankind's history, the fall into sin, when death came into the world. They also test out new equipment, which we got a while ago, but Wade just now finally figured out. We hope it improves the sound of the podcast and it will make having guests on remotely way easier, so get ready for some fun guests. We had a guest or two lined up this week, but the weather put an end to that. Please feel free to email the weather to complain. As you'll notice, we can now incorporate sound effects, too, which Wade maybe enjoys too much. We hope you enjoy the episode! We are grateful to the 1517 podcasting network. We begin to delve into some of the recent writings issued and measures taken by Pope Francis in this regard, but will really get into the pertinent documents more in the follow-up episode. So, what's up with the fight about Roman Masses, TLM or Novus Ordo? Why should Lutherans care about it? What can we learn from it? What's the history? Should Luther be blamed for it all? What does it say about the relationship between religion and culture? Should the boomers be blamed for it all? We get into this and other topics as we try to make sense of things. Ep 189Episode 189: The Guys Get Feisty: The Lord's Supper: A Thesis
00:00 - Introduction 00:00 - Free-for-All (No Free-for-All) 08:30 - Main Topic (The Lord's Supper: A Thesis) In episode ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY-NINE, Mike and Wade get feisty. They've been doing this podcast for a long time now, and they figure they've earned the right to be a little blunt. Without letting Mike know beforehand, Wade chose the topic for the episode, knowing it would lead to vigorous discussion. Wade introduces a simple thesis: The Lord's Supper is the very body and blood of Christ, given for the forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation. If that thesis is true, what does that mean for Christian theology, the Christian life, the divine service, piety, etc.? Once Wade winds Mike up, they give the topic a good go. There's a lot more to discuss here, but this is what came to mind first. We hope you enjoy the conversation! If the guys get you worked up, too, maybe that's not a bad thing. It's an opportunity to step back and ask why that is. Maybe it's because the guys were feisty and talking nonsense, but maybe not...? Oh, John wanders in halfway through the episode, because he was the worship coordinator for the district convention held at the college. After a few minutes, it was pretty clear he realized the guys were worked up. Kudos him for handling things so pastorally at the end when Wade insisted he jump on a mic before things wrapped up. For the free-for-all, we discuss what saint we'd name a church after if we were starting a new church. You get some serious answers and some less serious. We hope you enjoy the conversation! Wingin' It 187.1: Life after Luther (Part 66) – The Luther Series Finale!
In the SIXTY-SIXTH session of our Wingin' It series on the Life of Luther, Wade and Mike wrap things up. This series started in December of 2018. It has been quite the undertaking, but very beneficial for both of the guys as they've worked through everything. Even if you've not listened to the series so far, the finale is worth checking out, as they discuss why Luther matters, his place today, what his lasting contributions to the church have been, and the dangers of trying to "play Luther," among other things We hope you enjoy the session and, if you haven't, maybe check out the series. There is one "earmuffs" moment, but Wade gives ample warning beforehand, so don't blame him if you hear a colorful word. If you need to blame someone, blame Jason for not being there to keep order. 00:00 - Introduction 12:00 - Free-for-All (Lutheran Stuff Lutherans Say Is Too "Catholic") 24:30 - Main Topic (The Guys Get Catholic) In episode ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY-SEVEN, Mike, Wade, and Jason (enjoy him here, because he's off to travel the world and won't be with us for a while) discuss catholicity and why Lutherans are at their best when they are their most catholic (for instance, with the Augsburg Confession). The guys discuss how we should be catholic in liturgy, music, art, history, and other ways, if we want to be truly Lutheran as the reformers conceived of their theology and mission. 00:00 - Introduction 00:00 - No Free-for-All 05:50 - Main Topic (Uniquely Stupid, and the Importance of Community and Formation) In episode ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY-SIX, Mike and Wade discuss an article in the Atlantic by Jonathan Haidt, which leads to a discussion of the importance and community and formation, and why the Lutheran Church, and Christian Church in general, is in dire need of a rediscovery of both. This turned into a really helpful conversation for the two of us and may lead to a few more episodes. We hope you enjoy the conversation! We are grateful to the 1517 podcasting network.
