South Africas Auditor-General Tsakani Maluleke released a scathing report on the countrys audit outcomes for 2024-2025, revealing a deep-rooted governance crisis thats hindering service delivery and public trust. Out of 417 auditees, only 151 received clean audits, while the remaining 88% of the R2.21 trillion budget struggled with unreliable financial reports and legal non-compliance. The situation worsened for 45 auditees, including 22 major players managing R523 billion, with widespread procurement irregularities and material breaches. This governance failure resulted in R1.42 billion in wasteful spending, R44.23 billion in deficits, and significant delays in infrastructure projects and housing builds. Cybersecurity vulnerabilities further threaten national security and trust. Maluleke emphasized the need for a culture shift towards performance, transparency, and accountability to improve audit outcomes and service delivery.
