Black Excellence Is a Scam (ft. Elijah Rhea)

Black Excellence is a scam. Who is it for? Who does it serve? Elijah and I breakdown the idea of this concept and our own relationship to it. Taraji P. Henson, Deon Sanders, and Jay Z are all pillars of this, but still fight for their own space. So what does it mean when we get to the top and have another ceiling to break? Keepin' It a Bean is a podcast that brings together culture and conversation over coffee. These conversations could be pop culture, political, or personal stories. What's a better way to build community? Sit down, pour yourself a cup of coffee, and let Elijah and I help you build the life you deserve! Kanye, Kyrie, and OJ Simpson: Should Black Men Be Held Accountable in Public?

OJ Simpson, Kanye West, and Kyrie Irving have been on my mind lately. They are all Black men that are in the public eye, but they are dealing with a public lashing on social media or in traditional media. In this episode of "This American Negro," I discuss how we deal with holding Black men accountable in the public imagination. I am not sure if we have ever been able to truly do this right. _________________ Marquise Davon Richards is an educator, podcaster, and activist in Philadelphia. Will Smith Did Not Need To Apologize to Everyone

E

Will Smith had no business apologizing to everyone. He only was obligated to apologize to a couple of people. I believe in restorative justice and practices, but there is a human component to him as well. In this episode, I dive into why I think that Will Smith needs to be okay with this slap and how it humanized him as well. Marquise Davon is a podcaster, educator, and overall content creator. His mission is to bridge academia and the hood by any means necessary. His content spans from short form pop culture moments to long form dissections. He hopes that he can inspire a people to be more mindful of each other. Follow Me On Socials: @MarquiseDavon linktre.ee/marquisedavon

S1 Ep 3Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar Explore Restorative Justice

On this episode of "This American Negro," I explore how Queen Bey and King Kenny are trying to grapple with restorative justice in their music. We see that with Beyonce's "LEMONADE" and "BLACK IS KING," while Kendrick focuses mostly on the process of it on "Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers." This conversation has been interesting due to their place in Blackness and wanting to find humanity in our own community. Become a Patron Follow Me on Social Media: Instagram Twitter YouTube

S1 Ep 2Are Black Men Lonely? Big Teak is a Cautionary Tale

E

In this episode of "This American Negro," I explore Black men and our loneliness. I argue that masculinity places us into a box that feels like we're in isolation and that there is no one to turn to. I believe that we are being challenged in pop culture. It is causing a healthy conversation around what we need as Black men and I am excited to lead into this conversation. We have Lil Nas X, Rothaniel, Big Teak + Lil Murda, and Isaiah Rashad all pushing this conversation. This is a limited scope, but I did want to acknowledge that they occupy a space in popular culture that remains masculine that's more particular to hip hop. Become a Patron. S1 Ep 1Kevin Samuels Lied To Black Men

E

“This American Negro” is a social and culture podcast that aims to incite conversation and community building through an intentional dialogue. I am your host Marquise Davon. I am an educator, activist, and overall thinker. Kevin Samuels has an interesting relationship to Black men. I think it was one that felt more exploitative than genuinely helpful to our community. He sold an aspiration to Black men, but we don't realize what he was asking of us and we did not critically engage with what he was actually saying. ----- @MarquiseDavon on all social media. BLK ODYSSY: Creating Something Bigger Than Yourself

E

On this episode of "This American Negro," Quise sits down with music artist Juwan of BLK ODYSSY who just released their debut album "BLK VINTAGE." I was deeply inspired by this album and just had to reach out and talk with Juwan about the process behind creating every piece of this project. We talk about creating content that goes beyond the personal, what it means to put Blackness at the forefront, and the beauty in collaborating on such a socio-political album. Juwan is way beyond his years and I'm happy to have been able to talk with him. --------------------------------------------------- Interview with the Austin Chronicle Here: https://www.austinchronicle.com/music/2021-08-13/bigger-than-me-the-musical-journey-of-blk-odyssy/ Follow Them On Social Media: https://www.instagram.com/blkodyssy twitter.com/blkodyssy Listen to BLK VINTAGE: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/album/74TyLkiMZ67DXZLEdFoDok?si=kRLSo5NCSv2R8UrF9f5gzQ&dl_branch=1 Tidal: https://tidal.com/browse/album/183975398 ------------------------- Follow Everything I Do @MarquiseDavon on all social media platforms.
