When it comes to professional development, there are a lot of terms that get thrown around: mentoring, coaching, sponsoring, and quality assurance. It can be hard to keep them all straight. Here's a quick guide to the difference between mentoring and coaching. Mentoring is about passing on quality skills and knowledge from one person to another. The focus is on quality over quantity - it's more important that the mentee learns useful skills that will help them in their career than it is for the mentor to show off everything they know. In contrast, coaching is more about helping someone identify and reach their goals. The coach works with the coachee to help them develop the skills they need to achieve their objectives. There isn't necessarily an asymmetry of knowledge between coach and coachee - instead, the coach acts as a sounding board and sounding board, helping the coachee to develop their own solutions. So, what's the difference between mentoring and coaching? In short, mentoring is about quality and skills while coaching is about quantity and goals.
