Most people associate the role of a prophet with the idea of telling the future & prognosticating what is going to happen next.
But telling the future was not the major role of the Biblical prophets. In fact, their prophecies were more of a side effect. Their primary in the Bible was to serve as God's megaphones, declaring whatever God commanded them to say and speak with the people about the will of God in their specific situations.. This way God always had a people prepared to step into the next.
The prophetic word is a lamp that shines in a dark place and News Flash, we as a people are in a dark, dark place.
