Ep 301- Khandaan at 300: Love, Burnout and Streaming Chaos
Patreon Exclusive: We recorded a bonus video episode where we debate AI-generated “movies,” tech hype vs reality, and launch a new idea for a recurring Rewatchables series. Join us on Patreon to watch and weigh in. In this milestone 300th episode, Asim, Amrita, and Sujoy take stock of Khandaan’s journey — from lockdown comfort-listening to surviving pandemics, political chaos, and some truly questionable movie choices (yes, Kyun Ki was #300). We talk honestly about where Bollywood is right now: the lack of joy, the fatigue around current releases, and whether we still want to watch everything. Along the way, we respond to listener mail about Sanjay Leela Bhansali, debate art vs aesthetics, unpack Kohrra Season 2, react to O Romeo, and review The Bluff starring Priyanka Chopra — plus a wider conversation about her Hollywood trajectory and the “action star” box. It’s reflective, a little ranty, occasionally bleak, but ultimately grateful — because 300 episodes later, we’re still here, still arguing, and still obsessed with desi cinema. Ep 300- Kyun Ki: Salman, Lobotomies & Bollywood Madness
In this episode, Asim, Amrita, and Sujoy revisit Kyun Ki — Priyadarshan’s 2005 “romantic tragedy” starring Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Jackie Shroff and Om Puri — and try to figure out what on earth happened. Is this a misunderstood melodrama? A chaotic remake experiment? Or peak mid-2000s Bollywood madness? From mental asylum tropes and questionable Rorschach tests to lobotomies, disco flashbacks, and one very tragic swimming pool, we unpack the film’s wild tonal swings and that infamous ending. Expect the usual Khandaan mix of nostalgia, sharp side-eyes, soundtrack detours (hello Kunal Ganjawala), and a deep dive into Salman’s mid-2000s era — plus a comparison to the original Malayalam version that Asim heroically watched for research. Ep 287: Kantara Chapter 1 & Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari — Jungle Violence, Dharma Logic & 2000s Rom-Com Vibes
In Episode 287, Asim, Amrita, and Sujoy dive into two very different cinematic worlds — the mythic mayhem of Kantara Chapter 1 and the glossy chaos of Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari. Sujoy kicks things off with his review of Kantara Chapter 1 — a prequel that expands the folklore of Rishab Shetty’s breakout hit. Expect talk of Mad Max set pieces, colonial undertones, and whether the film’s ambition pays off or just gets lost in the jungle fog. Then, the team dives deep into Dharma territory with Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari. What went wrong with this “Humptyverse” rom-com? From Jhanvi Kapoor’s dancing to Varun Dhawan’s “Salman energy,” influencer cameos, baffling product placements, and the mysterious economics of modern rom-coms — no one is safe. Also discussed: feminism that never makes it past the trailer, why nobody has chemistry with Jhanvi Kapoor, and how Bollywood somehow spent ₹180 crores on a movie set in one hotel. Show Notes: 🎥 Kantara Chapter 1 (dir. Rishab Shetty) – reviewed by Sujoy 💍 Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari (dir. Shashank Khaitan) – reviewed by all three hosts Themes: class & feminism in modern rom-coms, product placement overload, nostalgia for the 2000s 🪔 Next up: Patreon Listener’s Pick — Jaani Dushman: Ek Anokhi Kahani 💖 Join Our Patreon & Get Exclusive Perks! 💖 Love Bollywood? Ep 282: Mr India & The 80’s Dhamaka Wrap-Up
We’ve reached the end of our 80’s Dhamaka journey — and we’re closing it out with the ultimate classic: Mr India(1987). Talk about how the decade wasn’t as “bad” as Bollywood history suggests, especially for women actors and character performers like Saeed Jaffrey. Debate whether the 80’s really belonged to Amitabh… or if it was secretly Anil Kapoor’s decade. Review Mr India in depth: from Amrish Puri’s legendary Mogambo to Sridevi’s iconic Charlie Chaplin routine and Anil Kapoor’s unsung brilliance. Discuss why Mr India’s emotional core — hungry children, found family, loss, and resilience — still works almost 40 years later. Bonus Episode: Param Sundari Review | Janhvi & Sid Go Full Coconut
This is a bonus audio version of our Youtube Spoiler Review of Param Sundari Follow, like and subscribe to our Youtube Channel for more videos from the Khandaan crew You can also support us and interact with us by joining our PATREON community on: https:///www.patreon.com/khandaanpodcast This week, the Khandaan Podcast takes on Param Sundari, a film that promised a breezy rom-com but left audiences scratching their heads. Starring Janhvi Kapoor as the titular Sundari and Sidharth Malhotra as the clueless “investor” Param, the movie combines poor writing, botched cultural representation, and inexplicable creative choices — like coconut tree confessions and Tamil Nadu boats showing up in Kerala. Amrita unpacks why the portrayal of Malayalis is not just lazy but offensively bad, pointing out how none of the cast seemed to have received even basic language coaching. Asim reads out savage Letterboxd reviews and admits the movie makes nobody look good — Punjabis, Malayalis, or otherwise. Yet both hosts find surprising moments of charm: Janhvi’s sweetness in songs, her occasional Sridevi-esque mannerisms, and Sidharth’s hotness (if not much else). They also debate the bigger picture: Bollywood’s ongoing struggle with authenticity, the lack of genuine rom-coms, and why films like this end up being more “streaming filler” than theatrical event. Still, in a world of War 2 and endless action clones, Asim controversially admits he’d rather watch Param Sundari again than some of Bollywood’s recent blockbusters. Funny, sharp, and slightly irreverent, this is Khandaan at its best — spending more time thinking about a film than its creators ever did. #ParamSundari #JanhviKapoor #SidharthMalhotra #BollywoodPodcast #BollywoodReview #BollywoodFans #KhandaanPodcast #HindiCinema #IndianCinema #BollywoodHotTake #BollywoodDiscussion Follow us on our socials: / khandaanpodcast / khandaanpodcast / khandaanpodcast Visit our merch store at REDBUBBLE: https://www.redbubble.com/people/khan... Ep 279- War 2 and Coolie Reviews
This week on Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast, we’re tackling two of the most talked-about (and trolled) recent releases — War 2 and Coolie. It’s safe to say neither film blew us away, but that doesn’t mean we didn’t have plenty to say. From Hrithik Roshan’s sleepwalking Kabir to NTR Jr. stuck in the wrong movie, from Shruti Haasan’s mannequin-level characterisation to Aamir Khan’s husky-filled cameo, this episode covers it all. We dig into: Why Coolie proves pan-India blockbusters have cracked the “fanbase activation” formula Why War 2 fails as both mass masala and spy-universe film The baffling treatment of female characters in both films The accidental gay rom-com energy of Raghu & Kabbu Whether YRF’s spy universe has any future after this mess It’s ranty, it’s unfiltered, it’s classic Khandaan. In this episode, we talk about: Rewatching this classic on VHS and Z Cinema loops How Sridevi steamrolled two massy heroes without even blinking The Bollywood obsession with twin/double roles and what it says about acting in the 80s Sujoy’s VHS-core memories, Amrita’s cosplay confessions, and Asim’s righteous rage at some VERY male-gazey direction choices Whether Chaalbaaz holds up in 2025—and how it compares to other twin films like Judwaa, Kishen Kanhaiya, and Dushman This was a fun one with some deep dives into nostalgia, film tropes, and that uncomfortable undertone of male-written “masala feminism.” This is the penultimate episode in our 80s mini-series before we close out with Mr. India. Patreon bonus episodes whilst we were away: Live Reaction: Sitaare Zameen Par and Thug Life Trailer and Laal Pari Bonus Patreon: Too Sad to Be Funny, Too Funny to Be Cancelled This week on Khandaan: chaos, candour, and a touch of Shah Rukh. Khandaan continues the 80s Dhamaka series with one of Amitabh Bachchan’s most iconic—and polarizing—comedies: Namak Halaal (1982). Is this peak masala madness or a nostalgia trip gone wrong? In this episode, Asim passionately defends his childhood favorite while Amrita and Sujoy wrestle with the film’s dated humor, dizzying plot logic, and eyebrow-raising romance arcs. We discuss: The comedy Amitabh debate — genius or grating? The legacy of Kader Khan’s unforgettable one-liners Bappi Lahiri’s absolute banger of a soundtrack (Pag Ghungroo, Raat Baaki, Jawaani Jaaneman) Smita Patil's rain-soaked dance number and the discomfort behind the scenes The villain lair logistics (seriously, where do you even buy a villain lair?) Patreon bonus episodes whilst we were away: Live Reaction: Sitaare Zameen Par and Thug Life Trailer and Laal Pari Bonus Patreon: Too Sad to Be Funny, Too Funny to Be Cancelled This week on Khandaan: chaos, candour, and a touch of Shah Rukh. After a short break, the full Khandaan crew is back in the house—and we’re not easing in gently. In this episode, we dive headfirst into everything that’s been on our minds: the personal cost of conflict, censorship in media, and how Bollywood fits into a world that feels increasingly divided. From WhatsApp group tensions to government-issued podcast warnings (!), this is one of our most personal episodes yet. 🎙️ What we talk about: The India–Pakistan conflict and how it’s impacted real friendships Media propaganda, misinformation, and the risks of being "too political" Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par trailer—can it survive the noise? Suhana Khan in King—is this the launch her stardom needs or a risky bet? Bhool Chuk Maaf, Sanam Teri Kasam, Lal Pari, and why viral Bollywood music won’t die The surreal podcasting moment when we found out we’d been flagged by the Indian government Our stance on love, peace, and why we'll always choose each other—even when it’s not popular 🎧 Plus: We laugh through the weirdness of Housefull 5, dissect the awkward uncle energy of Akshay Kumar, and rant about Abhishek Bachchan’s rap career (again). If you’ve ever felt like you don’t belong in your own fandom anymore, or you’re struggling with how to talk about art during political chaos—this one's for you. 💖 Join Our Patreon & Get Exclusive Perks! 💖 Love Bollywood? Ep 269- Patreon Listener Pick- Sangam (1964)
bonusThis week Khandaan A Bollywood Podcast gives you a taster of the all the fun we have in our Patreon Community with a full episode available for the main feed. In this bonus episode of the Khandaan Podcast, it’s just Asim and Amrita catching up and having one of those classic, freewheeling chats you’ve come to expect from us. We cover a bunch of films, including a special listener’s pick – the iconic Sangam! Amrita saw Khalid Rehman's "Alappuzha Gymkhana" which makes us discuss about masculinity in today’s cinema – especially how it’s evolving in Malayalam films – and, of course, we reply to some of your comments and dive into comparing Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan, their career choices, and their very different approaches to stardom. Then we dive headfirst into Sangam: Raj Kapoor’s love triangle extravaganza, packed with sweeping romance, societal expectations, and some surprising gender dynamics. We chat about the film’s historical context, its cultural impact, and even some of the off-screen drama involving the actors that may have shaped what we saw on screen. And yes – we talk about that soundtrack too. 🎶 Come hang out with us! Ep 268- Tezaab- 80s Dhamaka Series
Welcome to Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast where this week we’re taking a new look at an old favorite as part of our 80s Dhamaaka series: 1988’s TEZAAB. Directed by N. Chandra, this Anil Kapoor - Madhuri Dixit starrer is mostly remembered today for its iconic number, Ek Do Teen. But this is also an excellent example of 80s masala — violent, political, angsty, furious, and just plain fun. Costarring Chunky Pandey, Mandakini, Anupam Kher, and more, Tezaab is a real trip down nostalgia lane for us at the podcast. A big Shoutout to our friend Dj Shai Guy for the 80's Dhamaka Theme song. Ep 267- Sikandar and L2 Empuraan Review
Welcome to Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast and we’re talking EMPURAAN and SIKANDAR with friend to the pod, Pappuchaaru. We took a break from our 80s Dhamaaka series to watch the Malayalam masala actioner, Empuraan. Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran and starring Mohanlal, Manju Warrier, and a whole host of other actors including R10 himself, this movie has run into political foul weather just days after its release. We discuss how it all unfolded, the movie itself, and what this means for Malayalam cinema. And then we have a lot to discuss with Sikandar. Directed by A. R. Murugadoss (Ghajini, 2008), this movie stars Salman Khan, Rashmika Mandanna, Sathyaraj, Sharman Joshi and others. Social media has already been ripping this movie apart. We discuss how low the bar has gotten and what lies ahead for Salman and the Hindi film industry. 💖 Join Our Patreon & Get Exclusive Perks! 💖 Love Bollywood? One of the most iconic cinematic moments of 1981, Umrao Jaan is widely considered to be Rekha’s most celebrated performance. Directed by Muzaffar Ali and with enduring music by Khayyam, Rekha plays the role of a famous courtesan who navigates love and family in the midst of the Sepoy Rebellion of 1857. Costarring Naseeruddin Shah, Farooq Shaikh, Raj Babbar, Shaukat Azmi, Dina Pathak and others, Umrao Jaan is an essential part of 80s Hindi cinema. Ep 264- Tridev - 80s Dhamaka Series
Welcome to Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast and the next movie in our 80s Dhamaka series is TRIDEV (1989). Directed and cowritten by Rajiv Rai, TRIDEV was a ginormous hit when it came out - enough for the Rais to repurpose it with Vishwatma a couple of years later. Starring Sunny Deol, Madhuri Dixit, Jackie Shroff, Sangeeta Bijlani, Naseeruddin Shah, Sonam, Amrish Puri and Anupam Kher among others, Tridev is still famous for its songs, composed by Kalyanji-Anandji although a case could be made that this was just an early Viju Shah soundtrack. This movie embodies the 80s vibe in a way that few others can pull off. The fashion, the songs, the villains, the homoerotic tension, there’s a lot to get through this week. Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast’s 80s Dhamaaka series features 1985’s MERI JUNG this week. Starring Anil Kapoor, Meenakshi Seshadri, Nutan and Amrish Puri in lead roles, this Subhash Ghai movie written by Javed Akhtar is about as nonsensical as masala cinema gets. It is also one of the great pleasures of our movie watching lives. With music by Laxmikant Pyarelal and Javed Jaffrey making his breakdancing debut, every kid from the 80s knows their Meri Jung. Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast’s 80s Dhamaaka series continues with 1986’s NAGINA. Arguably the most famous snake film made in the Hindi film industry, this Sridevi starrer shattered records with its blockbuster debut. Co-starring Rishi Kapoor and a mesmerising Amrish Puri, this movie had amazing music and iconic dance numbers that can never be replicated. Directed by Harmesh Malhotra and with music by Laxmikant Pyarelal, Nagina was shoo in on this list — but does it deserve the spot? Join us to find out.
