Today we get to hear what the people did while Moses was receiving the 10 commandments, hear the spies check out the promised land, and learn how Joshua and Caleb clung to God's promises. We hear them walk by faith and not by sight. We will hear that the unbelieving generation doesn't get to enter the promised land and how it will be their children who will enjoy the land flowing with milk and honey which God promised to them. The kids will apply God's promises to their own lives and think about which promises are easy to see and which are harder to see. Exodus 19: 1-8, 16-20 Today we hear Moses called to the top of Mount Sinai where God gives him the 10 commandments. We learn what a commandment is. Next week, we'llgo through the 10 commandments and hear what they are but today, we will focus on why we even have them. God gave them and us these 10 rules which showed how life worked best. We begin to understand that rules are there to protect us b/c God loves us. The kids apply this to a rule in their life to help them better understand this. Exodus 17:8-13 Today we hear about the battle with the Amalekites. During this battle, Moses must keep his arms raised or else the Israelites begin to lose! When Moses grew tired, he had two helpers at his side: Aaron & Hur. We apply that God gives us people to help us too. God created us to be with others.... to have family and friends, a church, & a community. He gives us people who can help us when we grow tired, just like he did for Moses. Today, we hear the Israelites struggling in the desert as they journey to the promised land. The Israelites thought this hardship meant God wasn’t among them but that’s simply not true. Exodus 16: 31-35 We continue our Exodus series. God instructs Moses and Aaron to place some manna in a jar for the next generation. As time passes and the Israelites get older, God wants them to be able to see that manna sitting in the jar and remember that time in the desert,....remember what God did and his faithfulness. They’ll continue to tell their children, grandchildren, & great grand children the miraculous story of what happened to them in the desert. We apply this to our lives and recount if we have items in our life that serve as reminders of how good God is. We discuss ideas to use for this and help get the family involved. Exodus 16: 17-31 Today, we hear how some of the people did not listen to God's instructions about gathering manna. The Israelites, didn’t listen to God b/c they didn’t trust Him. They didn’t trust He would rain down bread again the next day ...they didn’t trust HE knew best. We apply this to our lives and examine why we don't listen all the time either. The story reminds us that we can trust God AND if he is trustworthy, that means we can listen to Him. Listening means more than just hearing w/ your ears.. it also means, obeying with your actions. Exodus 16:1-16 Wandering in the desert, the people become hungry. God had just miraculously provided for them but the Israelites have quickly forgotten. What an exciting story this is! God says the forecast is set for raining bread and meat!!!! The story reminds us yet again of God's faithfulness and how quickly we can forget it. Exodus 15:22-27 Today we find Moses leading the Israelites in the hot desert when things become hard. They begin to grumble b/c they have no water! God had just performed an incredible miracle, saving them from the Egyptians by parting the Red Sea for them BUT the days were hard and they quickly forget that God can provide just as He always has. This story warns us to be cautious b/c we too, quickly forget good things from God and can begin to grumble just like the Israelites did. When things are hard, we can remember this story and choose to remember, what He’s done for us in the past. Mark 10: 46-52 We find Bartimaeus crying out to Jesus for help. The crowd tells Bartimaeus to be quiet. Who is he that Jesus would want to hear from him?!?! Jesus hears all of us when we call out to Him. Whether popular or outcast, whether we are calling out amongst a noisy crowd or sitting quietly in our room, Jesus hears us and listens just like He did for Bartimaeus. COLOSSIANS 2:13-15 Recently, we celebrated Easter and since that time, parents have been sending in fantastic questions kids have had; many of them related to Easter. I am going to do my best to answer PART 2 of the more complex questions :Why Did Jesus Die? We use a story about two children who disobey the rules and play ball in the house. This ends with a window being broken and the understanding that someone must cover the cost of this mistake. The children realize they can not fix such an expensive mistake and must be forgiven and helped by their parents. Though the parents were not the ones that broke the window, out of love and their ability to have money, they are able to cover this cost. We use this example and connect the dots to the Bible that: 1. Our sin is very serious. 2. No human & no amount of money can fix our sins. Jesus is the only one who can save us. He never sinned. 3. Jesus cleaned up the mess we made and absorbed the cost himself when he died on the cross. 4. We all sin and can ask Jesus to forgive us. Resources for parents: The Reason for God by Tim Keller. This is an adult book and covers many difficult questions which you can study and then teach your child on their level. 5 Truths About the Death of Jesus This is an adult article from the Desiring God website. John 18, John 19 ,Luke 23, & Matthew 27 (EASTER PART 2) Parents, today we are going to be talking about the cross. I respect each families ages/ stages life so I have adapted some of this. Matthew 26 :36-56 Today begins our Easter series! I want to respect each listener's ages and levels of understanding, so I have adapted some of these for the needs of our audience. Please go back and read the scriptures yourselves to include what is appropriate for your family. I will also encourage you to listen to all of the episodes in this Easter series in order, as the stories build upon themselves. This story begins in the garden of Gethsemane and ends with Jesus being arrested. We remember that Jesus could have whispered 1 word and 100’s of angels would have appeared to rescue him BUT he didn’t do this. Why? Because He chose to. He chose to obey God b/c he loves God the father!!!! God’s plan had been there all along to rescue us b/c he loves us that much! Today, we hear Jesus going to the home of Jairus to heal his very sick girl. It seems like Jesus is too late but his timing is perfect even if it doesn't make sense to us. We are reminded that Jesus sees all and knows all. Jesus does heal the child and lovingly calls her "little girl." We are reminded that we have a loving, protective, and kind Father in Jesus. Mark 5:21-34 In our story, Jesus asks who touched me. This seems like a silly question b/c Jesus knows everything. He has numbered the hairs on our head, He knows what you had for breakfast, and He knows what you are going to do tomorrow. He knows everything about everyone! The kids think about what having a bad day feels like and we discuss how feelings are important but sometimes, they can trick us to forget the truth. Luke 4:1-13 This is part 1 in our short series where we find Jesus being tempted in the desert by the devil. We will learn that the devil is always a slick and slimy one trying to twist God's words. The devil tries to tempt Jesus into proving that He really is God's son. Of course Jesus is God's son! Jesus knows this truth and does not need to prove anything to the devil so He does not fall for it. We learn that we too can remember the truth of whose we are: we are loved children of God. Joshua 6:1-21 We hear God telling Joshua to knock down the strong wall of Jericho using......the sound of trumpets?! HUH? I wonder if Joshua thought this request a little odd. God asked Joshua to do something ..that may have seemed almost impossible. Maybe it wasn’t easy for him to obey b/c of this. We will hear if Joshua ends up trusting God and obeying even when it doesn’t make sense. We will apply this to how we should obey God and identify it there are others God has put in charge of us; people like mom, step-dad, or grandma who love us very much and protect us, who we should obey as well.
