Show Notes

The São José timber, a 33-pound piece from a slave ship, is leaving its exhibit at the National Museum of African American History and Culture after a five-year loan from South Africa. The timber, recovered from the ships wreck in 2015, helped tell the story of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Visitors have until March 22 to see it before it returns to South Africa in a custom crate. The exhibit will continue to feature other ship items and a cargo manifest to maintain its impact.
