Western Cape Expands Protected Areas: Over 81,000 Hectares Added to Nature Reserves
The Western Cape has significantly boosted its conservation efforts by adding more than twenty new nature reserves to its protected areas network. These declarations, made between April and March 2025, secure over 81,715 hectares of key land across the province, spanning prime spots like the Cederberg mountains, Agulhas Plain, Little Karoo, and Garden Route.
The Biodiversity Stewardship Programme by CapeNature enabled this expansion, allowing landowners to voluntarily dedicate their property for protection. The move aligns with the global goal to safeguard thirty percent of land and oceans by 2030, protecting the Cape Floristic Region, a global biodiversity hotspot under serious threat.
Some reserves, like Anysberg and Knersvlakte, are now run by CapeNature with expanded boundaries, while privately owned ones will set their own access rules based on conservation needs. Landowners interested in joining can email CapeNatures Stewardship Team to get started.
This partnership between owners, agencies, and government sets a strong path for lasting environmental health in the region.
