Federal Investigation Targets Kansas City Nonprofit Leader: Allegations of Inappropriate Behavior and City Contracts

A federal investigation is scrutinizing Anton Washington, head of a nonprofit aiding the homeless in Kansas City. The probe, which began in 2021, has led to a grand jury subpoena for city records related to Washington and his group, Creative Innovative. Despite emails flagging inappropriate behavior by Washington toward clients, the city continued to award contracts worth approximately $287,000 through 2024. The FBI has obtained one of those emails as part of their investigation.

Washington denies any wrongdoing and has confirmed talking to FBI agents, but no charges have been filed. The investigation has raised questions about favoritism and improper deals in city contracts, particularly in relation to council member Ryana Parks-Shaw, a mayoral candidate, and her husband, the public works director who signed most of the contracts. Washington has donated small amounts to Parks-Shaws campaign and publicly supported her.

In August 2024, a client claimed grooming attempts by Washington, adding to the allegations against him. Kansas City leaders now face questions as the fallout from the investigation continues.
