Nearly thirty employees are to be laid off. Pineapple Street had been bought by Audacy in 2019 for $18mn. Audacy will continue making some shows. Audacy itself emerged from bankruptcy in January; it was reportedly looking for a buyer for the company in March.

Audacy shut Cadence13 (a $50mn purchase) in Mar 2024, and rebranded Podcorn ($22.5mn) as Audacy Creator Lab in April this year. The twenty podcasts that we selected for the 20 Years, 20 Podcasts We Love list are a representation of this same creativity and connection found across the millions of podcasts on Apple Podcasts. We look forward to continuing to help creators grow their audiences, and listeners find and enjoy the podcasts they love,” Ben Cave, global head of podcasts at Apple, told Podnews.

Apple says these shows “have made a lasting impact on listeners and the podcast industry”; separately, the Essential Listening Poll is compiling a list from audio creators, writers and scholars, which will be unveiled in August at Podcast Movement.

Steve Jobs demoed podcasting at the D3 conference in 2005, by playing the latest episode of Adam Curry’s Daily Source Code. On with Kara Swisher - Trump's Iran Strikes: Triumph, Stalemate or Setback?

President Trump’s decision to bomb Iran shocked much of the world — but America’s involvement was over almost as soon as it began, and so far, it hasn’t sparked a broader war, like so many feared.

So how did we get here? Was the bombing a success? Will the ceasefire between Israel and Iran hold? Is the regime in Iran any closer to collapsing — and if it did, would that be good? Finally, what’s the long term solution to the nuclear issue? Kara gathers a trio of experts to grapple with these questions, and more.

Jason Rezaian is the Director of Press Freedom Initiatives and a writer for The Washington Post’s Global Opinions. He mentions that Rob Greenlee is absent due to personal business but will return next week. Todd expresses his gratitude to both live listeners and those tuning in later.

Todd discusses ongoing developments within the podcasting space, particularly surrounding Podcasting 2.0, which aims to expand image specifications for podcasters. He explains the recent Apple announcement regarding new image specs for podcast art, emphasizing the need for diversification across apps and websites, as not all have the exact requirements. Todd points out that the traditional 1400×1400 pixel image format is insufficient for some platforms, suggesting that podcasters should provide specific image sizes for different apps to improve the user experience.

He provides an example of how developers and creators could include tags in their RSS feeds that specify the purpose and specific sizes for images, citing the example of a banner image that Overcast might require. Todd believes that offering a variety of image sizes will enhance the experience for listeners and facilitate better representation across different platforms.

Todd also notes the potential benefits of creating episode art using artificial intelligence (AI) and discusses how services like Blubrry are already employing this technology to assist podcasters in generating artwork. This Week in Bitcoin - 62: Bitcoin Is the Geiger Counter

Bitcoin doesn't lie about world events, and this week proved it. Plus, my thoughts on Bitcoin Core facing its own flavor of cancel culture and why Arthur Hayes predicts $9 trillion will be printed by 2028.

Scripting News podcast - Holding your nose, the aftermath (and it's not pretty imho)

This is a followup to the podcast of June 17 where I advised NYC voters to hold their noses and vote for Cuomo.

Well, they didn't. They voted their hearts, and I believe forgot the context.

What they're doing to LA is coming to every city in the US.

Who will stand up for NYC?

Not Mayor Adams, he's a Trump hostage.

And now, the voters of NYC have spoken.

Everyone's very happy because they forgot about ICE.

This is AOC's first big flub, imho, and the city will pay for it.

ICE is still out there, they changed the subject while NYC voted.

Think about who will speak for NYC.

Kathy Hochul, our governor, is the best of them. A strong forceful powerful leader. A lot of us will get behind her.

After that it's pretty freaking dismal.

I'm not even going to put their names in this tweet.

But I do name names in the podcast!

Oh life sure is interesting!

The Future of Podcasting - Could HLS Benefit Audio Too?

Picture this: a podcast world where HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) isn’t just for your Netflix binges but also for your ear candy. Yeah, we went there. While everyone’s been busy drooling over video streaming, we decided to throw audio into the mix. Because why should video have all the fun, right? We’re talking about HLS and how it’s not just a flashy gimmick for video content, but has some sweet benefits for audio too.

Think about it: seamless switching between quality levels based on your bandwidth, kind of like when you’re trying to watch a video and your Wi-Fi decides to take a nap. You start in glorious HD, and then BAM! It’s 240p because the Internet gods are not smiling upon you today. But with HLS, you could slide right into that audio version without missing a beat, or a word, or the rant about the latest podcasting trends.

We get into the techy stuff, like how HLS breaks media files into bite-sized chunks, making it easier to serve up different quality options. It’s like a buffet, but for your ears. Want low-quality audio because you’re on the go, or do you want to kick it up a notch when you’re back home? HLS has got your back.

And let’s be real, who doesn’t want that? Plus, we also touched on the whole “dynamic content” thing—imagine being able to swap out segments of your podcast without having to re-upload the entire thing. Say goodbye to those embarrassing moments where you realize your co-host’s mic was off for half the episode. With HLS, you could just fix that part and let the rest ride on.

By the end of the episode, we’re practically drooling over the possibilities HLS brings to audio. It might not be here yet, but we’re holding out hope that the podcasting world will eventually get with the times. Who knows? Maybe one day we’ll look back and laugh about the days of static audio files. But for now, we’re just here, dreaming of the future and trying to make sense of the tech that will get us there. So kick back, grab your earbuds, and let’s figure out how to make podcasting better, one HLS chunk at a time!

Takeaways:

HLS isn't just for video; it has potential benefits for audio podcasting too, which is like, who knew?

Imagine being able to switch between audio and video seamlessly thanks to HLS; the future of podcasting is wild!

The idea of dynamic content insertion could revolutionize how we listen to podcasts, but privacy concerns might rain on this parade.

HLS allows for replacing segments of a podcast without re-uploading the entire file, which is a total game-changer for podcasters.

With HLS, bandwidth issues can be tackled by switching audio quality on the fly, making it super user-friendly, especially for peeps outside the US.

The Podcast Standards Project is where the magic is happening for HLS discussions, so if you're into podcasting, keep an eye on that.

Support The Show

Daniel

Podgagement - Boost Your Audience Engagement

Social Subscribe and Follow Plugin

Dave

Buy Dave a Coffee

Join the School of Podcasting

Profit From Your Podcast Book

Your Hosts

Dave Jackson, host and educator at School of Podcasting™

Daniel J.
