Killer In The Family

In September 1971 in South Australia 40 year old Heather Bartholomew, her seven children – Neville, Christine, Sharon, Helen, Gregory Roger and Sandra - her sister Winnis and her 19 month old son Daniel were all killed by Clifford Bartholomew – Heather’s husband and father of six of the eight children he killed.  Known at the time as the deadliest familicide in Australian history – Bartholomew was arrested and sentenced for the murder of his wife. Although given a life sentence he ended up serving less than 8 years. Once out of prison Bartholomew changed his name, married again and was stepfather to children who were similar ages to his children that he killed. In February 2010, Susan McFall and her 18 year old daughter Francesca Frankie McFall were killed by husband and father Hugh McFall.  Apparently fearing the loss of his business and social and financial failure, McFall beat his wife and daughter to death before taking his own life. In February 2010, 24 year old Stephanie Bellinger and her 10 month old daughter Lili were killed by partner and father of Lili, Anthony Marsh. In November 2019, 28 year old Jennifer Rothwell was killed by husband Beau Rothwell – she was six weeks pregnant with his baby.  Having googled "What to do if your husband is upset you are pregnant” before she was killed Jennifer wasn’t sure if Rothwell wanted their baby.  Although he claimed he didn’t plan the murder, Rothwell was clearly an escapee family annihilator who planned to kill his wife and unborn child to continue a life with another woman. In January 2023 46 year old Athalia Crayton, her 18 year old son Kasin and her 16 year old daughter and 10 year old son were all shot and killed by husband and father Robert Crayton. He then took his own life.  Crayton was someone who struggled with mental health issues with police having attended the Crayton’s house five times in the years before the murders with one time resulting in an involuntary commitment of Crayton. In September 2024 29 year old Samantha Garnier was killed by her husband Drew Garnier in Masonville, New York. She was five months pregnant and he killed their unborn child too.  As well as killing his wife and unborn child Garnier also stabbed his two daughters who were 9 years old and 6 years old at the time. In January 2012 47 year old Susan McGoldrick, her sister 44 year old Alison Turnball, and her niece (Alison’s daughter) 24 year old Tanya Turnball were shot and killed by Michael Atherton, Susan’s partner.  An abusive and violent man who had been arrested for violent incidents towards Susan before, Atherton was able to legally own the guns which he used to kill the three women. In April 2007 Ciara Dunne and her two children 4 year old Lean and 3 year old Shania were killed by husband and father Adrian Dunne. He then took his own life. Having prepared their wills and visited Funeral Directors in the weeks before the murders, it has been said that Adrian and Ciara planned the murders together before Adrian carried them out. In June 2017 the bodies of Cheryl Baker, Nadja Medley and her daughter Payton Medley were discovered at a property in Caldwell, Idaho. They had all been shot and killed.  Cheryl’s husband, pilot Gerald Mike Bullinger, who was also Nadja’s boyfriend, was no where to be seen. In March 1974 39 year old Pamela Panes and her three children Graham aged 7, Angela aged 6 and Adrian aged 4 were killed by husband and father Roger Panes in Hampshire in the UK. Roger then took his own life.  The Panes family belonged to the Plymouth Brethren religion. Before the murders, Roger had been forcibly “shut up” — or shunned from the religious community he’d grown up in. His own wife and children were instructed to shun him as well. That isolation pushed Roger into a downward spiral: first an attempt on his own life, then the decision to murder his whole family.  A family were taken, and the community were left with questions about the role of religion in their murders. In June 1994 Im Pun (Sylvia) Zakrzewski and her two children Edward and Anna were brutally killed by husband and father Edward Zakrzewski. Sylvia was planning on leaving Zakrzewski. As soon as he found that out – he planned the murders.  Nearly 30 years after he killed his whole family, on 31 July this year, Zakrzewski was executed by the State of Florida by lethal injection. On 10 August 1996 22 year old Liana Duke and her 5 year old son Erik died in an apparent accidental fall off a cliff near Green River in Wyoming. Their deaths were ruled accidental and husband and father Robert Bob Duke walked away not only a widower but also the beneficiary of his wife’s life insurance. For two years, that’s where the story ended. Until Bob’s childhood friend, Roger Brauburger, finally cracked. Send us a textIn March 2004, in a quiet suburb of Melbourne, Australia, Anna Kemp and her 20-month-old daughter Gracie were brutally murdered by the very person who should have loved and protected them the most — husband and father, John Sharpe. Armed with a speargun, he shot Anna and Gracie multiple times, killing them in cold blood. Anna was also pregnant with their second child who she had named Francis. They included wife Becky, his children Gene Jr, Loretta, Eddy, Marianne, Becky, Billy, and Sheila, his grandchildren Barbara, Trae, Sylvia, and Michael, his daughter-in-law Renate, and his son-in-law Dennis. Not content with slaughtering his family, Simmons then murdered a former co-worker, Kathy Kendrick, and an innocent bystander, Jim Chaffin and wounded many other people in the process. It remains one of the deadliest familicides in American history. Simmons was executed by lethal injection in 1990. This is the story of the Simmons Family. Inside were the bodies of four family members — Denise Gossett, 45, her children Sabrina, 19, and Roman, 16, and Sabrina’s baby daughter, 15-month-old Morgana. The only survivor was Denise’s partner, 33-year-old Daniel Allen — the man responsible for their murders. Allen was a violent, coercive, and controlling man who forced the family to live under different names, isolated them from the outside world, and moved them from place to place to maintain his grip on them. His campaign of terror ended in a deliberate act of unspeakable violence. Although Janet’s murder is still technically unsolved her family always suspected that it was Raven who killed her and his unborn child. In 2014 he entered an Alford Plea acknowledging that there was enough evidence to convict him but didn’t technically admit guilt for the murders. The fire was set deliberately by Lorraine’s partner Arthur McElhill who also died in the fire. McElhill was a convicted sex offender who groomed and abused many teenage girls including his partner Lorraine. Send us a textIn July 2024, just last year, Carol Hunt was at her home in Bushey near Watford with two of her three daughters – Hannah aged 28 years old and Louise aged 25 years old. Kyle Clifford – Louise’ ex-boyfriend came to the house and murdered all three women. A violent man with a history of control, he was convicted of the murders in January this year and has just been convicted of raping Louise as well. Clifford will spend the rest of his life in prison for the horrific destruction of nearly a whole family. This is the update episode for Carol, Hannah and Louise Hunt. Over a week later her killed was captured, convicted and executed in Australia in May 1892. At the same time police in England found the dead bodies of Marie James and her four children Bertha, Mary, Sidney and Leala in a house in Rainhill near Liverpool. They had been killed the year before by husband and father Frederick Deeming. The same man who had killed Emily Mather. A family annihilator and bigamist, Deeming was a career criminal who made a life from duping and killing the women he deemed to love. He was also connected to another infamous serial killer who haunted the streets of London in Victorian England. In July 1991 18 year old Julie Dart was kidnapped from Leeds and forced to write ransom letters to her boyfriend and mother. Kept in a workshop by her kidnapper she tried to escape and was killed. Her body was found in Lincolnshire nine days later. In January 1992 25 year old Stephanie Slater was kidnapped while showing a house as an estate agent. She was taken to the same workshop while her kidnapper sent random notes to her employer. Once he had collected the ransom money Stephanie was let go and dropped off back to her family. She survived the kidnapping but sadly died of cancer in 2017 just aged 50 years old. Both women were kidnapped by serial predator Michael Sams who is still serving his life sentence today. This is Part Two of the story of Julie Dart and Stephanie Slater.
