I'm also a little nervous as my county in Ireland are playing in the All-Ireland Hurling final today in Dublin so hopefully Tipperary can win that one. Now across the other side of the world is Damon in Tokyo - how are things Damon? DB: Hi Damian. Things are good here. As for the weather, still hot and humid. Football Language Podcast: From the Archive – 2018 Champions League Final – The Good, the Bad , and the Ugly

Football Language Podcast: From the Archive a€“ 2018 Champions League Final - The Good, the Bad , and the Ugly: We continue our run up to the Champions League final with another post from our archive. This time from 2018 and the Champions League final between Liverpool and Real Madrid. Football Language Podcast: From the Archive - 2018 Champions League Final - The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Introduction DB: Welcome to languagecaster.com and our look back at the Champions League finals in past years. My name's Damon, and thanks for dropping in and listening to our series of archive posts in the build up to the Champions League final of 2019. This post from our Champions League final archive is a bit painful for me. Maybe that's why it was only Damian that recorded the podcast. My team, Liverpool, lost the final against Real Madrid, and I must admit it took a while for me to recover. Anyway, here is Damian looking over the game and picking out what was good, bad, and ugly! 2018 Champions League Final: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly Introduction DF: Hello everyone, my name is Damian and I am here in a very sunny London the day after the 2018 Champions League final between Liverpool and Real Madrid in which Madrid won their 13th title - that's six ahead of the second most successful side in European Cup/Champions League history, thata€™s AC Milan. Madrid won 3-1 in a pulsating game - a really exciting match - which had a little bit of everything: goals, howlers, tears and controversies. So, in this audio report, I am going to review some of the good, the bad and the ugly from the 2018 Champions League final.A If you'd like the transcript to this report - great for learners and teachers of English - please show your support by becoming a patron (through Patreon) and if you have questions or comments, then you can email us at: [email protected] (Damian=DF). Good As we have already mentioned, Real Madrid have now won 13 European Cup/Champions League titles in total and have also won three titles in a row, three consecutive years. They are the first side to win a triple since Bayern Munich did it between 1974 and 1976; indeed they've won four out of the last five titles. Their manager, Zinedine Zidane, has been in charge for all three of those Champions League wins and is the first manager to win three titles in a row and is now ranked as the most successful Champions League manager along with Liverpool's Bob Paisley and Carlo Ancelotti, for AC Milan and Real Madrid, with those three wins. It was also a good, no great, night for Gareth Bale who came off the bench to score one of the best ever goals in a Champions League final to put Madrid 2-1 up in the 64th minute. The Welsh superstar's overhead kick flew into the top corner (or the top bin) giving the keeper no chance at all only 120 seconds after coming onto the pitch. He then rounded off the night with another strike - from nearly 40 yards - to win the man-of-the-match award and seal the 3-1 win for Los Blancos with his brace. Bad It was not a good night at all for Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius who was at fault for two of the three Madrid goals. His howler in the 51st minute, when his lack of concentration when throwing the ball out, allowed Karim Benzema to open the scoring for Real Madrid. This lack of concentration returned in the 83rd minute when the German keeper let the ball slip through his hands from Gareth Bale's long-range effort. Yes, the ball moved in the air but this was a regulation save and this mistake, or gaffe, ended the game for Liverpool. A bad night for the Liverpool keeper. Ugly There were so many incidents in this action-packed game that it might be easy to forget that there was a pitch invader - someone who ran onto the field - in injury time when Real's Ronaldo was about to shoot. He was stopped by stewards but this was poor from the security at the stadium and could have been a very ugly moment. Most fans and pundits would agree that Mo Salah's injury in the 30th minute was a turning point in the game after the Egyptian striker fell and damaged his shoulder following a tackle from Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos. It appeared that Ramos held on to Salah's arm for too long which may have been a factor in the injury. The Spanish defender did not further endear himself to Liverpool fans as he also hit the Liverpool keeper Karius with his elbow in an off-the-ball incident and theatrically went down after a tackle from Liverpool striker Mane that earned the Senegalese player a yellow card. Ramos is a winner but at times his on-the-field performances overstep the mark. Pretty ugly. You are listening to languagecaster.com (in Urdu) DB: I remember the match well. I was watching in a bar, Once, in Tokyo with equal Real Madrid and Liverpool supporters, and I believed we could overcome the set back of that first goal - Karius' howler. Mane scored and things looked much better

Football Language Podcast: From the Archive – 2015 Champions League Pre and Post Match

Football Language Podcast: From the Archive a€“ 2015 Champions League Final Pre and Post Game: We continue our run up to the Champions League final with another post from our archive. This time from 2015 and the Champions League final between Barcelona and Juventus. Football Language Podcast: From the Archive - 2015 Champions League Pre and Post Match Introduction DB: You are listening to languagecaster.com's football-language podcast. Hi everyone. My namea€™s Damon and thank you for joining me for this look back into the archives. We take a look at a podcast from 2015 and the Champions League final between Barcelona and Juventus a€“ two powerhouses of the game, especially in their respective countries. Both of these teams, considering their domestic dominance, however, were desperate to get more glory in Europe. This podcast was recorded in Tokyo with me and Damian talking before the game and then with reactions after the match. From the archive - DF: Hello everybody, my namea€™s Damian. DB: And Ia€™m Damon. DF: And wea€™re here in Tokyo Japan. DB: And wea€™re here for a very special occasion. Wea€™re going to be watching the Champions League final. DF: Yes, the biggest club football match in Europe, in the world, is taking place between Barcelona and Juventus. DB: Thata€™s right. And ita€™s going to be the end to our ninth season, and what better way to end the season with such a big game, and both teams of course are going for the treble. Thata€™s amazing. DF: Thata€™s right. So, Barcelona have already won the Copa del Rey and the La Liga title. And Juventus have won the Italian Series A title and of course the Coppa Italia. DB: thata€™s right, so which one is going to come out on top and have the treble and Ola€™ Big Ears. What do you think the scorea€™s going to be Damian? DF: Well, I think ita€™s going to be tight. I know a lot of people are tipping Barcelona but I think ita€™s going to be 1-1 after 90 minutes, and after that Damon, Ia€™m not really sure. DB: OK, yeah, I agree with you too; I think it is going to be tight. Although Ia€™ve put a prediction in for 2-1 to Barcelona because I just think that their front three are fearsome, and I think theya€™ll find a way to unpick Juventus somehow. So, wea€™re going to watch the game now, and wea€™ll be back in a moment with some of our reactions and some of our guests who are going to be watching the game with us. Stinger: You are listening to languagecaster.com (in French) DF: Well Damon, the 2015 Champions League final is over and Barca have won their fifth European title. What do you think of that? DB: Well done to Barcelona, theya€™re up there now with greats, such as Liverpool, arena€™t they! DF: Indeed they are. DB: Did you enjoy the game? What did you think? DF: I thought it was a really, really good game: high, high quality. End to end stuff, especially in the second half. Really, really enjoyed it. How about you? DB: Yep. It was great. I wonder what everyone else thought. What was the moment of the game for you, Tracey? TR: My second gin and Barcaa€™s possession. DB: Tim? TM: I think it was Iniestaa€™s through ball to Suarez. Didna€™t end up in a goal but it showed off Barcelonaa€™s attacking quality. DB: How about you Makoto? MK: Their first goal was amazing. Passing, passing, passing: Thata€™s Barcelona. DB: Yuli? YL: The atmosphere. DB: I just thought Juventusa€™ equaliser was great because thata€™s what set up the whole final I thought. Damian, how about you? DF: Yeah, I agree with that. It really did set it up, but of course Messia€™s shot and then Suareza€™s goal for the, well, really the winner of the Champions League I though was for me the moment of the game. (End of archive recording) DB: So, the 2015 Champions League final finished 3-1 to Barcelona, and many expected that win to usher in, or start, an era of dominance for the Catalan side. That, however, has failed to materialize with Barca losing in the quarter finals twice and semis once since then. Juventus have also been unable to get the win they crave. They got to the final in 2017 but lost to Real Madrid 4-1. The game itself, as we heard in the report, was an exciting one, and although it finished 3-1, the last Neymar goal came in extra time as Juventus were pushing for an equalizer, so the game was a real fight to the end. Learn English Through Football Podcast - 2018-19 Premier League Season Review: The domestic seasons in nearly all of the major European leagues are now over and on this week's podcast we take a look back at some of the good, the bad and the ugly from the 2018-19 Premier League season. We also describe some football language from the week, ask a football-language quiz question and look ahead to the Europa League final that takes place on Wednesday. Introduction - 2018-19 Premier League Season Review DF: You are listening to languagecaster.com's football-language podcast. Welcome to the Learn English Through Football podcast for all those who love the beautiful game of football and who wish to improve their English language skills. My name's Damian and I'm in a sunny London where it is a Bank Holiday weekend, which means that we have a long weekend as Monday is a national holiday. Now, regular listeners to the show will know that our co-presenter, Damon, is based in Tokyo, and he's down the line - how are things Damon? DB: Hi Damian. All good over here, except for the weather. Japan has suddenly shifted into summer temperatures, so we are sweating in 30 degree sun. DF: Wow! What football have you seen this week? DB: To be honest, absolutely nothing! How about you? DF: I saw two cup finals yesterday. First up I saw Celtic come from behind to defeat Hearts 2-1 to claim their third treble - a treble treble - which means they have won all three domestic titles, in Scotland,A for the past three years. Amazing. I then saw the German Cup final - the DFB Pokal - between Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig which Munich won 3-0 in a really entertaining game. DB: It looks like these doubles and trebles are becoming more common, or that's how it feels anyway. Although Barcelona were denied a domestic double after their defeat by Valencia in the Copa del Rey, weren't they? DF: Yes, that's right, I actually listened to the second half of that game in Spanish on the radio as there was no TV coverage here in the UK - it sounded an amazing game. By the way we have posted some additional content for our Patrons - a listening report with transcript that reviews some of those Cup finals across Europe, including those victories for Celtic, Valencia and Bayern Munich. The Language of Football: From the Archive – Champions League 2007

The Language of Football: From the Archive - Champions League 2007: In a series of posts over the following week, the languagecaster team will revisit posts from our archive. The 2019 Champions League Final is coming up and it features Damian's team, Tottenham Hotspur, and Damon's favourite team, Liverpool. To celebrate, they take a trip down memory lane. The transcript for this post is free, as a special taster, but if you'd like the transcript to our regular shows and our extra posts please show your support by becoming a patron (through Patreon). With the transcript you can improve your English by reading as you listen, or if you are a teacher of English you can use the transcript to make several activities for your learners. If you have questions or comments, email us at: [email protected] (Damon=DB). Introduction DB: This was the first Champions League the Languagecaster team covered, twelve years ago. The podcast started the previous year for the 2006 World Cup, so missed the 2006 final between Arsenal and Barcelona, which the Spanish team won 2-1, and the 2005 final in Istanbul, in which Liverpool made a stunning comeback to beat AC Milan on penalties. The post we re-publish today had the title 'In Ancient Greece...' This was in reference to the Liverpool fans terrace song, 'We won if five times, ' with its line, 'In Istanbul, we won it five times.' The four syllables of 'In Is-tan-bul' changed to the four syllables 'In An-cient Greece.' The 2007 final was a rematch of the 2005 version, with AC Milan, still packed with talent looking for revenge. Liverpool, on the other hand, were arguably a stronger side than that which won two year's earlier. The post was a preview written by me on the day of the match just before kick off. It wasn't an audio post, so I am reading the text - I'm sure I would have sounded a lot younger back in 2007! From the Archive - Champions League 2007 .. can we win it six times? Yes, says captain, and so often the Reds inspiration, Steven Gerrard. "We do not want to leave Athens upset and with regrets that we have not brought the European Cup home. We want to make history, be heroes and come home as winners." So here it is. Crunch time. After beating three champions on the way to the final, Barcelona, PSV and Chelsea - by the way two of those were the tournament favourites - Liverpool face one of only two sides to have a better European record in terms of European cups than themselves, AC Milan. It would seem that Liverpool are the underdogs in this clash, with most pundits backing AC Milan to win a tight game relying on their 'superior' midfield. But hang on a minute, does a 3-0 thrashing of Man United prove that AC Milan are going to lord it over the Merseysiders? What about AC Milan against Celtic? One goal in 3 hours of football! Steven Gerrard and the team have every right to hold their heads high when they walk out on the pitch tonight in Athens in the full knowledge they deserve to be there and they can win it! And if they don't? "You'll never walk alone..." Stinger: You are listening to languagecaster.com (in Italian). Well, Liverpool had to make do with the pride of appearing in the final, as they lost 2-1 to AC Milan. Inzaghi scored two, the first a deflection off his back, while Liverpool only had an 89th minute consolation goal from Dirk Kuyt. Many pundits thought the team from Merseyside were a bit unlucky; here is a quote from the Telegraph which was typical: 'Liverpool enjoyed most of the possession and created more chances without managing to find the net, as Milan avenged their Istanbul heartbreak.' Of course, I was gutted, but two finals in three years wasn't bad for a Liverpool fan. Thanks for listening watch out for more 'From the archive - Champions League' posts to come! Ta-ra! This week, I managed to watch Liverpool against Porto, Manchester United versus Barcelona and Spurs versus Manchester City - well done to Damian on his team's win. I bet he wished he was at the game in Tottenham's new stadium, but I imagine tickets were hard to get. On TV, it certainly looks a great football stadium with a great atmosphere. OK, let's take a look at what's on the show this week, and... My name's Damian and I am in London where the weather is miserable as we have lots of wind and rain here. I'm guessing it's a little warmer in Tokyo. Damon, how are things over there? DB: Hi Damian. Yes, you're right. It's fairly warm here - and we've enjoyed some nice sunny weather recently. A little cloudy today though. Apologies for not making the show last week, but I'm here today and looking forward to chatting about football! I saw Liverpool secure passage to the quarters in the Champions League earlier this week. Very nervous while I was watching, but on reflection, Liverpool always looked comfortable, and I also saw Juventus turn around their impressive 2-0 first leg defeat and defeat Atlético Madrid 3-2 on aggregate.
