S7 Ep 275#275: Joy in Our Writing

"I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit." - Romans 15:13 (NLT) Kingdom Writers have access to a joy that can't be manufactured through human means. It's something that we're given by the Holy Spirit We can follow Paul's example by praying that we are filled with this joy. Read John 16:20-24 We should expect some pain and struggle in the process of writing our book Pain and anguish eventually give way to joy as our books are birthed into the world. Jesus tells us to ask in his name - what are the requests of our hearts regarding our writing? As we ask and see the prayers of our hearts answered, abundant joy follows. We should approach our writing with relaxed, open hands, not clenched fists. When we're open to the Spirit's leading, a beautiful melody of words can follow. S7 Ep 274#274: Practicing the Presence of God in our Writing - What we can learn from Brother Lawrence

"Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away. Each time he said, "My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness." So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses so that the power of Christ can work through me. That's why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong." 2 Corinthians‬ ‭12:8-10‬ ‭NLT‬‬ God is creating weakness in our lives in order to drive us to Him. Our weaknesses are meant to create dependence upon Him alone. He'll spend decades cultivating weakness in our lives. There is only one hero in this story we find ourselves and that hero is Jesus Christ Brother Lawrence gives us a picture of almost pathetic weakness and dependence during his time as a cook and dishwasher for a monastery in the 1600s. "He was a great awkward fellow, who broke everything." "When he had failed in his duty, he simply confessed his fault, saying to God, I shall never do otherwise if Thou leavest me to myself; 'tis Thou must hinder my fallings, and mend what is amiss.' Brother Lawrence was lame which made simple tasks much more difficult, including traveling to Burgundy to buy the provision of wine for the monastery. On many occasions, he could hardly remember how the task was accomplished except God helped him moment by moment. "He accustomed himself to do everything for the love of God, and with prayer, upon all occasions, for His grace to do his work well." "We ought not to be weary of doing little things for the love of God, for He regards not the greatness of the work, but the love with which it is performed." "The higher perfection a soul aspires after, the more dependent it is upon Divine Grace." Before setting about his work in the kitchen, he prayed, "O MY GOD, since Thou art with me, and I must now, in obedience to Thy commands, apply my mind to these outward things, I beseech Thee to grant me the grace to continue in Thy Presence; and to this end, do Thou prosper me with Thy assistance, receive all my works, and possess all my affections." Closing Story: Whitewater rafting trip in West Virginia with Youth For Christ. Almost lost our foreign exchange student from Hungary when a girl grabbed onto him for dear life after their raft tipped over. She was just a little thing but her fear of drowning drove her to cling to anything or anybody within reach. Her utter helplessness and weakness caused her to grab ahold of the exchange student. "I'm going to die unless someone else acts on my behalf." As Kingdom Writers, we MUST cling to Jesus with all of our beings, knowing how utterly weak we are. He will uphold us one word at a time, one sentence at a time, one paragraph, one chapter, one finished book at a time. HE'S the hero of the story, not you & I. S7 Ep 272#272: The Power of a Book Series

We talked about publishing short Kindle books last month. If you publish short books, I recommend creating a Kindle series around your main topic. Your series title can be related to your main topic. Then, each small book can focus on a specific problem within that topic. Publishing a book series helps you build authority in that niche; people will eventually know that you know your stuff. One of the first series that I created was my vegetarian cookbook series. There were seven books in the series and they sold really well. Each book in the series then promoted the others. Instead of having one cookbook with ALL the recipes, I broke it down by topic as follows: Breakfast Recipes Lunch Recipes Main Entrees Appetizer Recipes Salad Recipes Soup, Stew, and Chili Recipes The Ultimate Guide to Vegetarian Cooking with ALL the recipes By now, you should be getting the idea. What seems to work best is when you have six or seven books in the series. That seems to be the sweet spot, where Amazon starts promoting the other books for you and doing some advertising for you. They do this by displaying your book on "Customers who bought this also bought" or sending out promotional emails about your books. You may think that six to seven books sound like too much work! However, if you think about writing 10,000 words per book or 60,000-70,000 words for the entire series, this is less content than some full-length novels. Therefore, when writing a Kindle series, think about it as if you are writing one big book in small chunks of six or seven smaller eBooks. It is powerful. I want you to really consider writing a series and finishing one book per month. If you do this, your entire series will be finished in less than seven months. And the benefits of publishing your series can last a lifetime. Here are just a few of the benefits possible to you as a Kindle author: Credibility Authority in your niche Exposure for your business Reach more people with your message (even internationally) Get leads for your business, 24/7, on autopilot Find new clients for your services Diversify your income And more! S7 Ep 271#271: Do You Need a Writing Warmup?

Since taking up running over 13 years ago, I've (CJ) learned the importance of a proper warm-up. Whether I'm preparing for a key speed workout or long run, my rule of thumb is to keep the first two miles nice and easy. Rather than forcing my legs to move faster in the beginning, I simply put one foot in front of the other and allow my legs to gradually warm up and get acquainted with movement. I've had many days where I wanted to bail in the first couple miles of a run due to "not feeling it." But if I stick with it, the legs and body usually turn a corner and I'm rewarded with a delightful run. Some might call it tapping into the "runner's high." As a Christian writer, I've also learned the value of a good warm-up. It can sometimes take 30 minutes to allow our spirits to calm and the outside noise to quiet down. Just as an athlete needs a proper warm-up, Christian writers can also benefit by easing into a writing flow. Rather than coming out of the gate charging hard, why not play some peaceful music while prayerfully inviting God to lead us in our thoughts. We might even imagine Jesus commanding 'Peace be still' as he calms the storms within us. Our spiritual enemy tries to tempt us to bail on our writing in the first few minutes. We may be tempted to say, "I'm just not feeling it today." But just like in running, things could turn a corner if we'll just stick with it and push through the negative feelings. Give yourself some grace in the beginning of a writing session by including a writing warm-up. S7 Ep 270#270: How desperate are you for a breakthrough in your writing?

As writers, there are things that can stand in the way of seeing the breakthrough of finishing our book. Sometimes there's an absolute desperation on our part. There are times we can get a little crazy after exhausting all other options. But when we encounter Jesus, breakthroughs are possible… Mark 2:1-12 Imagine the testimony of this paralyzed man. He was lowered through a hole in the roof by his friends but walked out the front door under his own power after encountering Jesus. Sometimes we have to get a little crazy as we find our way around the "crowds" of things that keep us from Jesus. Desperation sometimes comes after we've exhausted other options that haven't worked (example: woman with the blood issue touching the hem of Jesus's garment - Mark 5). This paralyzed man had 4 good friends who helped him. Can you think of 4 people willing to carry you and your book to Jesus in prayer? "Stunned onlookers" were praising God in verse 12. Our books can have a similar effect as a testimony to God's work in our lives Have you felt paralyzed in your writing? Jesus brings life and movement to things that have long been paralyzed. Here are some recommendations if you get desperate. Decide if you will: Turn off your phone or all the notifications so you won't get distracted. Take a social media fast for a month so you could finish writing your book. Reserve a hotel room or go somewhere so you have undistracted time to work on your book. Have a week's vacation and focus on writing your book. Form a small prayer team that will pray for you while you write. So what might it look like for you? S7 Ep 269#269: Consider Selling Your Book in Bulk

When you write a new book, one thing I want you to consider is how to set your book up for bulk orders. What are bulk orders? Typically these will come from groups, organizations, or companies that will want to order multiple copies of their books for book studies, gifts, to include in a subscription box, etc. Include a Reader's Guide I recommend creating a reader's guide with discussion questions that book clubs can use. Typically you will add the questions to the back of your book. This applies to both fiction and nonfiction. If you've written a Bible study or book study that can be used with church groups, this is another avenue where your books can be purchased in higher quantities. Personally, I have found that I sell a lot more copies of my print book, Broken Crayons Still Color, because women's groups use it for their studies. Whether you are writing a fiction novel or a nonfiction book, consider how you can make it easy for groups to use it. You will have the potential to make more book sales and impact more people this way. You can let your readers know that you have additional resources for book clubs on your website. This could look like a standalone page on your website or you can have them sign up to an email list to get the information. Other Options Think outside the box! Are there companies who could use your book for leadership training for their employees or as a gift for Christmas? Or maybe a company wants to give the books as a gift for their buyers. For example, real estate agents often buy gifts for their new homeowners. Subscription box companies are also an option. For example, ourselves as well as several of our members have been able to work with God's Glory Box. Offer Discounts Be willing to offer discounts to companies who buy your print books in bulk. S7 Ep 268#268: Publish with a Purpose: Start with a Short Kindle eBook

There are so many reasons to write short Kindle eBooks. Personally, I have been writing this type of book for many years and people enjoy reading shorter books. We are all busy and we all have a lot to do. Therefore, if I can find one book to read quickly, get my question answered, and move on, I'm a happy camper. A short book is easy for your readers to consume. A lot of readers will read books over their lunch break or when they have a few minutes. Some short books can be finished within a one hour lunch break The best part about writing a short book? It's quicker to write! It's a quick win and can help us build momentum for the next book The Book Length A question I am often asked is how long should the book be? For short Kindle eBooks, I recommend a length of about 10,000 words. It equals out to about 60-70 print pages. This is the length of most of our short eBooks. However, your book can be anywhere from 6,000-20,000 words. Download Your Publishing Map If you want to write and publish a book but don't know where to start, this Publishing Map is for you. S7 Ep 267#267: 5 Ways to Quiet Your Inner Critic and Stay in the Writing Zone

When you are in your writing zone, you are using the right side of your brain. This is the creative part of your brain. Whereas when you are outlining, researching, and editing you are using the left side of your brain. This is the logical part of your brain and also where your inner critic resides. Therefore when you try to write and edit at the same time, your inner critic can easily shut you down. For example, your inner critic might say, "You're not spelling that right. Who are you to write a book when you don't even know how to spell? This is horrible. You might as well stop now and not even try to write this book." And on and on it goes. We've all been there. So, let's not let our inner critic get the best of us. Amen? 5 ways to quiet your inner critic and stay in the writing zone: Highlight an area that will need more editing or research later. You can do this by using a different color or highlighting the text. If you're writing with paper and pen (or pencil) you can draw an asterisks or arrow next to it. Turn off spell check. Spell check can be a constant distraction because it shows you where your potential spelling and grammar mistakes are as you write. It is important to self-edit your work, but I don't recommend doing it when you're in the writing zone. So if this distracts you, turn it off while you're writing. Here's how in Microsoft Word: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/turn-spell-check-on-or-off-e2805461-77d4-4832-b006-061163c8d01a Here's how in Google Docs: https://support.google.com/docs/answer/57859?co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop&hl=en Use a text editor or distraction free writing tool that doesn't highlight potential edits like your typical word processor. Turn off your computer screen. Yes, some writers say they actually do this when typing to avoid the distractions. I'm not sure I could write this way, but I wanted to at least mention it. Talk to your inner editor. Let the editor part of your brain know that you will get back to the editing later. Right now you are writing and need to focus on one task at a time. "When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, "Silence! Be still!" Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm." Mark‬ ‭4:39‬ ‭NLT We need to tell our inner critic "Silence! Be still!" - the Greek word here implies putting a muzzle on a dog. Put a muzzle on your inner critic Free WRITING WHEEL Download Learn 5 Proven Writing Strategies You Can Use Today to Get More Writing Done Get instant access to a 17-page PDF Learn 5 strategies to help you finish the writing God has called you to do. This episode is part of the Finisher series. We originally recorded these teachings inside our Christian Book Academy Facebook group as live videos and for today, inside our Writing Week Challenge group. Today's topic is: Stand Strong as a Courageous Writer This is not the end, it's just the beginning for you and your writing! Join us in Christian Book Academy today and you'll get a free ticket to our Virtual Writing Retreat this Friday and Saturday, a $199 value included in your membership. Yay! Join us here: http://christianbookacademy.com Today we want to encourage you to be a courageous writer….even when you don't feel like it. Fear is what we feel, brave is what we do. Amen? Are you sharing your work with others? Put yourself out there. Step into the light from the shadows. It's time to release your words to the world. Let them fly. We can get stuck in paralyzing fear. I still get nervous when releasing a new book to the world - filled with doubt and second-guessing It takes courage to share what you create with the world. When you put your heart and soul into something putting out there to possibly be criticized is tough. I found that once I started thinking of myself as a writer, my courage grew, and the way others responded to me changed. It's amazing how a subtle shift in attitude can make all the difference. It is by taking those next steps and moving forward that great things happen. The world needs your words. It's time to press publish!! One minute reflection: What is God saying to you today? It is our mission to be used by God to help unlock the gift of writing inside you. God has more for you. More for your writing. Inside Christian Book Academy, we work with Christian writers of all genres, like you, to help you conquer your fears in a real community, write words that will outlive you, and publish books that fulfill your calling. S4 Ep 237#237: Finding Calm in the Chaos: How to Thrive During Crisis with M&M's (Finisher Series)

This episode is part of the Finisher series. We originally recorded these teachings inside our Christian Book Academy Facebook group as live videos. However, we wanted to also encourage you in the writing, publishing, and marketing of your books. Today's topic is: Finding Calm in the Chaos: How to Thrive During Crisis with M&M's Scriptures: - "This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; He is my God, and I trust Him." Psalms‬ ‭91:2‬ ‭NLT‬‬ - "The Lord says, 'I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name. When they call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honor them.'" Psalms‬ ‭91:14-15‬ ‭NLT‬‬ Are you a person that feels deeply? If so, it's easy to let our emotions control how we feel. I know because this has been me. For much of my life, my emotions have been in control. But, God is helping me change this slowly over time. Today we felt led to share a few of the things that we have seen make the biggest difference for us. God is our refuge and place of safety, Amen? We need to be proactive during this time. We need to care for our souls. A few things that have helped us: 1. Movement Get out for a walk or turn on some music and get up and dance! When watching our online church service this past weekend, I got up and danced around our dining room during worship. If you would have seen me, you might have thought I went crazy. LOL! But, it helped shift my mood! I feel a difference when I get out and run. For you, it may be a walk. Just get up and move. It makes a difference. 2. Music Worship music can shift my mood faster than almost anything else. Turn on a playlist and let it change the atmosphere of your home. "...be filled with the Holy Spirit, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts." - Ephesians‬ ‭5:18-19‬ ‭NLT‬‬ If you want a playlist to listen to, here's my worship playlist: https://open.spotify.com/…/2uUmxltudwdO… 3. Managing Your Media In mid-January, I felt God lead me to take an indefinite break from social media (except my paid groups). I'm a redeemed social media addict so I understand how easy it is to scroll and scroll and scroll. No judgment here. I get it and have been there myself. I've had so much peace during this time because I haven't been exposed 24/7 to the media. I still check in occasionally, but I don't get caught up in it. Ask God right now what you need to do to manage the media you consume. News, social media, etc. I highly encourage you to limit your intake in some way. "We can demolish every deceptive fantasy that opposes God and break through every arrogant attitude that is raised up in defiance of the true knowledge of God. We capture, like prisoners of war, every thought and insist that it bow in obedience to the Anointed One." - 2 Corinthians‬ ‭10:5‬ ‭TPT‬‬ "Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life." - ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭4:23‬ ‭NLT‬‬ "Then the king returned to his palace and spent the night fasting. He refused his usual entertainment and couldn't sleep at all that night." - Daniel‬ ‭6:18‬ ‭NLT‬‬ Are we willing to fast from our "usual entertainment" for a day in order to seek the Lord? 4. Meditation In February I finally started a consistent habit of meditating for at least 20 minutes a day. And already I can see how it's changing my brain for the better. I don't recommend jumping in and trying to start with 20 minutes right away. Start with one minute. In fact, John Eldredge created a free app called the Pause app that leads you in a one-minute meditation. You can also gradually work up to 3, 5, 10 minutes, but start with one minute every day and see what happens. Get started here: https://www.pauseapp.com/ Yesterday I could tell something was off in me and so I spent more time in meditation throughout the day. "I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways." - Psalms‬ ‭119:15‬ ‭ESV‬‬ Meditate = "siyach" in Hebrew. Found over 20 times in the Old Testament. "To muse, study, ponder, consider, put forth thoughts ." Lectio Divina is a form of prayer that also involves meditating on Scripture. We will be walking you through the steps with scripture in next week's Celebration Party. 5.Mindfulness If you have trouble quieting your mind, another form of meditation is mindfulness. It's not a weird thing. It simply means being fully present at the moment instead of dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. I've been a worrier and this has helped me. Definition of mindfulness: a mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations. I've heard someone say it's like removing the residue in a bathtub. Currently, the Balance app is offering a one-year subscription for free. I have found it helpful so far. It's not a Christian app but stays neutral focusing on teaching yo
