Q39 Barbecue Now Open in Lawrence: Local Favorite Brings Championship Menu to Downtown
Local favorite Q39 Barbecue has finally arrived in Lawrence, opening its new spot this week at 639 New Hampshire Street. Owner Kelly Magee, a Jayhawk alumna with deep roots in the area, launched the restaurant to serve the same championship menu as its popular Kansas City and Overland Park locations.
Magee, who started her career in the service industry on Massachusetts Street, opened the original Q39 in Kansas City with her late husband. She always dreamed of bringing it home to Lawrence, and the new location features familiar staff to keep things consistent.
Locals are thrilled, especially those who used to drive to Kansas City for the burnt ends, brisket, and famous wings. The restaurant uses certified Angus beef from local farmers, smoking it fresh on rotating pits in a renovated old brick building. The new spot also features a big patio with bars for an open-air vibe.
Looking ahead, Q39 plans to open a new location in Lees Summit this summer and has big growth plans with a strong leadership team. Magee is committed to keeping quality high no matter how much they expand.
