Alfonso Cuarón In this episode of Latinx Lens Catherine and Rosa look at three films directed by Alfonso Cuarón. "Great Expectations" (1998) This second Hollywood directed film is an adaptation of Charles Dicken's classic story. Although it's his least critically acclaimed film, there seems to be some early signs of his unique filmmaking style. "Y Tu Mamá También (2001) Cuarón decides to return to his native country following the unfortunate experience he had filming Great Expectations. The film puts on full display Cuarón's abilities as a well-rounded filmmaker. Not only does he direct this film, but he also writes it. This film would be responsible for making Cuarón a household name. "Children of Men" (2006) Perhaps Cuarón's best film yet, this movie cements his Cuarón as one of the best directors currently working. Bending established genre's, this film challenges the definition of a disaster film by bending it with Sci-fi elements and breaking some elements from both genres. This isn't only Cuarón's best film yet, but one of the best films of all time. The Latinx Lens recommends for this episode is "Like Water for Chocolate" (1992). Directed by Alfonso Arau (this is the episode of the Alfonso's), this film would become the go to film representing Mexico to the world. Sorry to Bother You (2018) Set in an alternate present day version of Oakland, where telemarketer Cassius Green discovers a magical key to professional success, propelling him into a universe of greed. Thompson portrays Detroit, Cassius' romantic interest. Annihilation (2018) A biologist signs up for a dangerous, secret expedition into a mysterious zone where the laws of nature don't apply. Lena, a biologist and former soldier, joins a mission to uncover what happened to her husband inside area X, a sinister and mysterious phenomenon that is expanding across the American coastline. Once inside, the expedition discovers a world of mutated landscapes and creatures, as dangerous as it is beautiful, that threatens both their lives and sanity. Tessa plays Josie, a physicist, and although her role isn't grand her performance certainly is memorable. Sylvie's Love (2020) When a young woman meets an aspiring saxophonist in her father's record shop in 1950s Harlem, their love ignites a sweeping romance that transcends changing times, geography, and professional success. Thompson stars alongside Nnamdi Asomugha as the delightful Sylvie. For Latinx Lens Recommends we look at La Historia Oficial "The Official Story" (1985). An upper-class Argentinian woman begins to suspect that the daughter she and her husband have adopted may be one of the children of the purged political of the ruling junta. Bacurau - This Brazilian film sadly isn't its country selection to compete for a spot at the Academy Awards, but it doesn't make any less of an impactful film. Following a group of residents at the hidden city of Bacurau and their response to a series of unusual events that have been unfolding as of late. -- Available on VOD The Sleepwalkers - Argentina's selection is a raw and difficult look into a family who are sleepwalkers. At the front of the film is a mother & wife who is on the verge of dedicating her time to becoming a writer. A fracture familial foundation decides otherwise and she's placed in a position of picking between her in-laws or her daughter. -- Once Upon a Time in Venezuela is Venezuela's selection to compete in the category. A documentary filmed in a period of 7 years shining a light on a community that's in danger of existence due to sedimentation. Politics, cultural festivities, daily routines, socioeconomic status and more are explored as time runs out for this community. -- Available on VOD I'm No Longer Here Is Mexico's selection and it's endorsed by Alfonso Cuaron and Guillermo del Toro. If that doesn't spark an interest, I don't know what will. Following a young man who's forced to immigrate to New York after a misunderstanding with a local gang, this film explores community, culture, alienation, familial relationships, identity, culture shock and more. -- Available on Netflix The Mole Agent is Chile's representative and it follows an 80 year old man who's hired to investigate a possible elders abuse situation in a home. A film that starts as an investigative narrative evolves into a harsh reminder to value our elders and to give them the attention and care they need. A sweet, moving, heartwarming and eye opening documentary. -- Available on Hulu La Llorona is Guatemala's entry and this is a new (and improved) interpretation of the well known myth. In this episode of Latinx Lens Catherine and Rosa look into the filmography of Guillermo del Toro. One of the most acclaimed directors currently working in Hollywood, del Toro is responsible for the existence of many beloved films. In this episode they take a look at his first three directed feature films. CRONOS (1993) Guillermo del Toro's directorial debut is a strong introduction into the imagination of this Oscar winning director. Follows a man who becomes obsessed with an ancient scarab that gives him youth. It's an intriguing look of familial relationships, religious symbolism, and a bold interpretation of a monster. THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE (2001) This second film visits a historical time in Spain. Taking place in an orphanage, this film depicts the spoils of war. A group of children who become orphans as a result of the war become frightened with the presence of a ghost roaming the area. Again, an intriguing depiction of monsters. PAN'S LABYRINTH (2006) Perhaps his most well known film that's also critically acclaimed. Follows Ofelia post Spanish Civil war and her discovery of a fantastical magical labyrinth. In this episode Rosa & Cat take an in-depth look at the career of Raúl Juliá. The man who's known as Gomez Addams had a long challenging journey before that role. Analyzing three films with his documentary functioning as reference, this episode takes a look at Juliá's unfortunate short-lived career. KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN (1985) A gay man and a political leader are together in a prison. The gay man narrates the stories of two fake movies of his own life. Juliá portrays Valentin alongside William Hurt's Luis Molina. This film is the first to earn an actor an academy award (Hurt) for depicting an openly gay man in film. This may be the film that catapulted Raúl Juliá into the spotlight. Kiss of the Spider Woman is available in its entirety on YouTube. THE ADDAMS FAMILY (1991) In the film that would immortalize Juliá as Gomez Addams, this beloved film follows the Addams family in their search for their long lost uncle Fester (Lloyd). This family comedy showcases the uniqueness and importance of family. The Addams Family is available for rental on any rental platform. THE BURNING SEASON (1994) is based on the true story of Brazilian rubber tapper, Chico Mendes who leads his people in protest against the government and developers who want to cut down their part of the rainforest for a new road and ranch land. The rich and the powerful will stop at nothing, and frequently resort to murder. This would be the last film that Raúl Juliá would star in. Filming while fighting the disease that would eventually take his life, he was honored posthumously with a Golden Globe and Emmy award for his portrayal as Mendes. RAÚL JULIÁ: THE WORLD'S A STAGE (2019) is the documentary highlighting the Juliá's extraordinary career from his beginnings in his beloved Puerto Rico to his last films in Hollywood. Narrated by family members, former coworkers, and current noticeable Latinx actors, who were influenced by Juliá's work, this film is bound to open many viewers to the versatility and well rounded talent Raúl Juliá was. In this episode, Rosa and Cat highlight the groundbreaking Mexican director, Patricia Riggen. In January 2019, the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative released a report analyzing the gender, race and age of directors across 1,200 top films from 2007 to 2018. Out of 1,200 films, only one film was directed by a Latina director, Patricia Riggen. We examine three of her films: UNDER THE SAME MOON (LA MISMA LUNA) (2007) Single mother Rosario (Kate del Castillo) leaves her young son Carlitos (Adrian Alonso) in the care of his grandmother and illegally crosses the border into the U.S. She hopes to eventually make a better life for herself and her son but toils in a dead-end job as a cleaning lady in Los Angeles. When Carlitos' grandmother passes away some years later, he begins a difficult and dangerous journey to join her. GIRL IN PROGRESS (2012) Grace (Eva Mendes) is a single mom who is often too busy juggling her job, bills and two love interests (Matthew Modine, Eugenio Derbez) to pay much attention to her daughter, Ansiedad (Cierra Ramirez). Inspired by the coming-of-age stories her English teacher (Patricia Arquette) introduces in class, Ansiedad decides to skip adolescence and jump-start her life without her mother. But, when the misguided plan unravels, Ansiedad and Grace must both learn that growing up means acting your age. THE 33 (2015) Disaster strikes on Aug. 5, 2010, as a copper and gold mine collapses in Chile, trapping 33 men underground. With more than 2,000 feet of rock in their way, members of a rescue team work tirelessly for 69 days to save the seemingly doomed crew. Beneath the rubble, the miners begin an epic quest to survive, contending with suffocating heat and the need for food and water.
