Let me give you an example, fear aka "the lack of courage" makes you unattractive. But fear also overwhelms your mind and blocks your ability to perform. If you follow the correct steps to increase your courage; and you do it for the right reasons, you will become more attractive and you will maximize your performance. You must perform character workouts to comprehensively improve your courage. This is just one character evaluation point though, there are many more. If you are thinking, man this guy is making some lofty claims, you have already failed your first character workout. Happy Thursday Friends! We are 2 days away for Christmas. I am looking forward to spending time with family and making more memories. I am excited to introduce you to my next guest. He is a very talented artist, he has paved his own way as a musician and not getting tied up in any specific label as an artist. Please welcome Michael Emenau. From his first professional gig at the age 16 drumming in a country band to performing at with a symphony orchestra at Carnegie Hall four years later, the career of Michael Emenau has been as prolific as it has been varied. After completing a degree in classical percussion from McGIll University Michael played for multiple orchestras. Feeling confined he switched his focus over to jazz vibraphone, both of these experiences provided the skills to perform a wide range of musical genres, to date he has recorded vibraphone on over 200 albums. In the early 90’s he moved to Tokyo and immersed himself into the acid jazz and EDM scene becoming a member of the weekly UFO’s (United Future organisation) live/DJ all night music battles at Club Yellow. He went on to record on 5 of UFO’s albums including the platinum selling “Red Hot and Blue”. In the late 90’s Michael relocated to San Francisco where his musical interests cracked wide open—producing 3 albums with the Middle Eastern electronic group LUMIN; was a founding member of The Jazz Mafia which incorporated live looping and sampling into small and large jazz ensembles; fronting an Afro-Cuban dance band while also releasing solo jazzy downtempo music with Six Degrees Records and Hearts of Space. In 2005 Michael and his family relocated to Paris where he started a multi-year project unearthing, re-arranging, recording and performing the music of Henry Purcell with Cirque du Soleil star vocalist Elise Velle. This project spilled over to writing a musical, Divine Intervention--an interpretation of the demi-god Dionysus and his actual cultural influence on Classical composers and authors culminating in a 2-week run at the Nova Scotia Fringe Festival. Michael, his family and his beagle currently reside in Montreal where he is a world-touring member of the Grammy nominated “Les Triplettes de Bellville” Cine-Concerts series. He co-leads the Canadian Folk Music Awards nominated “ensemble of the year 2020” SUSSEX, which interweaves folk, ragtime, and roots music. Since the onset of Covid Michael has gone back to the studio and released 3 albums of Lofi Hip-Hop instrumental. The first of which is based on the music of Eric Satie and streamed over a half million times on Spotify. This quick success led to Michael signing with Six Degrees Distribution/Universal Records whose team helped to spark his renewed passion for classical music. What is good Friends! It is Thirsty Thursday and we're releasing another episode. As you know I love my artists! I love their courage around embracing their talent and sharing it with the world. My next guest has been on a lifelong journey developing and creating his art. Please welcome Tom Tikka! Tom Tikka picked up the guitar at the tender age of six after hearing Paul Anka’s “Lonely Boy” in his father’s old Chevrolet. Soon afterwards, he began writing songs. Tom’s infatuation with music only deepened after his aunt’s husband Timo "Oippa" Oinonen introduced him to the concept of lead guitar and even more importantly to the music of such legendary groups as The Beatles and The Doors. Tikka formed almost as many groups as he disbanded in his late teens and early twenties. Yet, when he finally signed his first recording contract on his 21st birthday, it was a solo deal and not a band effort. He recorded a three-song EP for Olarin Musiikki, a small indie label in Espoo (Finland), under the alias of Tom Spark. Unfortunately, the EP disappeared as quickly as it was released. Consequently, Tikka found himself in square one, without a band or a record deal. Disappointed, Tom withdrew from music for a few years but began writing songs again once his brother Lappe Holopainen suggested that they form a songwriting team. Lappe had founded a group he was convinced would go far and he needed tunes for his new outfit. This group was Carmen Gray. Carmen Gray was signed to Sony/BMG in 2005 and during the next nine years, they went on to record three albums and one EP. The group's entire catalog (including such radio hits as “Lost In My Mind Again”, “Gates Of Loneliness” & “Life Can Be Beautiful”) was penned by Tom Tikka & Lappe Holopainen. After Carmen Gray disbanded in 2013, Tikka formed his current group The Impersonators with poet Antti Autio. In 2017, The Impersonators signed with FBP, a German label based out of Frankfurt. Together with their producer Janne Saksa, the Josie Award-nominated The Impersonators have released tunes to rave reviews, considerable amount of radio attention and chart success: “Rodeo” rose to #1 on the International iTunes charts and “Scarlett Hell” to #9. In April 2020, Tom began working with MTS Records and has since released three critically-acclaimed solo EPs, one album and several iTunes hits, including the two #1 singles: "Doormat" & "With Eyes Closed". In 2021, Tom Tikka won an ISSA award for International Male Emerging Artist Of The Year. He was also awarded four Josie-Award nominations as well as a nomination in the prestigious Hollywood Music In Media Awards. They now work in partnership with St. Vincent de Paul Society of San Francisco, the SF AIDS Foundation, the San Francisco Zen Center, Raising Sparks Ministry, and other organizations in the Bay Area. As part of his BTH fundraising efforts, Ken executive produced and was a contributing artist on a double vinyl album titled, “Blanket The Homeless”. This compilation featured the top recording artists in the Bay Area, including two-time Grammy Award winning, Fantastic Negrito. Producer, Scott Mickelson, in addition to contributing a track himself, commissioned the remaining 13 artists and produced their tracks. All proceeds from album sales and ticket sales from the release concert in November of 2019 were in support of Ken’s organization. A little bit about Terry: ​I have reinvented myself frequently over my professional career. After I graduated from college at The Citadel (where I played NCAA Division I basketball), I was employed in the Marketing Department at the corporate headquarters of Wendy’s International in Dublin, Ohio. From there, I worked in hospital administration for Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. After getting married and moving to California for my wife's job, I became the Customer Service Manager for an academic publishing company in Santa Barbara. After our daughter was born and we moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, I became a police officer with the Cincinnati Police Department, where I was a SWAT Hostage Negotiator. Following a family relocation to Texas, I started a school security consulting business and coached high school girls basketball in Houston. Each time I took on a new job, I had to develop new skills and faced different challenges. There was always a significant learning curve with every new position. But my greatest challenge began in early 2012 when I was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called Acral Lentiginous Melanoma, which presented on the bottom of my foot. By the time the melanoma was detected, it had metastasized to a lymph node in my groin. Because my cancer is so rare (only about 6,500 people are diagnosed with this form of malignancy in the U.S. each year), I was treated at the world-renowned MD Anderson Cancer Center. I had two surgeries to remove the tumors, and after I healed, I was put on a weekly injection of the drug, Interferon, to help keep the disease from coming back. I took those weekly injections for four years and seven months before the Interferon became so toxic to my body that I ended up in the Intensive Care Unit with a fever of 108 degrees. Fortunately, expert medical care saved my life. The Interferon gave me severe flu-like symptoms for two to three days after each injection. I lost fifty pounds during my therapy, was constantly nauseous, fatigued, and chilled, my ability to taste food significantly diminished, and my body constantly ached. This misery went on for over 1,660 days! One thing I learned during all my pain and suffering is that you have two choices. You can succumb to the debilitating discomfort and misery, or you can learn to embrace it and use it to make you a stronger and better human being. I chose the latter. There were times I felt so poorly and was in so much agony that I prayed to die. Each day was a struggle to use my mind to override my body's apathy and distress. I realize pain and discomfort can beat you to your knees and keep you there if you let it. But I also came to appreciate that I could use my hurting and anguish to make me stronger and more resolute. I was no better at dealing with pain and discomfort than the next person. But every day, I found a way to survive, with the knowledge that I would need to do it again the following morning. I recently wrote a book, entitled Sustainable Excellence, Ten Principles to Leading Your Uncommon and Extraordinary Life, to help people find and live their uncommon and extraordinary life. The ten principles outlined in the book will provide the bedrock necessary to form the foundation of unshakable beliefs and dedicated behaviors to reinforce your attitude, no matter how much pain you must endure or how many obstacles you must overcome. My hope is that people who read the book will lead a life of significance, as well as a life of success. I understand what it is like to fight for your life and one thing I’ve learned is that as long as you don’t quit, you can never be defeated. Sadly, catastrophe struck when their house burned down, Angela was six years old. For a short time, the children were sent to live with foster families while the parents searched for housing. The family moved a lot over the next few years and her parents ultimately divorced. Her family home was destroyed by fire when she was six years old. Angela grew up to marry an emotionally abusive man; she stayed for 32 years because she didn’t want to hurt him; she didn’t have the internal strength to leave. The 2017 Tubbs Wildfire in Northern California was a catalyst for her personal growth, starting on the night her house was reduced to ash. When everything in her life was gone, she was forced to examine her relationship. She realized it was toxic; it was not going to get better; she made the decision to leave.
