First Contact in Space Sci-Fi
In this episode of Journey Through Sci-Fi, we continue our exploration of the space subgenre by looking at two films about humanity receiving signals from beyond Earth.
First we discuss Explorers (1985), Joe Dante's 80s sci-fi adventure about three kids who build a spacecraft after receiving mysterious messages in their dreams.
Then we explore Contact (1997), Robert Zemeckis' adaptation of Carl Sagan's novel about scientists who detect a radio signal from an alien civilisation.
Together these films explore one of science fiction's most exciting possibilities: the moment humanity makes contact with extraterrestrial intelligence.
Journey Through Sci-Fi explores the history of science-fiction cinema one subgenre at a time.
Follow the show for deep dives into sci-fi classics, cult favourites and the ideas that shaped the genre.
